    I'd just use ozbargain instead

    • +6

Not to compete at all, rather it would help. 👍🏻

Clearance Club posts could be shared on OzBargain as well.

  • +8

What is the first rule of said club?

    • +10

      Beat yourself up.

      • +1

        This not so much…. 😆

    • +2

      🤣 this was honestly considered…..

      Make soap?

  • +12

Can you please supply what bargains you have otherwise please do not post SPAM with no ham.

      • So no bargains…..

        SPAM then.

    • Bacon and turkey spam are delicious

  • +42

If it just listed the clearances on your website I might use it!

Not interested in handing over my email before seeing the goods.

    • +1

fair enough, watch this space, that will be the case eventually.

  • +18

Agreed with the above, the random 'deals' posted on your site aren't enough to tempt me to hand over my details to sign up

    • +3

      fair enough, good feedback, thanks

  • +28

Is this for people who got kicked out of ozbargain platinum?

    • Pssht imagine being only platinum tier.

  • Maybe add to the pool…
Have you been to the gentlemen's club?

  • -3

What no hyperlink? Can't even post with a hyperlink!!!!!

    • +2

      Fixed that, my bad 🤦🏼‍♂️

  • +4

Not really a fan of going on a wild goose chase to try and find a clearance item that may or may not be in stock.

Is it crowdsourced listings? How are you proposing to monetise this venture?

    • -1

Stores will load clearance, the end game would be a retail version of Gumtree or Facebook Market Place for clearance.
For now, sign up and as we build the retail network we send email alerts with clearance deals.

      • +5

The saying is "Build it then they'll come" not "They'll come then you build it"

        • Build a club of interested customers and the retailers will come…… 😉

We have a chicken and egg situation here, have to see if customers are even interested before getting retailers onboard to post their clearance. At this stage, with sign up it's set and forget while we push hard to get retailers onboard.
If we can show interest to retailers they should have no objection to making their store specific clearance more discoverable.

          • +7

@Kain: The customers are the product. You have no product. OzBargain is not here to build your databases.

            • @Cheaplikethebird: Appreciate your feedback, thanks for taking the time to respond.

      • I will be interested to see how you can get the store staff to actually load the clearance on to your portal. Perhaps an API that will integrate with their price guns?

  • +1

If you're Matt, why is your user name Kain? Why is the first poll option the title of the poll?

    • Matt as a username was probably taken back in 2015…… Otherwise I promise I would have used it

  • +3

When I google "the clearance club" the first is clearanceclub.com.au which leads to a dead Shopify store.

Maybe you want to register "clearanceclub.com.au" as well if you can. Alot of people may get confused with the clearance club and clearance club to a dead link.

Looking at the website. I think it's a pretty good concept as a middleman website. You get businesses posting clearance items in one hub. I would use it, the other hurdle is getting enough businesses to post and customers to buy and go to your website.

    I like the idea.

It's similar to an app (forgot the name) for food businesses to post their end of day food at really cheap prices for those customers that want last minute food deals.

  • +6

    That website looks dodgy as

    • +1

good input, what makes it dodge you recon?

      • +11

There's no ABN listed, nor any address or easy way to contact anyone if anything goes wrong or if you have further questions (I see you can find an email address buried in the terms and conditions but this is very hidden).

There's no examples of prices without handing over your personal details first.

        • [email protected]

It's a platform for retailers so there is no address required.

          ABN is on it's way!

          • +1

@Kain: On it's way? You just sign up and get one! You'd have it in the time it takes to read this comment.

  • +7

That website gets a 10/10 on the irritation scale.

    • 🤣 thanks!

  • +3

The companies in the examples on the website don't seem to exist - at least I can't find them with Bing or Google.

So, for me, it's a "no", at least until I can see some real examples.

    • -1

The retailers will be posting the clearance items as they mark them down, we didn't want to use real company names until we have them onboard but those clearance deals are taken from Bunnings, BBQ Galore, Amart, Baby Bunting and Good Guys, just used generic logos.

      • +3

That's terribly misleading then. You have fake deals and companies next to text saying you have real clearance deals, and no fake deals.

I understand the chicken vs. egg problem, but you can't trick people into signing up due to fake deals on the front page.

        • apologies @BillyG687 totally not intending to mislead anyone.

I will have a message added to say we are in the process of going live.

Please feel free to unsubscribe if my response isn't good enough.

  • +2

nothing less than 15% 50% mark down 👍

    • +1

That is the plan, no fake clearance!

