Why didn't you fix it? Bloody hell, easy to fix and you just threw it out? What a waste! This throw away society is really wasteful.

      • +1

        Throw away society?

    • +8

Easy to fix if your handy or by a shop

    • +12

I’ve had one for almost 10y. Bottom of the line Bunnings model with a B&S . Have never done any kind of maintenance and it still runs flawlessly.

      • +3

My Victa with a B+S hit 25 years this year. Still starts first time.

        • I have a 25 year old B&S Rover that is still going strong…replaced the spark plug (every 4/5 years), pull cord(once) air filter (once), fuel gasket (once) but that's about it…I'm not mechanically minded but youtube shows you how to do everything.

        • I have a Victa Bronco that is still running after 33 years! It is a Victo engine, not quite as good as B+S.

      • Mother in law has the same - the deck is getting a bit rusty and the throttle broke. My bad on that one but it is plastic and probably not as sturdy as it could be. Should give the motor a bit of TLC but I don't.

      • They definetly don't make em like they did 10 year ago … B & S* pretty sure the company changed hands and is low quality mass production now

    • +3

      This post makes no sense.
      You didn't throw it away.

    • +1

Had my Victa now for 15 years, still chugging along.

      • +3

Same here, mines 20 years now. Wheels are wobbly and throttle cable broke 10 years ago so just use throttle on motor. Engine is perfectly fine with heaps of POWER. Fixed the pull start cable coupe of times over the years. I'll use it until the wheels fall off, lol.

    • +3

Bought a Victa on Facebook market place for $40, 3 years later, still going

    • This is a mower that lasts 20 years……

yes you have to fix things that break, but you have to do that on any mower.

    • quality of current victas are dogshit….

    • Isn't it 5 year warranty?

  • Is this a 4 stroke lawn mower

    • Yes

    • +11

I had an ex-girlfriend who used to call me “4 stroke” 🤷‍♂️

      • +1

Mine prefers a 2 stroke with oil

      • +6

Mine prefers electric self-drive these days. I’m no longer needed

      • +1

        50 shades of green

  • +1

Buy from a specialist mower shop

    • +1

      Why?

      • +9

Victa make a range for bunnings that are far inferior to the range available at a decent mower shop.

        • +1

          Any more expensive

        • +1

          But the bargains

        • +3

I bought an el cheapo Sanli / Kmart one as was not sure how long before I move. 12 years later it still runs ok, I have maintained it but no major dramas. I don't have much grass. So would depend on how much use and you circumstance on how much to spend. Parents have a Honda and is just starting to indicate a overhall is needed after 30 years.

        • And as for pricing ? Night and day difference I'm sure !

    • yes, I did that years ago. Bought my husband's one from a GYC centre. Victa 2 stroke Mustang. Pretty sure we have had it for 7 years and was $750. Serviced a few times over the years when there were a couple of niggly issues, but it runs fine now. Much better than the cheap Bunnings models. Will last for a lot more years too.

      • -2

2 stroke is so much better, hold onto it.

        • yes, my husband has only ever had 2 strokes over the last 36 years…I specifically got him the 2 stroke the last one as well. I knew that is the only type he likes. Not sure if they make them anymore (Victa) The mower before was a Victa 2 stroke as well (pretty sure that one WAS from Bunnings, as that was all we could afford at the time), but it was falling apart by the end, including the wheels falling off all the time lol, so I thought he deserved a newer, better model. The new one is nearly 8 years old, and I am sure we will get at least another 8 out of it, as it is looked after.

    • +1

Get on the blower to your local mower shower

  • I was going to buy the victa but bought Hyundai 17" Petrol Mower HYM42P-B instead. The hyundai is good does a good job been a little over a year now, np. Some dude has a decent review on product review as well as ebay review.

    • +3

I would buy the Victa for ease of warranty, good enough brand and parts support as it runs the Briggs and Stratton engine.

  • +8

This is a good entry level one if you are after a mower.

