Apple 'Far Out' Event 2022

What do people think about the newly announced iPhones?

I’m thinking about upgrading my 12 pro to a 14 pro through salary sacrificing at work, and doing a shuffle of my current iPhone to family members with even older iPhones

Any thoughts?

    I'm pretty stoked for it

    • +1

Anything particular about it? The pill thing at the top seems cool but it is just a gimmick?

      • I use Mac for work etc, the integration of messages is a big bonus for me. Can also use my iPad instead. Just convenience.
Not switching from IPhone to iPhone, so don't have big things to say rhere

      • +1

The Dynamic Island will become very useful, really.

        • +7

They said the same thing about Touch Bar on Macbooks. Useless gimmick.

          • @corvusman: Yep, My touch bar died on my macbook pro and Apple want almost as much as the cost of a replacement macbook to fix it! Gimme real buttons anyday!

          • +1

@corvusman: The dynamic island is much more useful and immediate, I don't think you can really compare the two.

            • +4

@whatgift: I wouldn't at all say it is useful. They could have just put in a tiny dot for the camera like Samsung or embed the camera under the screen like Xiaomi.

Then you don't even need a "dynamic island" and if you do, then add one anywhere on the entire screen using software.

In 2022, both models have an annoying notch that will interrupt the viewing of full-screen video.

              • @watwatwat: The faceID tech is way more accurate and advanced than other companies implementations, it’s not as simple as putting it under the screen at all. I would rather have faceID than the other biometric options from other manufacturers. My understanding is that the under screen camera implementations have serious compromises as well.

Sure, we don’t need the DI, but for my circumstances I’m probably going to be using it all the time. It’s also amusing how many people are saying it’s not useful without having actually used it.

Most phones have something that interferes with full screen video, so don’t see that as a differentiator at this point.

                • +1

                  @whatgift:

The faceID tech is way more accurate and advanced than other companies implementations

Well, maybe you are right. I haven't used it but it it works great in most daily scenarios (noting facemasks, dimly lit areas, places where your face is obscured) then that is good.

It’s also amusing how many people are saying it’s not useful without having actually used it.

You are simply referring to their implementation where they are trying to disguise their camera hardware?? You could put 30 dynamic islands over the entire screen if you want.

I'm saying the implementation of limiting yourself to disguising the hardware is not as good as having free rein to design whatever you want, and not be constrained to the hardware notch.

Most phones have something that interferes with full screen video

And iphone has the most annoying one out of them all. Despite the fact it is the newest phone and the most expensive.

I haven't actually used faceid so if it really is super awesome, accurate, adding large utility to your usage and good enough to compromise on the intrusion of the notch, then fair enough.

                  Afterthought:

I mean… for example, apple really, really talked up how siri would be the future. In reality that was a huge scam and no one ever really uses it and it's inaccurate.

And with faceid, they showcased that as a huge feature but then it was negated by people wearing facemasks. So i am skeptical about some of their choices.

Also the same thing with touchbar on mac. That thing was talked up as if it was the awesome future, whereas I always hated that thing and now they are phasing them out.

          • @corvusman: The Touchar is handy on Logic Pro, but I forget its there.

        • I think the DI is a great design and use of space, but at the end of the day it’s just a fancy presentation of the notification bar. It’s a stretch to call it “useful”.

        • Like on the Xiaomi?

    • +21

You'll probably say that next year too

      • Not really, I use android but with Mac integration etc I think it's time to switch :P

      • +14

        R U OK?

        • +3

I have mixed feelings about comments like this.
One one hand maybe it good that the slogan has gained popularity.
On the other hand I feel that if people just make a joke of it it's really undermining the effort to take mental health struggles seriously.

    • +2

I've got a 13 pro max but the 14 pro/pro max does look pretty good. They've finally got always on display and actually making 'use' of the camera hole. It's a shame they didn't make it any smaller/lighter though. And what happened to the EU requiring usb C connectivity? Guess they just forgot about that.

      • +5

        By 2024 for USB-C.

European Union lawmakers have reached an agreement on legislation that will force all future smartphones sold in the EU — including Apple’s iPhone — to be equipped with the universal USB-C port for wired charging by fall 2024. The rule will also apply to other electronic devices including tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld video game consoles, and e-readers. Laptops will have to comply with the rule at a later date.

USB-C will be mandatory for phones sold in the EU ‘by autumn 2024’

        • +4

Thanks for that, still a fair bit away.

          • @ChillBro: Rumor is the iphone 15 will be USB C, probably the one thing that's stopping me consider this 14 pro (and the lack of YouTube vanced 😞).

