Apple 'Far Out' Event 2022

What do people think about the newly announced iPhones?

I’m thinking about upgrading my 12 pro to a 14 pro through salary sacrificing at work, and doing a shuffle of my current iPhone to family members with even older iPhones

Any thoughts?

          One type of device

You could do a smart watch, phone, tablet and laptop if work signs off

You would pay first and get reimbursed

        • +1

how does paying no gst work?

          • @Manche: Employer pays the GST and then as it is treated as a work expense, the employer gets the GST tax credit for it.

        • +1

but your employer needs to pay FBT for you, no?

        • And I think it has to be solely for work, otherwise you have to declare the private use and pay tax on that.

      • +1

It gets even better than that.

Sell your 1/2 year old iPhone for a huge amount of cash and you come out equal or even ahead.

Nothing quite like a free flagship phone every couple of years.

        • +4

When eBay used to do 20% off Dell laptops, Dell would still issue receipts for the full price. I would buy the most expensive laptop I could get and submit that invoice for salary sacrifice. Then I'd sell it off brand new.

    • It's mostly for bigger companies and government institutions.
None of the small companies I have worked for have offered it.

If its not promoted internally and wasn't introduced to you when signing up then most likely its not available.
It's a employee benefit, so employers tend to promote the availability.

  • More interested in the airpods pro 2 than the phones.

They don't even offer the iphone pros in blue like the last few years.

    • 2 X noice cancellation and the most interesting part, reduction of excessive sharp noise but keeping everything else in during transparency mode.

    • 100%
I just took back my old earbuds and got a refund so was really hoping they’d announce them.

  • What do people think about the newly announced iPhones?

I don't like the number 13, so I'll be buying one just for the new model number… Don't really care about the features.

    • 14 might also be a disliked number.

In some languages, 14's homophone is "must die".

      • Might wait for the iPhone 88 then…

        • +2

Better keep holding onto your iPhone 7 for a long time buddy

    I don't like the number 13

    R u OK

I just hate how they keep segmenting their product lines even further.

With iPhones they now have 4 models - iPhone 14 (from $1399), iPhone 14 Plus (from $1579), iPhone 14 Pro (from $1749) and iPhone 14 Pro Max (from $1899). And they seem to have dropped the iPhone mini otherwise there would have been 5 models. No doubt they will continue selling old models as well.

Also it's funny how they've made the "notch" slimmer and just used the screen real estate beside it, and the whole tech verse seems to have lost their collective minds (best thing evaaaar!)

    • The iPhone mini is sticking around, it'll just be the 13 mini again. Maybe they will make an 15 mini or just upgrade the 13 minis internals and call it the mini SE or something.

      • Nope, they discontinued it.
The iPhone Mini was one of the best things they did and they've killed it.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are basically copy versions of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Max. There's no reason for them to exist.

The new notch is pretty boring. The Satellite Messaging won't get used, has a subscription, and is North America only. Price hikes everywhere, which is salt in the wound, when thinking about people and inflation. And the Apple A16 isn't much of an upgrade over the A15, which was known for a while now. Overall the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Max are not good upgrades.

If you have an iPhone 11 Max, it's not worth upgrading yet. That's still a competitive device against these new $1500-$3000 options. Anything lower and you might want to consider upgrading.

The AirPod Pro 2 doesn't interest me, and shouldn't interest people as well imho. The regular AirPod 2 is much more comfortable, and for quality you have to move upwards to over-ears headset like Sony XM4, XM5, Bose QC4.

What did interest me was the new Apple Watch Ultra. It's actually innovative. But the price, geez. Then again luxury watches do go for AUD $1000 and up, so it's a weird thing to weigh up.

        • Nope, they discontinued it.
The iPhone Mini was one of the best things they did and they've killed it.

13 Mini is sticking around, at least for now. (maybe because of unsold stock?).

        • Luxury watches go for $100k up. Just sayin’.

        • +1

          Nope, they discontinued it.
The iPhone Mini was one of the best things they did and they've killed it.

That's not true, the 12 Mini has been discontinued but the 13 Mini is still in production and on sale for at least the next year:

          https://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-iphone/iphone 13

I expect it to continue to be for sale until September 2024.

