Apple 'Far Out' Event 2022

What do people think about the newly announced iPhones?

I’m thinking about upgrading my 12 pro to a 14 pro through salary sacrificing at work, and doing a shuffle of my current iPhone to family members with even older iPhones

Any thoughts?

By the end of the day, hey mate whats your phone? Latest Samsung fold…. MEH 😂

    • +1

      Oh no…anyway.

(You forgot the QCOMM also make the modem in the phone)

  • +2

Currently using an iPhone 11 pro.

Still going strong. No must have features to upgrade to the 14 pro imo

Kek salary sacrific an iphone. What an alternate universe some live in

Still rocking a samsung S8, 4yrs almost and going strong

Phone prices are out of control. I have a 500 dollar 2019 phone and it's fine.

  • +3

I’ll be getting the pro max.

I know the Dynamic Island has been getting flack as people think it’s gimmicky but the way i see it is it’s a very clever way to utilize space that’s considered a nuisance to something useable. Most manufacturers try to hide and reduce the size but Apple thought of a clever way to embrace and utilize it.

    • I'm not so sure about the ergonomics of the island though. Gonna be hard to reach. Hope they won't move things from the bottom to the island for no reason.

Got iPhone 13 pro for myself and iPhone 13 for my wife last year. Pro is so much heavier and these huge protruding cameras makes it extra ugly.

I'm regretting not getting regular iPhone for myself - it's so light, camera quality is really the same (I photo kids & cats mostly, tbh, if you do 4k videos of shaved models in the mediterranean caves lit by a artistically crafted candles, YMMV) and battery life is slightly better. And it was ~$400 cheaper.

Personally, this year I'd get iPhone 14 plus for a bigger screen and be happy as a clam.

    • Only thing pushing me towards the pro is the always on display. After having a Samsung, I can never go back to not having an AOD.

      • +1

What's so good about it? Eats battery, while displaying 3 meaningless notifications when no-one is looking at it?

I turned it off after a day when I had a Samsung phone.

        • The battery consumption is negligible. It gives me a quick view of what's happening without having to touch my phone. If you gave it a chance you'll find it's quite useful.

I still don't know why Apple went from the nice edges on the iphone 11 to the square brick edges on the 12 onwards.
I still love my 11 pro max

    • Square metal edges look and feel awesome. My first was iphone 4

  • Anyone know if iPhone 13 pro will be getting 4K cinematic mode? seems odd the iPhone 14 has same SOC and will be capable of 4K cinematic mode but the iPhone 13 Pro still limited to 1080p

    • 4K cinematic is for the 14 Pro, not the regular.

      • Check again, regular iPhone 14 also has 4k cinematic. It’s even on Apple’s website for the regular 14

        • Ah my bad. Should've checked the spec page first.

Probably the extra GPU core, then.

    • +1

iPhone 14 has a new 5 core GPU with the A15 Bionic so it's probably that. Or Apple not enabling that on the older model to get more people to spend $$ on the newer model if it's that important to them.

      • same as the iphone 13 pro. same SOC

        • Not identical:

          https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/7/23313663/iphone-14-plus-a1…

'it does have a bit more grunt than the A15 that was in the regular iPhone 13 and the $429 iPhone SE from earlier this year, thanks to an extra GPU core.'

          • @Dogsrule: you cut part of that quote. Same SOC as the 13 PRO which is more power than the regular 13:

“the same chip that’s in the iPhone 13 Pro — though it does have a bit more grunt than the A15 that was in the regular iPhone 13”

the 13s both had a15 but the pro models had an additional core which is what the regular 14s now run

It’s also advertised on Apple’s iPhone 14 product page as using the same chip as the iPhone 13 Pro

  • RIP mini. Still loving my 13 mini and will keep this for at least another 5 years I hope.

    • 13 Mini will still be for sale until at least September next year, it's still in production. I think they'll keep selling it till September 2024.

  • Thought I'll stick to my XR with this deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722991.
After watching the Queen passed, life is short and enjoy while I can so I decided to go with 14 Pro.

If anything, the death of a 96 year old should tell you that life can be very, very long.

Is anywhere discounting the previous generation Apple Watch Series 7 yet?

