Why do you want to know?

    • +13

      Curiosity, I guess.

      • +1

None atm, but I'd a nice Analogue wristwatch

  • +7

my FULLY PAID ROLEX. I mean, I am buying 2 cars, what card I can use to utilise for points.

    • +14

Maybe get some points for paying off that "double parking" ticket you received recently… :D

Will provide update once the magistrate tells me. WTF is this violation. I already have my schedule will update accordingly, lol.

    Amazfit t-Rex.

    • It really depends on your taste and your needs. There's almost something out there for everyone!

The Apple Watch has the best sensors, software and support… but it looks ugly and closed ecosystem.

The Samsung Watch 3 and 4 (Classic), are the next best options, with option between WearOS and TizenOS.

There's plenty of sports watches out there (Garmin, etc), with questionable sensors and poor support, and they're quite pricey.

For the budget conscious, there's the likes of TicWatch, Realme, Huawei, Xiaomi. Either labelled as "smartwatch" or "fitness band". They do the job but at even more questionable standard which makes you wonder if you need all those features.

The Amazfit Bip S feels like the spiritual successor to the Pebble Watch. While the Amazfit Neo feels like the spiritual successor to the "Casio Royale". Amazfit makes some of the best and value smart-watches out there.

Going lower than that, and you're in the land of custom modded wriststraps, G-Shock models, Citizen Eco-Drive, and more bog standard watches.

      • +2

surprised why you think garmins are pricey with questionable sensors.

I got a venu 2 for my wife for about $250.

Don't look at RRP, this is ozbargain and no one pays full price. It is easier to get garmins at 50% than apple smart watches.

      • +1

Yes i am interested in the idea that Garmin has questionable sensors? I would have thought the running/triathlon crew would have ferreted this out a long time ago. Everything i have watched on Desfit says the opposite.

        • Haha its not. Garmin is very well regarded by the triathlon/hiking communities.
          '
I mean old mate classes G-shocks down with bog standard watches without realising 'Master of G' is a thing.

      • Mate I thought Garmin had the best sensors on the market and Apple sensors, particularly GPS, were pretty $hithouse?

You think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it.

    • +1

      You joke

But there are Solar Watches like the Tough Solar Casio G-Shocks, lasts for 7 months on full charge

    • But the sun is a deadly lazer!

  • +15

No need for a timepiece. Things happen when they happen.

  • +6

Mi band 6 stays on my wrist all the time. Only charge it once every 3-4 days.

    • +1

Just got the Mi band 7 a couple of months ago, epic battery life with AOD off, I charge it every 7 days but it'll go 9-10 days. I've had more feature rich smart-watches before and just never used the extra features.

      • +1

Nice. I’ll probably buy a Mi Band again once my 6 eventually dies.

        • I charge my Mi band 6 every 7-10 days - only notifications are calls and SMS

  • +7

Time is relative. The rate at which time passes depends on your frame of reference - don't use a watch to ruin the experience.

    • +41

I should repeat this to my boss when I have a deadline.

      • +13

I suppose he will pay you "when the time comes" then. Haha

I rotate between two, depending on how I'm feeling. 126710BLNR 'Batgirl' & 126610LV 'Starbucks'.

Would love a Panda Daytona one day, but I can't afford grey market prices and its a 5+ year wait.

    • How did you get such recently released Models if you’re not paying grey?

It’s been about 5 years since I put my name for a Panda Daytona. I’d like to think I’m only 10 years away, but I doubt the store will ever give me a call.

      • Originally had my name down for a hulk before it was discontinued, so ended up swapping to the Starbucks and took about 8 months. The GMT was only a fairly recent purchase after waiting 2 years.

        • Do you mind me which AD?

      • I'm an Omega guy, but I love the look of that Panda.

    • Managed to get 'batman' on the grey but now looking to get a gold daytona with rubber strap. Dam these prices!

    • Truly gorgeous watches.

  • +3

Apple Watch. If it weren't for the notifications and heart rate tracking I wouldn't wear a watch at all because I always have my phone on me. When I was a kid, before the average person had a phone, then sure you need a watch to tell the time. Nowadays they could probably remove the time telling function from smart watches if they really wanted to.

I don't know about some people, but I find it refreshing to not carry a phone with me all the time, everywhere. Sometimes I'll go for a walk and I'll leave my phone at home because I don't want to be disturbed or to have to carry it. I'll still wear a watch so I know when to head back.

      • Can't listen to music while out without my phone. I could with a cellular Apple Watch, but then I can also take calls and receive notifications without the phone too.

        • +1

          Yes you can
          Download music to your watch.

    Garmin all the time.

  • -2

garmin - hate it - want a proper watch but dont want to pay $2000

    • What do you consider a proper watch?
Do you mean a nice mechanical? If so, you can get some very nice mechanical watches for under $1,000. Sub $500 even has a lot of nice offerings.

      • Just been looking at some Tissot and Tag etc - What brands are good mechanical under $500?

        • +7

Tissot is a pretty good brand to look at, they seem to be good value. I have a sub $1,000 Tissot with a Swiss movement, 80 hour power reserve, ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal.
For under $500, I would start with Seiko, Orient and maybe Citizen.
The Orient Kamasu is a very nice watch for under $400 (on Amazon). It has a decent movement, a sapphire crystal and nice styling.
Orient don't market in Australia but they are owned by Seiko Epson.