        • Suggesting over ears as an alternative to AirPods is silly imo, completely different markets. I can’t work out with over ears on, for instance. Or use them while gardening in the sun for hours on need (where the noise cancelling also comes in handy). And personally I find them extremely comfortable, but then I’ve always preferred buds that go right in your ear like the pro model does.

AirPods Pro 2 might not be compelling enough to upgrade for people who own the first version, but they’re still a compelling product for new customers who want in ear buds with noise cancellation. That’s a much larger market than the new watch.

I’ll be interesting to see if the watch actually catches on with the extreme sport market they’re pitching it at, or if it gets by on simply being “the most expensive Apple Watch” for people who want to use it as some kind of status symbol.

Noticed this too about the 'dynamic island' (LOL atrocious name) as well. Literally, they could have included that extra info at the top of the device screen around the iphone 13 notch. Matter of fact, it could literally just be a bulge in the status bar. Hugely surprised at how fan-boy everyone is over this feature….

    • +2

I'm confused - this pill-shaped thing is sitting lower on the screen, meaning that there's even less screen space? Meaning, for example, browser's menu bar will be even larger -> less page visible?

      https://monosnap.com/file/sjRac72oUBUEJzXIA47cdyvTU4TsOz

      • It is… although apparently they are using a slightly bigger screen with more resolution so potentially it could still have the same real estate as the previous generation.

Meanwhile, other manufacturers have already shrunk their cameras down to size of punch holes since 2018/2019…
        https://www.pocket-lint.com/phones/news/146822-hole-punch-ca…

        • +1

Are you deliberately ignoring the fact that its NOT just a camera?

  • +26

This year the iPhone Pro is a must-have. The revolutionary, transformative Dynamic Island has the raw, primal potential to put a gorgeous, serene, digital moat around your most personal and intimate experiences. Light can escape from a black hole, and it took Apple to invent the necessary intergalactic conduit with their new 4nm chip fryers, and patented seasoning. Of course it’s the magical, amazing, incredible, uncompromising, reality-distorting integration of hardware and software to create the market-leading just-right-for-firmness-ware you’ve come to expect from Apple. If that wasn’t enough to mesmerise you, in comes in a never-before-seen Deep Purple shade. Take my money!

    • +2

According to Apple the iPhone 13 is still faster than any Android, so there wasn't much need to put a revolutionary chip in the 14 except to make sure Apple stays ahead. Samsung stopped trying to compete on processing specs in their marketing a long time ago and I think that suits Apple fine.

      • +12

Even with 20 billion whatevers a second, I doubt it could keep up with the Kardashians

        • +4

          Mate, nobody can

      • That's great but we're at almost at a stagnation point with faster chips. I need my phone to take photos, phone calls and messages and last the whole day (and charge quickly).

        • +1

Yeah, I find the move to 144hz screens and chipsets optimised for gaming a bit strange on a phone. Like, sure, you can play games on a phone, and some of them are not bad, but it's still a less than optimum platform for them, and the issue isn't the refresh rate of the screen.

I’m thinking about upgrading my 12 pro to a 14 pro

Probably not considered a bargain. Unless there is 14 pro feature you can't do without.

I went from Android to iPhone 12 mini ($799 deal) because to get a decent mid range Android would be $400 and probably won't get 5 years of updates and Android can sometimes be buggy. Other half uses Apple and just easier to share the same connector in the car.

    • +2

Agree, but my partner and kid's phones are ageing, so the existing phones getting handed-down, so partner gets 12 pro, first child gets hers etc.

      • +1

But what if partner would like a new phone as well? How many kids can you shuffle phones down?

  • +1

Smaller notch/punch hole. So innovative and brave.

Joking aside. It'll be a solid device for most.

Edit: hmmm. Not a fan of the "2x optical-quality" line. I suspect this is just a crop

    • +1

Smaller notch/punch hole. So innovative and brave.

Got iphone 12 mini. The little bits on each edge at the top on either side of the cut out. If they lost those two notches nobody would give a rats. Put an extra selfie camera or sensor in there and shrink the space for selfie camera and speaker. It is more trouble than it is worth. That extra tiny bit of screen real estate was only useful when there is limited space.

      • Yeah, I'd rather they make it compact so fit everything along the top but make it a few mils thick on the top.