Wash or blow off the deck after mowing as Victa's are prone to rust in the long term if the grass is mowed while wet or damp.
The engines are pretty reliable, however the plastic Briggs carbs do have a issue where if fuel is left in it for long periods, or stale fuel is used and left it can gum up the carb jets causing starting or running issues.

Three things to keep this mower running long term are

    • clean the underside of the deck after use
    • dont use ethanol fuel
    • if storing for long periods over winter, run the tank and carb empty
    • Thanks for the great tips!

  • +7

The regular price of this mower was $399 until they increased the price to $449 in February and then they increased it again to $479 in july.

  • Great mower. Mine is still going after 10 years. Bunnings sell service kits for these, which I recommend doing at least every 1.5 years.

Only had to replace blades once also.

    • Damn only got 9 years.
Sharpened the blade with a file. Replace? Pffft!

      • +1

I just do a pass with the angel grinder.

        • +3

is the angel grinder where you run the mower upside down with a file rubbing on the moving blades?

        • +1

I've only got an angle grinder. Damn.

      • +3

        Sharpen the blades?
Easy, just run it over a concrete kerb for a few seconds

  • +1

My Victa mower bought 12 years ago is still going. From memory the price hasn't changed,

    • I checked the receipt on my 2011 Bunnings 18" Victa it was $369 also.

      • -1

Accounting for inflation, that's like $3 in today's terms.

        • +1

Wouldn't it be the other way?

        • +3

          Found the financial advisor

    • Checked the anniversary model at Bunnings last week - made in China.

Not sure if all of them are but there's a reason why the price hasn't changed over 12 years.

And it's not because they've focussed on quality.

      • Victa has never made 4 stroke mowers in Australia

  • +3

Pay a bit more and get a quality electric

    • Yeah and in 5 years time when the batteries are clapped out enjoy tossing up whether it's worth paying 80% of the price of a new kit for new batteries or just buy a new kit and send the old plastic one to land fill…

      • +2

It doesn't look like you've done any research to see that batteries are not very expensive, where required, which is longer than 5 years

        • -1

I'm speaking from experience with a Ryobi 36v whipper snipper.

Admittedly it's still "usable" at this point for what I need, but the battery will not charge past 75% no matter how long it's left on the charger and you can feel a noticeable power drop compared to how it used to be. Don't know how much longer it will remain "usable".

I'm in the exact situation of being like, hmm do I buy a new 2.0ah battery (a downgrade from the 2.6ah mine has now, but will probably do the job) for $179 or just a whole new "kit" for $349.

For reference my b&s lawn mower was at least 10 years old when I got it about 10 years ago and it still starts 2nd pull every time and the only maintenance I've had to do it is clean the carby out once.

          • +3

@Binchicken22: My neighbour has a ryobi electric mower ..its total garbage, I hate using it… even for the small patch they have.

Totally gutless for mowing sir walter with a few weeks of length on it in summer

            • @MrThing: A few weeks of summer buffalo growth is tough on most mowers mate. It's also really rough on the plant.

Ideally you need to mow every week over summer. (I'm in Queensland)

      • +4

Maybe, but the experience mowing electric is far superior.

      • +1

Sure the cheap electric mowers don’t match petrol, but why the hate?

There are legitimate advantages to electric vs petrol.

    • Agreed, had nothing but trouble with petrol mowers and now have a Ryboi Electric mower and it's been flawless for the past 4 years. It just starts everytime without having to constantly yanking the starter.
Starts at a push of a button and never once have I needed it serviced.

      • +2

This Victor is still 1 pull. Even after 10 years

  • +4

I bought my 18" Victa Briggs & Stratton from Bunnings back in 2011 and it has been excellent.
Occasionally on a cold Melbourne morning it would not want to startup but if it was sunny I would leave it out in the sunshine for an hour then no worries.
The plastic handle on the pull start broke so I replaced it with a 200mm section of an old broom handle, that's been the only issue.
This 18" beast is fantastic for chopping up weeds, old tomato or sweetcorn plants for mulch, I throw them all onto the concrete path and let this little monster mow it down,
then I throw it all into my compost bins, it's amazing how quickly it turns into soil with some help from the worm warriors.

