In particular, Victoria gets a 4 day weekend (23rd September is also a public holiday).

    Bargain!

  • +3

great, well I'm working so I don't get a day off, but then I'm not mourning in the slightest so it works out.

    • +15

Public holiday rates it is then.

      • +4

        silver lining, I suppose.

      • Are you sure about that? I'll bet in a lot of EBAs, one-off public holidays are excluded.

        • Assuming that the day is legislated as a public holiday, or notified in a similarly legally compelling manner, it will be considered a public holiday. Public holidays are enshrined in the National Employment Standards, so would not be negated by an EBA.

      • +2

Or an extra paid day off from work!

  • +2

Is this one off or ongoing every year from now on?

    • +3

      one off

      • +2

Until the next royal dies …

        • Seeing as Charles is already 73 probably soon…

  • +10

'Tis a fine bit of news but sure 'tis no bargain, English.

  • Obviously Queen's birthday is gone, is the King's birthday gonna replace it and in what month?

    • +33

He was born in November so I'd say April.

    • +7

should be the same day just renamed kings birthday or kings day

the late queen's birthday was actually in april. her birthday wasn't always on a monday every year and different in each aussie state lol.

    • +1

Qld hasnt had Queens birthday holiday this year yet (oct), wonder if its still on

      • +1

Enjoy it, no King's birthday available in Queensland.

        • Not yet.

Wait up until is renamed as Kingsland. And Qld will then be Kid.

          Then yes.

      • +2

assume that has to fall on Queen Panan Choooooks birthday?

  • +3

    Finally something good from Place.

    • +19

Yep. With Charlie being 73, hopefully another day off soon :)

      • +1

Please, no one will be mourning 'ole Chucky boy

        • +4

Finally found a use for the royals…. and now you burst my bubble.

      • +1

        With Charlie being 73,

With those fat fingers of his, you could be onto something.

  • +3

    thanks i'll take 2

  • +1

Of course! It'll be the school holidays in Vic ☹️.

    • +1

I thought that is a good thing though? Many parents might have taken an annual leave day that week so it saves one extra day for them.

      • +1

        They might be a teacher.

        • +1

Teachers get stung for public holidays again. Happens every Christmas and Easter too 😅

  • +1

    HODL

  • I'm booked in for surgery in private day hospital that day, will this likely still go ahead?

    • +23

as your surgeon i say yes, but i might be hungover from the night before

      • Invest in a marking pen. Draw a L and R on the body you should be good to go.
        Dr.Phill
PS : up and down arrows don't hurt when on tequila sunrise breakfast.

        • +1

My left or your left, I always forget

  • +2

haha. thank god king charles is also old enough.

  • +3

    What's the RRP on this?

    • +1

The same as your pay for a day

    • And cashback?

  • -2

    not a bargain

  • +2

The UK loves the monarchy (generally) and they get offered an unpaid bank holiday for her funeral and no queen's/kings birthday at all

We talk about getting rid of the monarchy and we get a paid day off each year for their birthday and another paid day off for their death.

I vote for keeping the monarchy with those paid days off.

  • +2

Is this paid day off for contractors ? Asking for a friend

    • +6

Not if you're a filthy casual.

    • +1

No. Not a paid day off for contractors. I have been contracting at the same organisation for 6+ years with 12 month extensions and have resigned myself to only getting paid when I actually work. No sick, no annual, no LSL, no public holidays and definitely no Queen’s passing paid leave.

      • +13

Yes. That is what being a contractor means.

      • +7

Wow, it's almost like contractors get a higher pay rate for a reason.

        • Works out to be the same in the long run.
Contracting=> High expectations, great rates but no Annual Leave, S/L , job security ( unless in certain govt departments), growth is limited, no free trainings, no paid iPhones, no paid conferences, etc
Permanent: 60% - 70% the money for same work, but paid leaves, S/L, maternity leave ( subject to policy), job security, growth opportunity, free conferences, paid training courses, iPhone.

A contractor on $1200 per day was probably on $1000 per day five years ago, but permanents have had a promotion or two and progressed from 130k to 175k.

          Note: not my case.

  • Do I get paid still if I am a permanent full time employee and have a day off on that date?

    • Yes, of course. You will get paid and have a day off.

    • +1

Do you normally get paid on public holidays?

      • Yes even when I have a day off I get paid a day's worth of work

        • +2

I think you have the answer

    • no.

    • Yes, just like when you take leave over Christmas and are paid for the public holidays without needing to take annual leave

  • +1

Full-time worker, did my roster do give myself that day off because I had things to do. Now everything will be closed. Nice.

    • +1

If only the world was all about you.

      • I know right?