  • +2

No longer work at a telco and get discounts anymore so won't be updating my phone every year anymore.

Tossing up between Zenfone 9 for 2-3 years or iPhone 14 Pro for 4+ years?

Need to see if Apples claims of slightly better battery life are with AOD on and using the max 2000 nits of brightness outdoors. And whether they have sorted out overheating and throttling issues by claiming more efficient A16…

Zenfone 9 is almost $1000 less and looks promising in battery life + performance, stock Android with multitasking windows, splitscreen…not so sold on the camera and software updates but not sure if that's worth the extra 800 bucks.

    • Good point about the throttling. I can't make the most out of my 13 pro max for that reason.
Found this regarding battery life so here's hoping the battery tests will report similar (or better) results.

      • Exactly what are you trying to do which throttling wont allow you to?

        • +1

When I was playing genshin (120hz with high / max settings), it would be fine for a few minutes but then when the heat got too much and the throttling came into effect, the fps would drop like a rock. I even considered getting a 'phone cooler' just to solve this but those things were too bulky for my liking.

        • Yep what ChillBro said, the performance isn't as good as some of the newer Android phones now for Genshin as a benchmark - Apple has been like that even in the iPhone 12. Also it's not entirely free from glitches especially when it heats up (from when I had the 12), eg some apps require relaunching/ won't load or they crash randomly (ofc this happens on my S22 as well now so still Apple > Samsung in that regard)…not sure if it happens on Pixels and ZenUI though but from reviews seems like it's much more fluid.

    • We don't get much of a discount from Apple.

      • 25% off on telco bill before any promotional credits - Example iPhone 12 128gb promotion $100 credit and $50 pm credit for 80gb of data or more (don't remember) on a $115 plan over 12 months = ($1349 + 115* 12)0.75 - 50*12 - 100 = $1346

that's just from top of my head from what I recalled the plan I was on. Then you have Android phones, Pixels 50% off, also had the Fold 3, similar thing you sell the preorder bonuses was pretty good.

but otherwise outright you are correct, no one gets discounts

        • One company does a generous outright deal.

  • +3

Haven't watched the keynote but the Dynamic Island seems interesting and is a different way to do the whole pinhole camera/notch thing.

I'll stick with my iPhone 8 though. I don't really care about having a brand new phone anymore and new iPhones haven't been exciting for a long time. As long as I can check emails, send messages, check investments and take decent photos I'm more than satisfied. I've never liked Face ID much either, and prefer having a home button instead of using swipe gestures which I feel aren't very ergonomic. I'll happily use my iPhone 8 for another 2-3 years. Phones have peaked for me already, and the cool software features of new iPhones (like converting writing on a white board to text) are more nice-to-have than must-have features.

Oh, the SOS satellite calling is cool though. I'm guessing this is only limited to the iPhone 14 Pro Max Awesome Extreme Super Special Hyper Edition though.

    • I like being given more options on my android phone. I've got the choice between gestures and the three button layout. Also has face unlock and finger print unlock which is helpful if I've got a mask on.

      • +1

iPhone 12 and above can already unlock with FaceID while wearing masks.

        • +2

Also unlocks if you are wearing an apple watch.

        • Ahh cool. Didn't realise. My missus often has issues with hers, despite her apple watch.

      • lol… its still not a physical button which was the point above.

        • Neither is the one on the iphone 8

          • @Caped Baldy: Is the button rendered on the screen on the iPhone 8? Its a physical button with a physically simulated press action.

            • @dealsucker: My reading of ghost47's comment is their dislike of the gesture controls.

    • All the new iPhones have the satellite connectivity feature.

  • What's pricing like vs last year? have they jacked it up again?

  • +7

Seems the satellite feature is not available in Australia and even in the US it’s only free for two years. And that price, its so ridiculous.

    • I was actually about to applaud Apple about he ability to make use of Satellite technology in fringe areas, that they realised that the Antennas after iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 were not the best reception phones on the market - IE Telstra Blue Tick.

I have noticed that my Galaxy Fold 3 drops out occasionally in country areas (hence why it is not on the Blue Tick list).

My father has a Satellite phone, but I recall him saying the costs were ridiculous.

Hopefully, the more people that take on this feature(when available), helps bring the price down, and is supported by most manufacturers on flagship devices. It would have helped this family get located earlier.

