Gerber Suspension NXT Multitool $54 ($52.65 with eBay Plus) Delivered @ Knives and More eBay

Original Coupon Deal

Hi all,

Was after a new entry level multi-tool and came across this. I would typically look at a Leatherman Sidekick / Wingman in this price range but they haven't been this cheap in a long time (if ever).

The Suspension NXT gets overall great reviews, the only real negatives are that it doesn't come with a belt sheath (but has a good pocket clip), and that the awl isn't chisel-ground so a little harder to user it as a reamer (but still possible). I like that it has spring loaded pliers, outside-accessible tools and a proper Philips head driver.

    a belt sheath

If it makes you feel better the leatherman included sheathes (for the wave at least) is crap lol

    • I've owned a number of leatherman tools over the years and the sheaths have always been ok for me (both nylon and leather ones). What was wrong with yours?

      • Just wasn’t smooth in sheathe and unsheathe. I have two nylon ones.

I usually just keep a wave in my main pants pocket for easy access.

  • How does this brand compare to Leatherman? The Wingman is $81.51 in this deal.

I've personally not had as much experience with Gerber as Leatherman. But from my research / reading:

Gerber as a brand has been diluted in recent years by lots of cheaply made 'gimmick' products, but they also still make fairly good products, just depends on what actual product you are looking at. Generally their multi-tools are pretty good and comparable to Leatherman, and in America tools like the one in this deal carry a lifetime warranty (but I don't think that is offered on any of their tools in other countries)

As mentioned in the post, at this price point Leatherman doesn't really have a competing tool (at least not in Australia). The closest would be the Sidekick / Wingman models, but in all the comparisons I've seen between those and this Gerber, people prefer the Gerber from a build / quality and toolset perspective.

      • I was under the impression that Gerber knives are made in China and Leatherman made in the US. Hence the price difference.

I’ve got a Leatherman Skeletool which I love lots. I used to have a Wave but I lost it. The quality of these is tops.

        • if you want US-made Gerber multitools, the Multi-plier 400/600 and Centerdrive are what you're after.

    • Leatherman has a better quality product in my opinion. Gerber gear I have feels chunky, mashed up and not as good of a feel in the hands and pocket.. But it still does the job.
I still grabbed one of these.

Leatherman is made in the US. For something that you'll likely only buy once, I prefer to get something that I know will last longer.

yep. Leatherman is way better but at a cost.

I think people have to be realistic about their spend… if this is a $67 thing… say $50 usd… then of course its going to be made in China and Gerber dont give a shit about after sales… these things are designed to sit around and do very light duty occasionally… maybe in your pocket and you whip it out onsite to do a minor thing without having to root around in your ute tool box…

having owned a few leatherman & gerber I honestly don;t think the leatherman is worth the premium price, I've snapped tool & blades on both and warranty on both has been great and hassle free. Gerber recently sent me a brand new tool just because the springs had worn out & this was on a tool with quite a few years on it and well used. I genuinely wanted some new springs but they didn't stock them well thanks now I have a new tool.

  • I just bought the Wingman for $83.60 but would have bought this instead as it serves a similar purpose for most people and the price is right.I've had no issues with my other Gerber other than the fiddly slide-out set up on my Fisherman Multi pliers.

I have this exact gerber and 3 other leathermans (wave+, signal and recently the orange charge+ that was popular here)
This can do the job just fine at 3 or more times cheaper, but if you're going to use it often just go for the leathermans and be done with it.
My gerber handles also didn't line up flush when closed, I had to bend them to get it aligned better and even then it's not 100%. All my leathermans are dead straight, and I wouldn't be able to bend them 1mm if I tried. So that says a lot on the build quality.

Good for the price, but if you want something to last a lifetime, then get a Leatherman

Here is the Project Farm comparison video with both this Gerber and two Leatherman. The Gerber Suspension ranks a B VS both leatherman which rank some form of A. Every review is subjective but it's give a good vibe of the product and similar products out there.

    • Another comparison from OutdoorGearLab is also in favour of Letherman.

I have two Gerber multitools and they really are uncomfortable to hold and use with force, where my Leathermans are more ergononic and can be held and used harder with less discomfort.

  • Gerber's lower-end multitools seem good on paper but there's always something that doesn't fit right.
don't get me wrong, they're still better than the no-brand tools places like aldi and supercheap auto flog to unsuspecting customers

Doesn't Aldi have something like that on special for $17 ATM?

    • if it has a hammer on it its probably, no defintely completely shit

you cant reasonably carry a hammer in your pocket and if you leave it in your toolbox you probably have a like a hammer already there
