I wear a mechanical watch. While skiing, I was the only one able to confirm the time. The others had glare and gloves touch issues to deal with.

  • +1

I had one of these when I was in year 10.

  • +3

My dads watch, the one Captain Koons gave to me when he came home from the war…

My health insurance gives me points that I can use to reduce the annual insurance premium cost or to reduce the purchase price of fitness items. So I used points to buy a fitness tracker and use the tracker to get more points to reduce my premium. Also more convenient to wear a fitness tracker when running rather than carrying my phone.

    • AIA Vitality?

    • +1

I did that but put the fitness tracker on my dog…points !!!

Got a couple of fancy watches but wear my Casio databank the most.

    • Casio, god tier.

  • Mechanical (self wind or hand wind)

But wouldn't Mechanical self wind be considered an Automatic?

Big difference between the two and should be seperated

    • Self winding is indeed the same as automatic.

Not a big difference between self winding and hand winding in the context of the other watches in the poll.

      • It was more of a rhetorical question haha

I see your point but if you have 9 poll options, another wouldn't hurt.

    • +1

      Yes, self wind is automatic.
As ak said, in the context of the poll they are very similar.
I wasn't sure what the limit was for polls, I was just trying to avoid too many options.
There are a few things which the poll doesn't really account for (outside of 'other'), like whatever is in the Accutron Spaceview 2020.

  • I don't often but when I do it's a watch from etsy with custom engraved text gifted by the missus

    didn't wear anything before that

want an apple watch but don't have or want an iphone. prefer android but I don't want a round smartwatch. prefer square/rectangular like the apple watch.

    • Oppo has a square watch just like apple.

    • +1

"Terrible" is relative. They're never going to be as accurate as a quartz, digital or smart watch, but chronometer-rated mechanical watches can be accurate to within -4/+6 seconds a day, which is pretty good for something running off springs, wheels and gears.

    • +7

Since the invention of mobile phones, I don't think many people are buying mechanical watches solely for a super precise way of tracking the time.

Yes, I look at my watch to see what the time is but more than that, I appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry which goes into a nice mechanical watch.
You could consider it a piece of jewellery and an expression of one's self.
A watch can say a lot about the wearer.

      • -7

True, but men should just get a bracelet or whatever if the watch is just decorative jewellery (as most mechanical watches seems to be).

        • +4

For some guys, that is fair.
When you see some rappers showing off their gaudy AF watches which are basically diamond bracelets which also happen to have a watch movement in them, yeah, I don't think they care much about what goes into making a watch tick.

But I would say a lot, maybe most, are also intrigued by the actual watch movement.

          • @O15:

But I would say a lot, maybe most, are also intrigued by the actual watch movement.

Not saying that isn't ever the case but I think most of the time it's the same sort of thing as wearing fancy label clothes, expensive shoes, latest flagship phone, etc.

    • Why the down-votes? I know it is par for the course on online forums to criticise others, but still wish we humans would rise above such tribalism. Varoufakis' opinion is perfectly valid and depending on your interpretation of 'terrible' in this context, could be factually accurate.

While I like watches, its also fine to others to have a different opinion.

Whats a watch? I remember those in the 1600s'

Fitbit for the functionality. Got a couple of expensive watches, but they don't have any fitness tracking at all, and tbh, in this era, feels like they are just male jewelry (or jewellery)…

  • +1

    Citizen eco-drive

Casio sports watch (and emergency backup piece of paper in my wallet with 4:00pm written on it)

  • The on the wrist kind.

    • +1

So you don’t wear an ankle watch?

    Casio Gshock G5600E

  • +2

I'm impressed with how many mechanical wearers there are amongst OzBargain.

    • +3

They get posted all the time on here.

  • Never wear a watch and never will. I hate the feeling of a watch around my wrist.

    • +12

Once you're used to wearing a watch, it feels weird to leave the house without one.

      • Agreed. I've regularly worn a watch since I was 13, and it's disconcerting not to wear one these days.

    • +1

You might have horological deficiency. See a jeweller before it gets worse.

  • Used to rotate between a few Longines automatics but kept bashing it against walls and shelving at work. Changing a cracked crystal every few months got annoying so now I wear a $60 quartz watch from Aliexpress.

      • +1

It was from a seller called Tiahe sunglass, manufactured by Luobin. The design is very similar to the Junghan's Max Bill. I don't think they make that model anymore because it didn't come up when I clicked on my old order.

Who needs a watch when you have a phone with you 24/7?

    • I’m not trying to be pretentious but maybe as you grow you’ll understand more about style. Again you don’t need one. You could say to people why have an earring or a necklace etc when you don’t need it. Men generally don’t have many options for jewellery and watches these days satisfy that. Not to mention having an automatic watch tell tell accurate to two second without electricity and just by your movement is special. It’s like a heartbeat that’s always with you and relies on you. Not to mention it’s stylish and signifies to men and women that your time is worth something. Celebrities for example who are going to the red carpet don’t need to know the time. But there’s a reason they wear it. It’s also quite expensive too so could also have status. You have to have a dad that shows and explains this to you sometimes to truely understand. My dad wore one and I want to remind myself and be like him. I hope I’m not coming across as pretentious but these are my reasons why I value watches and what I think of when I see others wearing a nice time piece

        • I think you missed out this bit

“Not to mention having an automatic watch tell tell accurate to two second without electricity and just by your movement is special. It’s like a heartbeat that’s always with you and relies on you.”