  • +12

So then why do pollies need 2 weeks off to mourn if they think the general public only need a single day? personally I don't even need the day but really peeves me off that those lazy twats use any excuse for working even less.

    • +4

It's a mark of respect whether you agree or not. If you bothered to read the article, Albanese said they'll make up the sitting days lost.

      • +3

So we needed to shutdown longer than the UK parliament as a mark of respect? It is pathetic and unnecessary.

        • +4

Parliament has two-week sitting cycles. It's never always sitting. In this case they're losing 4 days.

          • +3

@Techie4066: if 1 day was good enough for the general public then 1 day was more than enough for parliament too. beyond that it isn't showing respect, it is being lazy.

            • +2

              @gromit:

              it is being lazy

How, when they'll work the same number of days this year regardless? I think your comprehension is lacking.

              • @Techie4066: ahhhh yes because a pollie is only at work when they are sitting, other meetings, public engagements etc don't occur outside of that.

                • @gromit:

Mr Albanese said the government would also make up the four sitting days that were lost when parliament was suspended following the Queen's death.

"It would be difficult to envisage the sort of adversarial activity that occurs in our parliament … so I think it was appropriate, and protocols require the automatic cancellation," he said.

        • +3

It's 4 days mate. You sound like a liberal supporter. They are going to make the days up.

At least they are actually going to sit more days than the coalition.

They did SFA for 5 years. 100 days of Labor and kicking all the goals.

  • Cool but not really a bargain for me as I work on comms however good to pay respect RIP QE2

    • +1

Governing by tv ratings. What could go wrong?

    • +3

Now he looks like a fool that he thinks most Australians think the death of the British monarch justifies a national public holiday.

Wait, do you suppose the party that knighted Prince Philip would have not have made this a public holiday as well?

Overwhelmingly Australians don't give a stuff about the Queen.

Bring on the next republic referendum!

    • Sure, we're Australians, so we're not going to turn down a day off.

So you’re calling Albanese a fool for announcing a day off, yet you’re gonna happily take it? Do you not realise how weird that sort of behaviour is?

I reckon you should write to him telling him he’s a fool and go to work. People who aren’t grateful for this kind of thing really don’t deserve it.

    • Hospitality is absolutely screaming for workers, get a job if you would rather the money. You will be able to get paid for all the other public holidays too, in future.
I can’t believe you’ve never thought of this if a day off is of such a concern.

      • Funny how no one seems to scream about having a public holiday on things like Grand Final day.

    • +1

      typical Labor mentality

      Lol

    • if you don't work, you wont get paid. seems extremely normal to me.

  • +2

I bet the government wouldn't make it a day off if they got 20% of their pay docked for that week.
    Typical government mentality.
    Crazy stuff

    • +3

You’re only down 20%? Are you taking two days unpaid in a normal week? Crazy. Imagine spending time not earning money when you could be. Typical lazy work shy mentality.

      • +3

        1/5 = 20%

        • +1

In Victoria we have Friday off (AFL day) as well so maybe that is where the 2 days comes from.

  • Good Greif!

  • Should we all go out and panic buy toilet paper or tissues?

  • +8

Don't know why everything is so politically divisive these days. Almost like everyone just finds a reason to complain. Go enjoy your extra day off and have a beer.

    • Might be something to do with Murdoch media profiting off sowing hate and creating divisions in society?

  • -5

Just put up prices a little more to pay for the lost day……
    =inflation/higher prices…..
    Get it??????

You do realise that someone has to pay for this stuff….
Just don't complain about how much things cost.

    • Wow, so rather than working to restore the lost income, you'll just put up prices? Incredible that you expect extra money for nothing when you could go earn penalty rates at another job.
Just don't complain when others are having a day off. Oh, too late.

  • You can also request a free portrait of the queen from your local MP.

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/sep/11/colle…

    • Wonder if they are going to start offering portraits of charles now

  • +2

Time to take M T and W off as well to make it a perfect week in Vic 😂

  • +2

    Woooohoooo

    Free day off!!!

    Long live the Monarchy!!!

    God save the King!

    Well done Albo!!!

  • we get paid for this day right?

  • +1

Rather than a full public holiday, I would prefer a remembrance something similar to that practiced on 11 November. Perhaps business and retail could shut down for an hour or so mid morning, whilst we all remember the late Queen. Perhaps some short memorial services or alternative short events. We then all go back to work for the rest of the day

    • +2

      How is that a bargain????

  • +2

There is something about Wurundjeri country. It’s just blessed. Enjoy your four day weekend!

    • Every day's a Sunday When you're catching Barramundi

  • Nice thanks for the paid holiday, only good thing to come out of the monarchy.