            • @Binchicken22: Hope so though I recall rumours of the 14 having it too lol. I use brave browser for ad-less YT and it’s worked fine so far.

              • @ChillBro: Using YouTube in a browser on a phone just seems yuck to me lol. I use YouTube a lot to listen while driving so the background play and sponsor block (which is different to just ad block) are great.

It's been known for quite a while now the 14 won't be USB C. I think they literally have to make the 15 USB C, either that or go completely port-less to be compliant with the euro laws. So it's pretty much locked in the 15 will be USB C.

                • +8

@Binchicken22: YouTube premium is only ~$1.30/month when paying with Argentine peso. Surely that's nothing when you already spent over $1700 for a phone?

                  • +1

@xers: There's the risk that your google account will get blocked by Google when they catch you. But i guess a good way to get around this is to make a new google account just to use with YouTube. But your recommendations and watch history will be fresh and won't transfer over.

                    • @nomadspartan: I've been doing this for the last few years first with an Indian subscription then moved over to Argentine one on my main Google account without any problems whatsoever.

                      • @xers: Yea i can't take the risk with my Google account, it's pretty much half my (digital) life.

                  • -1

@xers: YouTube vanced is much more than just "ad free" YouTube.

            • @Binchicken22: Altstore + uYou+

Yeah, making sure it re-auths it every 7 days is annoying, but ad-free YT is worth it

        • +2

Brazil looks like joining the EU stance

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: Brazil has it's own issues. Import taxes are huge especially on Apple products. It's cheaper to fly to US and buy there and bring back.

        • +2

Apple has now split the iPhone into two versions; North American, International.

The North American model gains Satellite Messaging, only has eSIM, as it loses the Nano SIM Tray. International model does not.

Next year's announcement will probably comply with the European Mandates. But they will do so by removing the USB port entirely, while the North American units will keep the Lightning Port.

This way EVERYONE loses, good job Apple!

          • @Kangal: Yeah I thought that was so stupid. What do Americans do when they travel and get a travel SIM if there aren’t competitively priced eSIMs I’m the country they’re going to 🤔

        • thank god common sense prevailed. apple will still find a way to make sure only their own proprietary cables work for iphones and sell it for 10x the price

      • -2

It’s currently charging with lightning cable, i dont see any sense by saying I’m waiting for USB C iphone, like you use iPhone by looking at the USB C, WTF ( who TF) cares how it charges. End of the day your phone is full charged for use be it Lightning USB C or magsafe.

  • Looks like all the cheapie companies will now be forced to have esim too

    • +4

I thought only the US had esim only for 14?

      • I haven’t watched the event yet. I guess you could be right

        • +3

Yes the e-sim only iPhone 14 is only for the USA market

  • +6

    USB-C yet?

  • +9

    For each YEAR {

What do people think about the newly announced iPhones?

    Any thoughts?

    } /s

I don't think about it, not until I'm "pushed" to get an upgrade. Similar to a car, drive it before it gets "major" problems.

    • -7

you probably don't need an iphone if that's the case

      • +23

a phone is a phone, unless you buy it as a trend follower… different use case.

        I had a 6s and went to a 12. That's how much I can wait :)

        • The true OzBargain way, hold onto your expensive purchases until they die and actually need replacing.

  • -8

This post will trigger the Android boys!! They are like vegans.

    • -4

Don't worry they'll get phones with dynamic islands in a few months

      • +19

        Why Downgrade?

      • -7

        Man, they love to JUSTIFY.

      • +19

But have had always-on display and car crash detection for years now

        • +16

          And widgets
          And in display fingerprint readers
          And 4k displays

          • -1

            @Drakesy: I want a palm reader

            • +5

              @tharlow: Yeah, well fair point.
Also almost forgot wireless charging was out on Android before Apple

              • -1

@Drakesy: You’re right! I’ve had one of those Android toothbrushes since way back

          • @Drakesy: In display fingerprint readers suck anyway. My wife has an S21+ and doesn't really use the reader (because it's so unreliable) so I set my fingerprint up in it instead. There is literally one fingerprint programmed into the phone and I can never get it to work, I always just enter the pattern to use her phone.

Meanwhile, the power button reader on my Poco, and the back of case readers on my old LG, and Xiaomi phones were pretty reliable.

            • @macrocephalic: I found setting up my thumb 2 times did the trick
Just need to register it as 2 fingers

              • @Drakesy: iPhone, just works!

                • @sackrace: Android: The thinking man's phone (also being in engineering, pretty much all my colleagues are on android).