    • I reckon they will make it a monthly subscription. If it's affordable, I might just pay for a particular month where I go travelling or something, then stop my subscription. However if it turns out to be some sort of locked contract, no one's going get it in Australia, especially when you can just purchase a personal locator beacon.

The phone trend seems to be heading towards full screen coverage.
But if you think about it if the screen covers the entire phone how are you going to tell if you are holding it the right way up?

The only solution I can think to this would be to put the earphone and microphone on both the top and bottom and the OS should be able to flip upside down if needed. But then it would get pretty annoying if you were holding it kind of flat and the phone didn't know which way to flip the screen and you could end up with a situation where the damn thing keeps flipping in the opposite direction you want it to.

I think full screen coverage is what most people want because it's aesthetic but I don't think they have fully thought it out or if it's even a good idea.

    • +1

By the placement of the charging port? Or the volume keys? Or the power/sleep button? That just physical features that give a way which way js which for the phone…

      • I was talking about viewing the phone from the screen side it's harder to see those features on the edge from the screen side. Isn't the first thing you look at the screen when you pull it out of your pocket?
You don't really watch yourself pull the phone out of your pocket and check if you can see the charging port on the side I mean I think most people don't. You pull it out of your pocket without looking then look down as the screen faces you and it's in your hand.

And apparently we are heading towards a "portless" future of phones as well. I also think they will eventually get rid of physical buttons and use touch sensor buttons instead. Then with no ports or buttons it will look very sleek and futuristic but even harder to tell which way is "up".

        • It’s got Face ID, it knows which direction your face is.

          • @cheng2008: That's a good point they could use that to rotate the OS instead of the motion sensor.

  • Anywhere to get discount giftcards at the moment? Hoping for 10% off Apple or similar

  • +4

I am going to get the 14 Pro Max. nice upgrade from my 8 plus.

  • iPhone 14 Pro will be the first Apple device I purchase in almost 10 years. Moving away from Android. What's the best way to get this discounted? Can I expect some discounts/deals later this year after the release hype has worn off?

    • +2

Same boat here, been using my Samsung since the s8 but the s21 and s22 haven't impressed me at all and they're way higher in price nowadays so why not get an iPhone and keep resale value later on?

From my research, if you're buying it outright then the cheapest way is to get discounted giftcards during a sale (jb hifi, harvey norman) and just buy it from there.

    • Port to Telstra and get $600 JBHIFI card

      • +1

The extra I'll pay for the Telstra plan will outweigh any savings unfortunately.

        • You'd get a better coverage as well

          • +1

@corvusman: The delta between Telstra coverage and the rest isn't as big of a factor had this been 10 years ago. Telstra's coverage is probably still better, but shouldn't be the main reason to port into Telstra considering their prices.

  • So how does one salary sacrifice and use discounted gift cards?

    • +1

Pay with gift card and just use the receipt to salary sacrifice. In the past I have successfully salary sacrificed and paid with gift cards.

      • Check with your employer first. Anything paid with a gift card doesn't count for my organisation. Not sure why, presumably because what you've purchased is the gift card, not the device.

      • Can you then go ahead and get GST refund at the airport?

        • Most salary sacrifice arrangements refund the GST as part of the package, resulting in a huge discount.

  • Been stacking gift cards from the woolies deal, but the 14 is pretty meh, disappointing even, especially with the chip from last gen.

I'll stay with my iphone 7 and save the gift card for the M2 Mac mini

    • +1

iPhone 7 will not get iOS 16, so it’s days away from the digital dustbin

      • Wow iphone 7 is pretty dated, the iphone 14 would be an amazing upgrade for you.

        • +1

I say you must go Pro. The Dynamic Island is to die for

      • +1

A phone doesn't become worthless the moment it doesn't get the latest OS revision

        • This is the brand of courage that Apple desperately needs to cultivate

    • We've pretty much exhausted the phone paradigm without redefining it at this point.

Like you've said, hopefully you're after a spec bump as you'll be surely disappointed if you want something as "awe" inspiring as the first iPhone.

      Closest thing are foldables.

  • -2

What type of display are they using? Yep, that's right, its an OLED made by Samsung display. Who made their new 48MP sensor? Yep, its Sony.