    • +2

My 30 year old B&S motor doesn't like the cold either - sit it in the sun for 30 minutes and it starts first go. Bought an EGO battery mower last week which is great but doubt it will last 30+ years.

      • Out of curiousity how are you finding the Ego cutting long and wet grass compared to the Petrol mower?

  • +6

Trash quality and not enough grunt. These new victas arnt anything like their vintage parents

Just buy a honda, cry once

    • More then double price. Metre 10 have Honda engine yard force

      • Each to their own - but ive always hated spending money and being dissapointed because i cheaped out.

End of the day if you have a fast growing or thick lawn you want a nice powerful mower engine that powers through, not a childs toy with an engine suitable for mowing grass as long or thick as a putting green

    • +1

This - HRU196 with the GXV160 engine will probably run until the world runs out of fuel.

      • +2

I use the HRU196. check out my quality of lawns I am a gardener though… https://ibb.co/fH0FXzL

Honda do make the best engines but the 196cc Briggsy would be second choice. there are actually springs on the HRU196 you can adjust to make them run harder for commercial use.

      • Do you think a hru196 buffallo classic with the hose air filter attachement that is well maintained for 700 worth it? i need something to cut my 750m2 land and people do recommend those ego mowers?

    • I got a Troy Bilt with Honda engine from Masters 9 years ago. The only times when I could start the engine were the times the tank was empty lol!

    • Seems an unpopular opinion here, but I agree.
I got given one for free and it's absolutely terrible.

Starts and runs fine and all that, nothing mechanical wrong with it. It's just a terrible mower. Suction is poor, it doesn't pick up grass well and likes to blow it out the sides of the deck making you do a heap of passes to pick up 80% of the grass clippings. Doesn't handle longer grass well at all.

Definitely recommend spending a bit more and get even the cheapest Honda.

  • +1

Electric is better if you have a smallish yard

Being able to pick up the mower for corners is a game changer

    • +1

I'm on a 750 sq metre block and electric still the way to go. Got a decent batter that allows me to do front and back on one charge. Do recommend having a second battery though.

      • Hey Gandalf,

Which model do you have? Looking to get an electric one for my yard.

        Cheers

      • Electric mowers are "good enough" and a fun toy, but they've always let me down with the final finish. I've found my Honda has always given me a better cut overall.

        • Should try one of the new electrics

          • @Tleyx: I have tried them, I wasn't impressed overall.

            • -1

@Aliensf: The honda you quoted does a poor job compared to any of the electrics in my opinion. And takes longer

              • @Tleyx: I never said what lawnmower I use, but the Honda I use is a HRU216 Buffalo Pro.

  • +1

Masport decent warranty on it. Bunnings sells a model too. Best to go to a lawnmower shop for your lawn needs or general maintenance petrol tools.

  • Nice one OP saw this and got one, thanks

  • Price matching ALDI mower currently on sale

  • The old Victa 2 stroke mowers are more durable than the current Victa 4 stroke mowers.

My wife gave me a new Victa 4 stroke mower. I used to tip it up to hose underneath, just like how I cleaned my old Victa 2 stroke mower.

Big mistake!. The oil from the sump leaked into the cylinder and valves. It had to be taken apart and cleaned.

Now, I keep the mower horizontal at all times.

    • +1

Yes- i made this mistake too. Luckily in my case it just caused a smokey exhaust for a couple of minutes.

    • -2

vicat has gone to crap…..but most ozbargainers are in denial

    • Which way did you tip it?

I hose off my Victa but tip it from the bottom so the front is in the air and had no problems.

      • Tipping it from the front or with the air filter side up is ok.
When it's tipped with the air filter side down, the oil will leak in to the airfilter clogging it and causing a smoke show when started.
