wish they would come out with a decent unit for single din that has independent gps (no carplay / auto) and features, like the Chinese units. 600 + for just a screen to mirror your phone is a rip off

    • +2

That was a shocking discovery for me too that most of modern units are just dumb Apple CarPlay/Android Auto "receivers".

      • +1

it's why i ended up buying one of the chinese units. not here yet, but hoping it works well, most people who know anything about it seem to be positive (joying) but there are some who are negative, not sure if that's bias or legitimate criticism.

i want to get in my car and not have to fiddle around with my phone every single time, if i'm using my phone, i may as well just use a mount on the window and cut out the middle man, save myself 600 bucks.

  • At half the price the Atoto is just as good if not better in some areas, like resolution.

    • Keen to know more. Have you used Atoto units vs other mainstream units? How did you find them?

      • I haven't used other mainstream units such as Pioneer or Sony etc, but I have at least had experiences with 3 units from late model cars. The Atoto is impressive for what it does. The resolution is better than any of the ones I had from Ford Focus, Mazda CX5 or Honda CRV. The start-up speed is noticeably faster than any of them. One thing none of them can do is wireless android like the Atoto I have now. Also being able to store Google Maps for offline use is a bonus.
Just to cap everything above, it is easy to adopt Android Auto and relatively cheap too. I don't know why car manufacturers like Mazda would charge $500 to convert with an outdated screen.

Having had and reccomended Atoto, I wouldn't do it going forward. Too many issues. The amount of times I would start the car, and my phone wouldn't connect so I'd have to turn the car off and on again. And when I'm driving long distance the device would just disconnect my phone. I bought the s7 model which lasted 2 months before having similar issues. Ended up getting a Pioneer SPH-DA360DAB with wireless car play and has been a dream for the last 6 months. I didn't realise how dim the Atoto screens were either.
For sure if you just want a cheap system the Atoto can't be beaten IMO, but not worth it if you use the car a lot.

thanks for that review. yeah definitely some concerns I had. Stats always look good on paper but when you actually use it, its unreliable.

      • I haven't had any issues since installing it 2 months ago. I got the A6 PF, it's been a dream run and the wireless Android Auto is a very welcome unexpected bonus.
I don't have any issues even with the wireless connection, Spotify, Google Maps, Waze, phone calls receiving and outgoing, and messages such as from SMS, Whatsapp, the Messenger.
I am using it with Pixel 4a running Android 13, previously I was on 12.

        • Yep I had zero issues for a few months too. Hopefully yours won't have any going forward. I had the a6 and s7 models with iPhone. Yea the android auto/apple car play does all the spotify/maps/waze/calls/messages etc very well. Just all up to the head unit to maintain the connection which is where my Atoto units failed over time.
The resolution on these pioneer units are actually slightly higher or the same as the Atoto

        • The resolution of the Pioneer is 800 x 480 and the Atoto is 1024 x 600 QLED.

          • @craving: You are right, my old Atoto was lower res but the A6 and S7 are about the same.

            PPI
169.55 pixels per in - Atoto (IPS not QLED)
137.2 pixels per in - Pioneer
462.63 pixels per in - iphone 11 pro

So I guess they about the same anyway. The only thing I miss from the Atoto was the fast boot up, the Pioneer a bit slower, but still faster than my Mazda 3 infotainment.

I had a nightmare situation with an S8 standard. Was so excited to use the feature set and it seemed like most were happy with it.

Long story short, I couldn't get rid of an audible hiss in my custom installation. It didn't matter what I tried I couldn't get rid of it. I was convinced there was something wrong with the circuitry and it couldn't ground properly. 3-4 months of going back and forth with the retailer where I was getting the 'the fault is on my end' and 'it's behaving normally', but with wildly inconsistent testing and reasoning.

Eventually I bit the bullet and purchased an adapter to plug it into the factory configuration on a MK6 Golf and surprise, the hissing was still there.

A notice that I was taking this outcome to Consumer Affairs was finally enough to get the retailer to accept a return and refund. It completely burnt me on going for another ATOTO even though much of the pain was on the retailer.

Bought a DMH-A5450BT it works as expected… More money, less features. No stress.

    • Can this connect to an external AM/FM antenna?

  • Need a doubble dim amp but without the touchscreen.

  • I'm keen on getting this but does anyone know where I can get some information about what accessories I need to install it on a toyoya kluger 2013?

    • Aerpro: https://aerpro.com/vehicles/toyota/toyota-kluger-2007-2013
Have used in all my previous installs and will be using again this time around for my wife's car.

    • I can't recommend ryda.com.au any higher. Chat to them online or send them an email, and they will find all the parts required for the head unit and the car. What adaptors/facia etc etc. Can also ask for a better price as a bundle. They shipped my items very fast and all items worked perfectly.

    • Thank you for the info guys. Another stupid question, for reverse camera, how do I know which one will work or I can only use the pioneer ones?

      • Both work, one has parking lines (RCAM2), the other does not (RCAMAVIC).
Edit: just read your question properly, sorry, not sure about other camera brands.
RCAMAVIC recommended for this head unit as it supports selectable parking line guides

        • I thought the RCAMAVIC doesn't have parking lines?

          • +1

@wayne7190: The Pioneer DMH-Z6350BT unit has selectable/moveable parking lines built in to the head unit, so you don't require them as a function of the camera itself.
The RCAM2 model has the parking lines built in to the camera, built for head units that don't have the selectable parking lines built in to the head unit. Hope that makes sense.

  • Bought the Sony XAV5000 and in hindsight, wish I paid extra bought one of these instead.

Reason being the Sony is airplay over USB only. Half the times I plug the USB in the CarPlay doesn’t get recognised. If it was wireless I wouldn’t have this issue and could simply use enter the car and wireless be recognised.

    • i have same units in 2 of my cars, had the same issue until I replace USB cable with a good quality one, now no issues..

  • I have this model, a few annoying things I noticed :
    - there is a big delay (1+ seconds) if you play a video on your phone and want to listen to the audio through Bluetooth.
    - same for the hdmi input and the screen mirroring is pretty much useless.
    - the CarAv app to update the firmware is really really bad, use the usb method to update it.
    - close to where I live there are 2 specific areas where wireless android auto will disconnect when I go through them.
    - usb files are sorted randomly, and if there is no MP3 tag on the file, the unit skip the first 10s of the track.
    - the touch screen can be slow and don't register some actions

  • Anyone got any thoughts on this vs the DMH-A5450BT at $551.34?
Really only looking for a fairly basic wireless CarPlay head unit, so can't see many (if any) features that I'd use of the more expensive one, but happy to be told of useful stuff.

    • +1

Might want to go to the pioneer aus site and compare their specifications. I bought the z6350bt a few months ago.

Ive noticed though the a5450bt doesn't have time alignment, high res audio or ability to upscale compressed music (Advanced Sound Retriever). How useful these things are i'm not too sure myself. I can say that i do use the Advanced Sound Retriever since i listen to music from youtube at times and prefer using it at level 1 (theres also a level 2) and it sounds a bit less flat, but could just be a preference thing.

Wish i could be more helpful but i'm new to car audio so cant really provide much more.
