OzBargainers love smart home products and on sale at 40% off is this smart photoelectric smoke detector in a pack of 1 or 2. Since this is Tuya based you can configure it to send you alerts via the Tuya Smart app when smoke is detected and when the batteries are low or need replacing. Certainly useful if you're not home.

I've been doing some research into these and this model has a Certificate of Conformity from CSIRO ActivFire so it's compliant and safe to use in Australia.

  • Do you know how long the battery could last?

    • Advertised as being a 10-year smoke alarm.

      • The description may have been re-used from a 10 year lithium battery model, as it also says that this unit runs on DC 2*1.5V AA

        • This is why research beyond the listing is always important. Siterwell says 10 years.

          • +1

@Clear: That will be the time before the sensor/unit needs to be replaced, rather than the battery life of the unit

      • +1

For such wifi connection smoke alarm, normally the batteries need to be replaced every 8 months. I doubt it could last more than 1 year. For zigbee / bluetooth ones, it could be longer.

        • I'm just quoting what they're saying…..

          • +3

@Clear: 10 years is the life of the sensor and not the battery.

            • @NETBEAR: Then shouldn't they say 10 year sensor instead of battery…….

              • @Clear: Maybe it only connects to wifi when it senses fire? Although that would be worrying…

              • @Clear: The same listing has such excellent english phrases as "Human alarm sounds - it will be avoid people to be scared suddenly by a loudness alarm sound."

【Low Battery Warning】 Smoke alarm is powered by DC 2*1.5V AA battery.
                replaceable battery

        • Even with beloved mighty eneloop !!!???

        • +1

My Nest wifi smoke alarm is 6 years old and still running off the original set of AAs

          • @damion: Is this still available?

            • @gadgetguy: Yeah, they’re sold in a lot of common places - officeworks, bunnings etc.

It’s a smart idea until there’s an electrical fire and wifi gets cut off first

    • +2

That's why it's always a smart idea to have more than one smoke alarm ;) Worst case it will still beep if smoke is detected like a traditional smoke alarm anyway.

    • +4

It functions as a normal smoke alarm, but also with wifi notifications. How is the issue you raised any different to any other smoke alarm?

      • Exactly, plus you can easily run your modem/router off a UPS as i've done and any wifi devices will continue to function in an outage.

  • At least in Victoria, smoke alarms fitted to houses built after August 1 1997, or which have been largely renovated or extended since then must be fitted with hardwired smoke alarms.

For houses built after May 1 2014, or which have been largely renovated or extended since then must be fitted with interconnected hardwired smoke alarms.

    • This is interesting. I've been renting in so many places, some of them built after 1997. It's always been just 9V battery smoke alarms, not hardwired or interconnected.

I'm sitting in a 10 yo building right now, all smoke alarms run on batteries here. Nobody ever pointed it out.

  • Does it work with SmartThings?

    • +1

It would need a custom device handler, and with ST phasing out Groovy and moving to edge drivers you can't really rely on much from ST at the moment.

  • +1

Would these be compliant in qld for interconnected alarms, or would they need to be hard wired?

    • Like to know as well

      • Answered

    • +1

      Not compliant on 2 fronts.

      Not interconnected, wifi notifications.
Regular AA Bats not 10 year liths or hardwired mains.

  • Wanted a smoke detector for the shed, will give this a go. Wifi is a bonus at this price, wonder if it can be flashed with ESPhome or tasmota?

    • Yes I wondered about tasmota.

  • Ugh.. Tuya has been harder and harder to integrate with HASS. Their API keeps expiring.
Any luck if this one can work with HASS?

The fact this has a non-disturb mode should automatically disqualify it from being Australian Standard. There's a debate going on as to whether or not hush buttons on remotes are compliant or not. Wont be surprised if the AS:3786 gets yeeted from this alarm in the future.

    • -2

Everything can be hushed if you pull the power /s

      • Electronics need power to operate and without it they can't operate. Now two people have learnt something today.

  • Far out, would be good if zigbee, but wifi? Don't want to replace batteries every 8mth.

I got some zigbee ones off ali, not sure how "good". anyone know if certified ones exist?
