  • This or Synology DS920+ ?
I read thag Qnap is better specs wise and Synology is better for Software/User Interface. Anyone who has experienced both can highlight ?

    • -1

I have used QNAP for last 10 years and Synology for 2+ years. I'd choose Qnap over Synology.

      • Why?

        • WAY better hardware for similar price mainly.

If you mostly care about specs go qnap. Mostly software go Synology.

          • @B3: That's exactly why. Though people say Synology has better UI, the learning curve for QTS isn't very high. You can quickly get the hang of it.

      • The difference in Software is huge or just a little ? Whats the difference mainly ?

        • +2

Check out the youtube link for a discussion. Differnce is mainly complexity & user friendliness in getting it to do & set up stuff.

People with IT background / experience might prefer QNAP. General public might prefer Synology.

I have this NAS and LOVE the more powerful yet efficient CPU, the 2.5 Gbe ethernet, the HDMI output. This model has 2 SSD slots you can use for whatever you want.

Synology is easier to set up and 'just works'. QNAP is not that for most people, you have to put in a reasonable amount of time to figure things out if it is new to you.

Some people can get very passionate about this debate but in my opinion it comes down to valuing time needed in running it vs performance.

    • Qnap usually offers better bang for buck. Though QNap devices have suffered from several highly serious security vulnerabilities as of late (There are almost too many to mention). Many have had their devices remotely encrypted and have had their data held ransom. Of course no brand is perfect, but QNap seems to have more than their fair share.

However, a lot of these vulnerabilities can be averted by turning off remote access features and not exposing it to the internet. So if you need these features I would look elsewhere, or at least do your research.

    • Synology because of SHR vs RAID

  • Can it do 4K H.265 HW transcoding?

  • +1

This is actually a great price for the hardware you get. If you're really concerned about Qnap vulnerabilities, just install another OS like unraid or truenas scale.
