Toshiba Satellite Z830 i7 for $1299

80

I bought this online on Tuesday night, it was delivered by lunch time Thursday.

Ultrabook cost 1299 + the CC surcharge & delivery all up cost 1335, delivered.

They also have the special $10 off delivery cost which helped.

I think this is a very good deal.

Good - Ridiculously thin, HDMI + USB 3, great battery

Bad - Crap screen (1366 -768, TN), last gen CPU

    Alright deal I guess

  • Hard Drive - 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD)
Optical Drive - No Optical Drive

If it doesn't have a ODD, then I don't think you can add a second HDD/SSD.

  • Just my opinion but letting anyone else know in case they are considering this.

I got the i5 Z830 Satellite and I wish I had known these things before I bought it:
    - Fan noise every few minutes. NOT air noise. Irritating as hell. Don't think you might get lucky because everyone gets it. I find it more annoying than a desktop because of it's high pitch and random occurrences.
    - The model here is the Portege version so it has a matte screen(what I prefer). Mine was the Satellite which has a headache inducing glossy screen.
    - Being an ultrabook, the keyboard really takes some getting used to. E.g. the spacebar only registers sometimes because 30% of the spacebar on the left side doesn't register.
    - While it is probably the lightest 13" laptop out there, the power cable is still a normal 2-piece one unlike the power cable for the Zenbook.

    • This parrt number appears to be the Satellite, so I presume it will have the glossy display too (and 1 year wty rather than 3 years).

  • For that sort of price I'd wait for the new zenbook! 1080p ips goodness…

What is the deal here anyway? Do they sell for more?

  • This is still the lowest price I've seen, so I'm tossing up whether it's worth going i7 for $1299 vs the i5 for $999.

In practical terms, what is the real difference, when just using for web browsing etc?
I am a happy R500 user, so I'm not sure if it's worth going to this or waiting for the new Ivy Bridge version, later.

    • There would be absolutely zero difference when doing any sort of work that is not processor intensive…
Examples of processor intensive tasks are advanced video/image/audio editing.

edit: new ivy bridge should improve not only performance but also battery life which you may appreciate. My advice is to wait for ivy.

  • It was one of the cheapest price around, for the same model other stores sell it for well over $1400.

Anyhow I've just come back to their site and see that they're out of stock but you can order it in.

  • Thanks, I checked that too. Not sure if it's worth the 40% extra to me to go from the i5 model to the i7.
i5 is $999 some places and is $1049 at Dick Smith this weekend (maybe less at Closing Down outlets - has anyone asked?).

As noted by others on some threads on these sales, there may well be some further reductions / sales which I might wait for, around 28 June. Let's see what happens.

Centrecom has the $1299 i7 too:

Shopping Express has the $999 i5:

Both in stock according to the websites, in case you need to price-beat and advertised deal.