Keen to upgrade from my Series 2, but since the differences between the 7 and 8 are fairly inconsequential thought I could save a little. I know Apple has some on their refurbished store, but apparently since they're not "brand new" they don't qualify for the three months of free Apple Fitness+ (and as I write that, the refurbished 41mm GPS sold out…)

    • keen to know as well

  • +2

Who the hell named it a "dynamic island"?

  • I am using iphone 5 and I will wait for iphone 15

I think always on display is a bigger announcement usability wise than the pinhole notch.

Wish there was more innovation announced rather than just improvements and implementation of existing tech. Mostly because cheaper Android phones will follow apples innovation.

Have had always on display and a pinhole notch for the last 4 years with my last two ~$400ish Android phones.

It'd be nice if they announced a Samsung flip like foldable so that we could get some cheap Android like options competing in that space.

  • I'll be sticking with my iPhone 8 Plus.

    • +1

      Enjoy

      • Thanks. It’s been rock solid so far and hope it keeps on going.

  • Has Apple finally added Rich Communication Services (RCS) or are they still in the stone age?

    • +2

Don't think that's happening because iMessage is a big "lock-in" factor for Apple.

Tim Cook said in an interview: “I don’t see our users asking us to put a lot of energy into that at this point. I would love to convert you to an iPhone.”

That being said I still haven't activated RCS on my Samsung device since WhatsApp is just so ubiquitous in Australia, and the blue vs green bubble debate is much bigger in the USA than it is here.

      • What's funny is that they'd install all these apps that have a messaging function, but draw the line of using them to communicate with each other. I asked as to why and they "Want to have my messages in all one place". To the point where you don't talk to people?

  • Ordered a 14 pro for the wife.
Should be a decent upgrade from an 8 that's seen better days (2017~now, a decent upgrade cycle period), used CC points to buy vouchers and load up my apple account before purchase so wasn't as expensive of a purchase as it will be for others.

  • +2

    that notch

    • Don’t you mean “dynamic island” lol

      • +1

        nice try apple

watching full screen video's with that notch is….

the massive gap between the notch and bezels make it even worse

  • +1

I'm pretty excited over it. I was already very excited over the iphone 13 series and my partner got her upgrade. I've got a google pixel 6 pro, but they have lost me on how crap the phone is in terms of grip and handling. Also, the goddamn finger print sensor doesn't work half the time and it tells me, 'pin required for additional security'. It's a load of BS!!!

It happens so often, every single day that I feel like throwing the phone at a wall. All google are doing is trying to cover up for a failed fingerprint reader.

    • I've got a pixel 6 pro and haven't had any issues with the finger print reader at all. Guess I've gotten lucky because I have heard of the problem.

My biggest gripe is with the wireless charging stand, I had no idea it had a built in fan and its an annoying noise if charging your phone bedside at night. Very poor design IMO.

The marketing terms Apple uses make me gag.

looks like you're getting downvoted by the Apple cult. Here's an upvote.

      • I find it hilarious people make a point that "oh wait for the Android fan boys comments". Talk about being a bigot and also cringe defending a large conglomerate that doesn't give a damn about you.

The A15 and 60hz is pathetic in a 2022 release.

        • Is A15 a Samsung phone?
I think Samsung is almost as bad as apple these days. I wish LG didn't kill their mobile business. They were always great bang for buck

  • Yawn. I don't get the hype.

  • Sounds like a waste of money.

  • that watch ultra is really something at 49 mm and titanium case with sapphire glass $1299

  • +2

Apple basically just announced a phone and a watch for flexing because only the Pro and watch Ultra are 'new'. The rest of the line-up are basically the same thing, same chip, same look.

Gotta give it to their marketing department though, they really know how to sell.

I love apple products more than Android for reasons that have existed since the early days: reliability, consistency, great app integration, uniformed design, battery efficiency, performance never drops off (all Android phones I've had slow down after 8months or so) and fast camera app (all Android phones I've had have inconsistent performance with camera app). So the announcement isn't impressive, it doesn't change anything or is groundbreaking (but maybe it doesn't have to be). I've owned Android phones my whole life since the first Nexus, but exclusively been given iPhone for work. I can't see myself switching to Apple products because I enjoy having options, but Apple products are superior in nearly every aspect.

Living in a locked down OS but is superior in every aspect. Okay…
