Don't burn money on cheap setups. I went through a bunch of Tenda Nova nodes and found that my Telstra smart modem gen 3 with only one node provided almost as good coverage and much faster speeds. I reckon any decent non mesh setup beats cheapo mesh setups.

    • I'm not familiar with these Wavlink mesh devices, but I can tell you there is nothing wrong with the Tenda Nova hardware. I've used them in many implementations and have had nothing but great results. Your poor performance was probably due to having both the Testra modem and Tenda system running in routed mode resulting in a double NAT situation. If your internet gateway device can't be put into pure bridge mode then it is best to run the Tenda in bridged mode. This removes the routing functionality from the Tenda and you will lose some features such as parental controls, but performance will not be impacted by the need for the CPU to route and perform NAT, which can have a significant impact if you have lots of devices on your network.

      • Nah it was running in bridge mode. Also tried running standalone and couldn't handle the load. It was fairly stable though but super slow. Max of around 5 devices on 5ghz and forces everything else onto 2.4ghz. It did handle 90+ devices though.

        • Were you running the MW3's by any chance? I have found them to be quite underpowered in routed mode. They are fine for satellites, but I find that having a MW6 or better at the gateway makes a huge difference. I run a combo of MW3's and MW6's on my property with 50+ devices and no noticeable impact on performance.

          • @aldroid: Half mw3 and half mw5. 8 nodes total.

            • @10101010101: Interesting. That is a scenario I have not experienced. All my devices that should be connected at 5Ghz are, and all my older devices and smartlights are on 2.4Ghz as expected.

I've got a cheap Tenda setup at home. Reinforced concrete second floor which kills wifi signal. Have ethernet in the bedrooms so a tenda unit upstairs gives all the bedrooms good coverage and a much better setup than the old wfi extender and needing to remember to move to the diferent wifi network to get a better connection.

zero complaints from anyone and not had to reboot it since installing months ago.

  • I know that this is not the right forum, but thought I could try.
I have a good modem-router (D-Link) covering most of my house, and an access point (ethernet connected) at around the 2/3-of-the-house point. My coverage of signal is decent.
My problem is that my AP (Tenda) I configured with same signal name/password as the modem. I notice that:
    - if I've got too many people visiting, the Tenda AP drops connectivity
    - when I am walking around the house using the wifi, it can drop as it switches between connection point.

Would getting a better AP resolve my issue? OR
Would a mesh system be better? OR
Should I make a different configuration of the current system.

    Thank you in advance.

    • Whenever I setup AP's or mesh networks I always disable wifi on the gateway router. Even if you're running the same username/password you'll miss out on features like fast handover, capacity oriented mode, etc. In your situation where you have ethernet available, I would look at using a single Ubiquiti AP in a central location. You may find that 1 AP is enough for your property. If not, you can mesh additional Ubiquiti AP's wirelessly. If you don't want to go down the Ubiquiti route, the TP-Link Deco mesh systems would be your next best option (very reliable and easy to setup).

  • So I have a great router already and just want to extend the coverage in my house and backyard. Can I just add this system into my current router set up or do I need to replace my old router with this?

  • Check if your current router if they support the EasyMesh standard then buy satellites that are also EasyMesh compatible. Cross brand compatibility.