            • +1

@macrocephalic: I find that the fingerprint sensor on the Note 10 + is trash as well, definitely not acceptable on a flagship device.

            • +1

@macrocephalic: So you have a sample size of one (s21) and want to say they suck?

Have a look at what the competition is doing with in display fingerprint technology before you write it off.

              https://youtu.be/3FfbXHeWcH0?t=680

        • -2

It not about the features, its how well they are implemented and I dont want to be in a crash to figure out that my phone/watch did not detect it. Here is a classic example - "my smart watch has sleep tracking for years"

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPqtfC70QTU

See how bad the so called latest samDung galaxy watch 5 pro does in this test. Sorry but you can have your features.

          • -1

@dealsucker: Android's have had crash detection for years lets not forget and it's worked multiple times.
Apple isn't it perfect either and won't detect all cases.
Or worse it's overly sensitive and sends emergency SoS's in non emergency situations, say it being in a bag that got thrown around or in a pocket.

      • +6

Punch out displays have been a kludge on Android for YEARS - just look in JB HiFi. Smaller and less annoying than the fat oval on the iphone, but still not as good as getting rid of the camera notch entirely (which I'm waiting for before I bother to 'up'grade).

I wonder how long before apple 'invents' the foldy phones?

BTW, I have an old LG V30 - and it has an always-on display. It was launched in 2017. Apple are going to have to have another 'catch up' phone sooner or later. It's getting silly again, how far adrift they are.

        • They got rid of those with the popup or are you waiting for the the under display ones to become mainstream and affordable?

If you're wanting that for the iPhone, then you'd be waiting for more than a decade as a) apple really commits to its designs and b) it'll be a near impossibility to include all the tech of the iPhones face id system in such a small footprint. They won't compromise on the security aspect for it either.

Maybe if they improve the filtering to the point where you can't tell where the full system is placed on the screen.

      • +1

        You mean a notification bar?

    • +1

How can you tell if someone is an Android fanboy? Don't worry, they'll let you know..

      • -1

AHAHAHA every single damn apple/ios post!!!

        • But! But the widgets!

      • I can't wait for the inevitable "iSheep" comments by some teenager triggered by the fact that I like a different phone to them.

    • +2

Worse than vegans. They are insufferable and they come uninvited on every post related to Apple.

    • Consoom iPhone. Get excited for next iPhone.

    • +2

Looks like they're living rent free in your head.

      • You talking about android boys? Apple living rent free in their head? We ALL know mate.

        • -1

What the hell are 'android boys'?

          Grow up ffs.

  • +7

Why upgrade? I really don't get it. I have an XS Max and it's perfectly capable.

What's the killer feature that is making you fork out over $1000…

    • +7

$1,749 for the 128gb pro model and $1,899 for 256gb… The amount phone manufacturers charge for storage is daylight robbery.

    • +6

partner and kids phones are ageing, so existing phones will be shuffled down

      • +1

Huh, actually not a bad excuse.

      • +1

Same here. All Apple products get handed down (well up actually) the family tree. Oldest products are a 2014 iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6.

    • +1

Because I like new things and can afford it. Why else?

      • +1

So why not get a new thing that doesn't have exactly the same functions as something you already have?

        • I like the apple ecosystem. I tried Samsung for a year prior to the iPhone 13. Apart from the GW3 style, I just didn’t like the Samsung/android world.

        • If you have a 13 maybe, but if you have the xs then there's no way the 14 functions exactly the same.

    • I went xs max to 13pm in 1tb. Combination of things, but main push for me was battery life over the xs. It’s amazing. I’ll probably have this until we start having implanted holographic phones lol

      • +1

True, I think what people are missing is that it’s about the combination of advancements that makes your experience better, rather than one killer feature that may very well turn out to be a gimmick eg folding.

        • 100% mate. I reckon the days of true breaking changes are gone. It’s kind of like the pc world now, high end now will serve you for 5 years easy.

  • +2

Curious to know how you go about salary sacrificing through your work for a phone….?

    • Speak to your Payroll Dept. They usually promote such services internally.

Otherwise, read this when you have a chance. Maybe they can help?

      • +1

        Smartsalary yuck

        Service is terrible

    • +1

Some companies offer it as a staff benefit and some don't. The changes to the rules a few years ago around the use of the devices made some companies pull the offer.

If you can do it, it's well worth it. It's like an automatic 30-47% (or whatever the brackets are these days) discount depending on your marginal tax rate.

      • +1

yep, and you pay no GST too
needs to be used for work and can only do one device a year