          • @O15: Thanks for this. That Kamasu looks great.

Ive never really understood the whole manual winding thing so automatic seems like the better choice

            • @Fergy1987: If you don't wear your watch for a while the power reserve will wind out and you'll have to set the time (and date) again. It happens if you don't constantly wear an automatic.

If I were to get another mechanical watch I would get a manual winder without a date. The watch is thinner because there is no automatic winder adding a few millimetres. I have a Vostok Komandirskie with a date and setting the date is a hassle with its movement.

I haven't been wearing it because solar quartz is just way too convenient especially when I have a featherweight G-Shock for physical work and a Seiko Arnie for other times.

              • @Tinkle Ass: I also have a Vostok Scuba Dude. I liked the idea of how robust it was but in practice it doesn't keep good time. This is probably because I thought it was indestructible and treated it as such. I agree solar quartz is the obvious choice.

        • Vostok

        • +1

I’ve got a Tissot Le Locle and love it. Goes well with many outfits and is timeless.

        • I have a Tissot prx, it's not the automatic one but the quality is great and it's a good entry level watch.

    • Funny you say that. I was collecting for a while and had some nice mechanicals, and a Seiko Turtle as my beater. Got a Garmin G1 as it was their cheapest that has a full on dive computer.
Now my only regret is that i didnt buy a more expensive Garmin. I find it really, really useful on a daily basis.
If you want mechanical be prepared for the servicing cost. They are actually reasonably expensive to own and maintan long term. So you are almost better off to go to the $2k and more……

      • +3

Saltypete is spot on about the servicing cost. This is something I've only become aware of recently after coming back from a holiday. It's not cheap to service watches like this.

My wife bought me a mechanical tagheur (around $5k) as a wedding gift a decade ago which replaced my $80 Seiko.

Let it be known I was very displeased with how much she spent and was sulky faced about it for the entire day until my wife got fed up and told me off that this was a wedding gift.

Basically I came back from a humid region in Asia and the inside was all foggy and misted up. I took it in for repairs and was quoted $990.01. The repairs included (breakdown included)

        Complete service 545.45
        Dial 345.55
        GST 90.01

So you can see it isn't cheap. They also recommend regular servicing (approx $460 every 3-5 years)

To be honest, I was very unhappy because I pretty much felt I had been grabbed by the balls and forced to pay. A repair cost of 20% of the value of the watch and also an ongoing cost every 3 years sounded too much like a appreciating high yielding BMW.

But I had to pay less my wife sees her wedding gift to me completely rusted in a few years

I take good care of my watch (the must expensive thing I've ever worn) and as nice as it looks I do not recommend people to buy it because of the ongoing costs associated with it

Lastly, don't believe the water resistance that is stated on these watches. No matter what it says, the rubber seals around the crown and dials will eventually deteriorate from sweat, heat and moisture and water will get in. Take it off if you are working with anything wet

        • The clincher for me was my Seiko Turtle remake. Great watch, bargain new at around $400. Has suddenly started to gain 5-10 minutes per day. Service cost - $350!,!! It’s not a ripoff - I have dealt with this watchmaker for years, but the time to do a full service, water test etc costs.

I’ll get it serviced by another reliable guy when I next go to China for $100 or so.

This made the Garmin easy - even at over $800.

I don’t mind spending $3-400 to service my Longines, but the Seiko is basically a throwaway. 🤷‍♂️

You're right there. The 1960's incablock J Farren Price that I picked up for ~ $20 around thirty years ago always had cracking in its acrylic crystal, and after sitting neglected in the garage for a decade or so would lose up to a minute a day if I didn't have it on my wrist, suggesting it needs a good clean and lube. It loses a minute or so every month even if I wear it during the day.

A chunk of the crystal fell out about two days ago so it looks like I'm down for the $20-$30 to have it replaced if I keep it. Then again, my LG Urbane battery is still good for a couple of days…

        No problem.

It doesn't have a heart rate monitor or track blood oxygen levels, but it is waterproof to 11,034m.

Great for a journey of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

        • Yes, but can you tell the time at a depth like that? (If your lungs haven't burst)

        • +1

          waterproof to 11,034m

Think jv is referring to altitude, not depth

          • +3

@cashless: Definitely altitude - there is never any depth in his comments

        • s waterproof to 11,034m.

Good for mountain climbing - how is it going down?

    • Same. Seiko Astron here ;)

      • The GPS Solar Limited or the el-cheapo ?

        • Neither

    • Sorry, no good for me.

It never worked. I sleep all day and come alive during the night.

A broken vintage gold plated watch that I got off eBay for $40. Gets a lot of compliments (no joke).

    Seiko Pepsi Turtle from StarBuy

I have a collection of Swatch watches. Wear the one that matches the outfit or mood.

  • Tbh I find myself rotating between g shocks as I can’t be bothered winding my watches.

  • Fitness tracker.

  • Eco drive is quartz but feels like sorcery.

    • Indeed. I just replaced the capacitor in my Nighthawk, after circa 18 years.

      • How much did it cost?

Recently took the dive and invested in Omega Seamaster 300 - Awesome - Love it :-)
