While this thing goes like the clappers, the struts and a lot of the body is still plastic. One crash and it will break. You can replace the parts with an aftermarket aluminium replacement kit but that is another $50-60. The batteries and charger it comes with are crap.

    • +3

Bad advice. Plastic is better than aluminium in cars like this. Plastic will absorb impacts better. Aluminium will transfer force to other components and cause worse damage. You'd only get an aluminium upgrade for a speed run car.

The toughest bashers are plastic, not metal.

But you're correct in that this car is relatively fragile. If you drive it hard, you will need parts.

The lipo battery it comes with is good quality, assuming it's the blue wltoys lipo.

      • I have found it hard finding plastic replacement parts. Everything online seems to be aluminium. Any tips?

        • -1

          Banggood

      • Also the aluminum parts are built with crap tolerances so bearing slop around rather than being a secure fit.

      • -2

Terrible advice. One minor crash and my strut broke. After replacing with the aluminium kit I have had multiple crashes and no worries at all. Sure, not everything perfectly lines up with the kit but the resilience of the car is 100x better than the plastic crap. The batteries take hours to charge and don't last long at all. If you know anything about RC car batteries then you would know these are garbage.

Have you ever even used an RC car before?

        • +1

You do you, champ. But go and look at a $700 Traxxis Slash and tell me what it's made of.

The idea is that you want a cheap, plastic arm to break in a heavy crash rather that transferring all the shock into the diff box or drive shaft.

But please enjoy your aluminium parts.

I've capacity tested the wltoys batteries; blue were at the stated capacity, silvers were about 200mah under. The USB chargers are understandably slow (using 5volts to charge a 7.4volt battery means a big drop in amps), but do the job as a basic balanced charger. The runtime of these batteries is exactly what would be expected for the car and capacity. Brushed motors are not very efficient and quite often the biggest gain for going brushless is runtime.

I had a crash that bent my plastic front swing arm, I just heatgunned it and bent it back. I did get aluminum c hubs after snapping the plastic (more of weak design than the material), but the aluminum is just moving the force to something else and still likely to bend/snap if I hit it again. The c hubs are absolutely the only part I would replace with alu, and only if I actually broke the plastic first (only broken 1 of 6).

        • The batteries are fine and I've got a decent selection of various brands. The charger is the issue.

  • +3

Good price for this car. I have 2. Just be aware that you'll want a decent charger at some point since the one in the box is rubbish. And the brushed motor won't last forever, so you'll need to upgrade to a brushless system eventually which will cost around $100. I used this guide https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/144001-brushless-upgr…

Lots of info about this car, upgrades etc on Quadify's blog. He's the go-to man for these cars.

All parts are available through Banggood or AliExpress. Lots also available on eBay and Amazon.

    • Why do you say that?

I suspect the original charger has ruined 2 of my batteries after a few charges. Did you have the same problem?

      • +1

It's not a balance charger. These cars run 2S (2 cell) lipo batteries so the cells need to remain balanced, or they degrade. Without a balance charger they become unbalanced quickly.

My batteries are still going strong after 18 months, but I used a decent charger straight away.

  • My son and I muck around with one of these and have a great time. Lots of plastic, but only minor repairable damage so far. It's pretty quick for the $90!

  • Mine the back wheels collapse a lot, which I then have to spend time finding the driveshafts.

    • You mean the CVD drive shafts? You could try to drill the metal plate where the lower arm sits on and place a droop screw in to reduce the suspension travel (otherwise just put in sticky foam pads if you don't want to drill). Most expensive RCs you can put in droop screws. Also reduces the risk of bent shock rods, though WLtoys are lightweight and chances of bending shock rods are next to zero.

Or pack a small section of silicone tubing on either end of the CVD shaft.

      • The tie-rods will disconnect and yes the dog bones fall out.

      • +1

These have droop screw holes already in the swingarms, no drilling needed.

    • I replaced the rear dog bones with CVDs that match the front. They can't fall out.

  • Any advice for a WLToys for a first RC for young kid (5yo)? Want something more robust, but doesn't need to be fast. Have been looking at the 12427/12428 (I think that the 12428 is the newer replacement).

    • +2

You'd be better off with a HBX 16889 variant. Much, much tougher than the wltoys cars since they're all fairly fragile. Also more capable off road. The 16889a Pro is brushless, oil shocks and pretty much unbreakable but more expensive. The Flyhal Fc600 is a clone with a different body.