I have a Tudor watch which is a great watch and I don’t think many people outside of watch enthusiasts know that name. I love engineering and fascinated by watches. I also invest into shares instead of buying fancy things to impress others so I’m not sure if I need more confidence.

It’s also an heirloom that I can appreciate and pass down to my kids. I can’t do that with a car or many other items.

Appreciate your valid opinion though but do hope life gets better for you man honestly. Wasting time arguing or putting down an internet stranger like myself is something that does not add to your life. Have a great day

          • -6

@v7dal: You write essays that boil down to you want other people to see you wearing the watch, maybe see a therapist and work on that self confidence instead of relying on consumer goods to project a false image for yourself.

            • +2

@Willy Beamish: Appreciate your valid opinion though but do hope life gets better for you man honestly. Wasting time arguing or putting down an internet stranger like myself is something that does not add to your life. Have a great day. I’ll leave it here

                • +4

@Willy Beamish: Yet here you are perpetuating your argument - its obvious who cares more about what others think of them. Why put so much effort in criticising v7dal's personal choices?

Most people wear watches because they enjoy doing so. It is for themselves, not for anyone else. More power to them.

Watches combine function and attractive aesthetics. Mechanical watches add the beauty of the mechanical design and accuracy of manufacturing. Some high end watches have their parts hand crafted so there is appreciation of the artist's work and art form.

Its fine for you not to wear a watch and it is fine for v7dal to wear one. What is not good is personal attacks and criticising others just because they hold a different opinion to yours.

People whose jobs are time sensitive and at the same time the attention requirement forbids the action of reaching into the pocket to get the phone out to know the time.

      • -7

Yes, such a time sensitive job they would not have a phone on them to contact people about that time sensitive job.

Try give an example if you want to make a point, if you can think of one that is.

        • +3

          I'll give you two.

My old job, flight instructor. Now imagine you're flying slow and close to the ground while ATC is asking you to expedite. Try to reach inside the pocket to get the phone out requires you to either remove one hand off the control or the power whilst it is critical that you have both hands on the control and power at the same time. It's a lot easier to flick your eyes onto your wrist and get the information you need.

Or my cousin job as a dive instructor. Pretty hard to take the phone underwater whilst the dive computer is overkilled for beginner, a watch works just fine.

          • -7

@tomleonhart: If you were a flight instructor as you claim you would know that there would be a clock built in either a chronometer or other, whereas you would not need to check your phone at all letalone your watch.

Also, phones are waterproof these days, you can take a phone down with you multiple different ways, neither of the scenarios you described prohibit the use of a phone.

            • +7

@Willy Beamish: Tell me you know nothing about what you’re talking about WITHOUT telling me you know nothing about what you’re talking about.

    • Anywhere phones are prohibited. And looking at a watch is much less noticeable than pulling out a 6.6" phablet.

  • Worn a watch for decades, even with a smart phone.
    Seiko analog, V743-xxxx.
Sapphire crystal glass, day & date.
Bit old now, great movement, no probs with it.
Have 2 variants of the same model.

  • I tend to rotate between one of my G-Shocks most days. I also wear a titanium Eco-drive I picked up 11 years ago which is still running perfectly.

    Hair past a freckle….

    • with a mole catching up?

  • Seiko MarineMaster 300m Quartz

    Citizen ProMaster 200m Quartz

  • Apple Watch mainly for Apple Pay.

  • Gshock mud master gwg1000

  • $100 Invicta with an unbreakable Seiko movement that has been mistaken for a Rolex by idiots at least five times. So good I bought two.

    • It's an easy mistake to make considering Invicta copies some of Rolex's designs

      • More like blatant ripoff

    Casio F91W!

    • +2

Stylish. I have the bling model (A158W) in stainless steel.

      • +1

I have that one too, that's my 'dress' watch haha

Hate to give you the bad news but only the bracelet is SS, the case is plastic.

    • +3

      God tier

Rubber strap replacement costs more than a new watch so I recently NATO strapped mine!

  • I've worn a watch since I was 11 or 12. I had a Timex and it finally konked out after 35+ years. I was so heart broken. The watch had so many memories attached to it.

I replaced it with a similar looking one (Casio).

I only take it off when I have a shower. And I have to make sure I out on sunscreen in that area when I'm in the sun for a while. I have a permanent white area due to wearing a watch and it burns more easily than the rest of me!

    • +2

Did you ever find out what failed in the Timex? Did you have a watchmaker look at it?

  • Who needs a watch these days unless it is for heart rate monitoring

    • Who needs heart rate monitoring

  • galaxy watch 4 classic. one of the few smartwatches i could find that doesn't look like a toy and could still pass for a normal watch. old daily driver was a casio A159WGEA which is pretty much the F91W but in gold
