I'm in the middle of rice cooker shopping, and I'm losing my shit.

I'd love to not spend $500 on a rice cooker, but I keep over researching to the point where I can't pull the trigger on anything.

Does anyone have experience using a rice cooker like this, and then moved up to induction heating? Is IH worth the leap in price?

Hi Smashed Crab, I'm in exactly the same state as you :D
So I've just been reading user reviews high and wide for this one (including all the disclosed promotional ones). It has surprisingly high scores, and a lot less of the angry 1-star complaint reviews that people do when their machine breaks.
I'm getting the impression that its close-ish to a cuckoo/ tiger, and way above a kmart job. Might be the sweet spot for us in terms of quality and price.

@Smashed crab To both of you.

I don't have this exact model but I have a similar priced Panasonic that's about 8yrs old and looks roughly the same. It has cooked perfect rice nearly every day for the whole duration.

I wouldn't overthink it too much peeps, I think you'll be ok with this. Kmart garbage doesn't compete at all, this slightly premium are worth it but the super pricey are likely not for most.

Smashed crab To both of you

Can I get in on some of this smashed crab..

            @m9: My crab ain't free.

Thank @eagerfisherman good call. Its so easy to overthink purchases like this. I'm going to take your advice and go for it. Thanks for your help!

      • Yeah, I think so too. There's plenty of time to upgrade down the line.

      • Hi mate I bought this recently and the white rice cooking function seem to be much longer than the cheaper 5-cup SR-DF181WST (usually 15 min for 1 cup rice) we are upgrading from? Did we receive a faulty unit?

    • costco has this on sales all the times. I would wait for it to be on sale again if I were you

      • Thanks, but it is still more than twice the price on sale. Is it a lot better?

with me, yes, the difference was very obvious. But I'm asian so rice is a big thing for me

          • @ericc: I only cook 1-2 cups of rice at a time.
Can I do this small amount in a 10 cup machine ?
or is the minimum higher than 1 cup of rice ?

    • We use a large nonstick deep pan to do our rice. Works pretty well.. Is the main reason to buy these things to have the timer/auto shutoff or something? I just set a timer and turn the stove off..

      • It's more for the consistency and ease of use. Also frees up a burner on the stove to cook other stuff while the rice is cooking.

        • hmm fair - I don't think we ever use up all 4 burners, or get an inconsistent rice using the large deep pan method.. and yet, here I am, still contemplating buying one because i've seen it on OzB 🤣

    • I have a very similar one for about 4 years. It's been good and my Singaporean Chinese wife loves it, particularly the congee function.

Better deal here for the 10-cup

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725160

Was $129.36 delivered to WA for me. Bought this for my parents as they need a new one. I've had it for about 2 years and would highly recommend.

    • I only need to cook for a family of 2 adults 1 teenager, should I get the 5 or 10-cup?

      • I only use it to mostly cook 2 or 3 cups of rice at a time. Occasionally I've had to make 5 or more. I don't think it really matters of you use it for less. Also, this is now cheaper than the smaller one.

10 cup is also fantastic for slow cooking meals too (delicious meal ready in 1.5-2 hours due to it’s pressure nature. Makes enough for 4-6 meals in it. Which is perfect. I use it for just for me and my partner and we’ve always got lunch the next day.
Otherwise, just rice. I usually put 2 cups in there. Which gives me enough for 4-5 meals. Which, combo with big cook up dinners gives plenty of left overs for lunches. Then I also have good space for when family comes over and cooking for 6-8 people.

  • It's showing as $169.15 for me. Must be targeted price

  • Now $169.

We have had one of these electronic Panasonic (National) rice cookers we purchased in Malaysia 20yrs ago, and it has worked fine for nice fluffy rice, and even Rice Porridge etc. We use it about 3x a week, so that could be 3000 uses, and it is still going.