      Something like this (brushed): https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/184494404938

Brushed and brushless and multiple battery options: https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005004292172107.html

But yes, if you want to stick with wltoys, the 12428 is batter basher than the 144001.

      • +3

I bought the 124019 as it's the style my 6y/o liked best. When shipping was delayed and wanted it for his birthday, I bought a local HBX16889 (edit: A-pro).

124019 is def the better car, it's less twitchy with the longer base. Throw on a set of 16889 wheels and it eats up the thick grass. Power turned down from max gives great run time.

Very first run to the skate park and the boy sent the 124019 to the moon up the 1/4 pipe, crashed down on the cement unscathed.

        All IMO.

        • +1

I agree to a point that the HBX won't handle as well on hard surfaces, but for a younger kid, robustness is probably more important. The HBX goes really well on dirt.

        • We got the 124018 version of that car. Ran it down a hill straight into a metal pole.

Bent the front control arm otherwise was completely fine. Drove fine with the bent arm until a pack of spares arrived. Only cost ~$5 to fix from memory.

      • Awesome thanks, I like the look of that HBX 16889 better.

I'm guessing that brushless > brushed in terms of robustness, or is it only speed?

        • +1

Brushed motors need maintenance. You need to oil the bearings every few runs.

          • @sallan75: Ok yep brushless it is then!

          • @sallan75: Never done any motor maintenance on any of our brushed WLtoys, never had an issue.

        • +1

Brushless tend to be more reliable and have longer life..

    • +1

For a 5 year old I wouldn't get anything good. My 10 year old will still do stupid things with my Traxxas Stampede.

    • We got a WLtoys 12428-B and it is fine to throw to the kids. It doesn't have the crazy top speed of some of the others but its still fast enough.

The 124018 has been good also. Its faster though.

Never had any issues with the brushed motors across 5 WLtoys cars. Never serviced the motors in any way at all. Not sure why you would bother, they are cheap anyway.
Also never had an issue with the supplied charger, it is a balance charger BTW. All of our battery packs still work fine. A better one would be nice (and probably safer).

      • +1

My lipos we're never balanced after using the supplied charger. It also takes hours to charge a lipo. Crazy slow.

The motors aren't the worst. I've had one burn out. The wltoys ESCs are pretty rubbish, though. I've had two of those melt.

        • Seems there has been a few different chargers. We ended up with several of these: https://www.wl-toys.com/Wltoys-144001-charger-and-balance-ch…

We have a few spare packs so charge time hasn't been an issue. Never needed a pack in a hurry.

I haven't bothered checking after charging if they are indeed balanced. I've looked at getting something better but then figure if i havent had any issues is it worth it? What charger are you using?

The ESC in the 124018 gets crazy hot. Putting the power switch there was an unfortunate design choice for those not wanting burnt finger tips. So far though, havent had any electronics fail yet.

          • @Duff5000: I'm using an ISDT Q6 Nano.

          • @Duff5000: And yeah, the chargers we got were quite different to that one you linked. I can't comment on it.

  • Recommendations for 1/10 or 1/12 SC truck within $150? Does Wltoys make any decent ones?

    • No they don't. The HBX 901a goes pretty well but it's not a short course truck.

In Wltoys I think the 104009 is about as close as you'll get, but I haven't driven one so can't really comment. Quadify's review is here https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/wl-toys-104009-monste…

There's also the 12423 but I know nothing about it.

      • I was looking at Feiyou FY08 and also there seems to be another Eboyu FY08 which is cheaper but potentially the same car under a different brand. Thats more around the $220 mark but may be worth it. Any thoughts?

        • I know nothing about them sorry, except that that brand doesn't seem to have a following like other brands do eg HBX, WL, LC Racing etc.

          • @wombat81: Which SCT do you recommend at a higher price bracket or good value for money?

            • +1

@efheichr: It's hard to go past Traxxis, but $$$

              • @wombat81: With Traxxas you can go to your local hobby shop and get parts. With WLtoys you are waiting a month for parts to ship from China.

                • @sallan75: This is true, but local hobby shops are becoming less and less common. Especially outside of major cities.

I'm in one of the largest regional cities in the country, and there's nowhere here to buy spares, so I'd be buying online anyway.

                  • +1

@wombat81: Hobbies Direct delivered some Traxxas parts within 24 hours for me earlier this month. I am still waiting for the Wltoys parts from Banggood ordered the same day.

  • Paid $196 for two, and only got refunded $183… why did it even let the sale go through to my address then?