  • How long do I need to wait?

OzB seems a lot more convenient than getting retailers signing up to post their own deals.

    • different model but fair point.

  • +3

What's to stop a store posting up a dud deal such as mattresses at 15% off?

    • We will block deals with low discount

      • +2

        But that's hard to moderate.

What about brands such as Apple which rarely have 15% off? Would you block that?

        • +1

Do they even do clearance often?
Is that seen as clearance or just a "sale"?

          • +1

            @Kain: Ah my apologies.
I misunderstood the premise of your site.

I hope it goes well 👍

            • +1

@SnowDragon: Thank you, appreciate the feedback

      • +1

Automatically blocking significantly overpriced items like mattresses, jewellery and anything at Harvey Norman (except the occasional bargain like half price recent release switch games) is probably a good start, unless they're at least 90% off.

I can already predict it's going to go the way of places like COTD and little birdie where there's just too much crap to sift through. One of the reasons for this is that it's initiated and paid for by businesses. You can see the low effort/value posts by stores on the new deals page. If the items are genuinely discounted enough it's not going to be worth paying someone to list it on their website.

Clearance items usually have low stock availability, which is going to frustrate customers who repeatedly miss out on deals. When there are events with low stock of significantly discounted products it can lead to negativity towards the business.

If you can find another way to fund it and tighten the rules, maybe pull the data from the websites yourself and approve anything before it's listed it could be good, but it would be time consuming for you.

That's not to say it won't be successful with what you have planned, but it's probably not going to be particularly appealing to OzBargainers and you probably want an audience that's easier to please.

        • Agree with all these points, especially COTD with %50 random junk that no one wants

        • Great feedback appreciate it very much.

A great dream of ours would be enough members that retailers have a "dark store" for clearance posted on The Clearance Club.
That as well as the idea to rate the clearance deals to the top or bottom may make it rather powerful, but agreed it could go well or all go to crap. Time will tell.

  • I think if this actually starts to gain traction, the products you will promote will be something that's sat in JB for years etc and that no one would really buy, but hey I could be wrong

    • I think there will definitely be an element of that, but there is always people searching for all kinds of things, The Clearance Club would hopefully just make it more discoverable.

      • There's definitely people who shop around retail for clearance items, to just flip them on eBay. It's kind of its own economy in The States.

  • +4

Sounds good in principle and I wish you luck but I can see plenty of things that will make this really difficult to get off the ground… The first being: why would retailers go to any effort to keep your database updated on items they're probably already losing money on?

    • Totally agree, it's not an easy task at all!

But retailers should keep it updated as clearance takes up space that they could rather be putting new lines, they need to get it moved quickly and with it being unique it's often removed from their websites.

We hope to solve that… 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • Maybe you need some staff to do some casual runs every so often. And perhaps allow users (or "trusted users") to be able to post those clearance items, as long as they provide the full Barcode, Item Description, and Photo.

…at which point I find it hard to distinguish from OzBargain.
I mean we occasionally post -10% off Apple products, or GPUs above RRP just because they still seem to be of some value to the audience and buyers.

  • +2

    No fake deals!
nothing less than 15% mark down

Do you define the 15% markdown by accepting whatever the retailer claims or do you check?
Is it 15% off the RRP or 15% off it's most recent real price?

    • We will take it from the "before" price that would have to be loaded.
If in time that proves to be an issue we can start scraping history to see previous prices online similar to Little Birdie and factor that in.

Why is "Would you use The Clearance Club?" a poll option?

    • +2

Why is "Would you use The Clearance Club?" a poll option?

So that we can all click that one.
That should really help out the OP.

  • That was a fail on my part, was not sure where to put the question….. Now I can't change it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • If you are going to cross post to OzB no point joining with email address just check OzB each day.
    Great idea though :)

    • Yep, can totally do that, we will contribute here for sure as we're all hunting for a bargain at the end of the day!
You may still want to sign up one day as you will see unique clearance in your local area.

      Thanks for the positive feedback.

  • +2

Sounds like retail arbitrage assassin MarksMarkdowns part two….after he realised how expensive warehouse space was …

    • Haha, oh yeah, I remember that guy, what a t00L he was

"Stores post clearances" -> "You get notified. I can't think of anything worse. I don't want to give stores another channel to market to me. Browsing is what I'm interested in.

    • Yes, totally understand that, browsing will be a big component of this. We will have tools available shortly to manage email alerts. We hate spam just as much! Signing up can also just keep you in the loop of when we progress. 👍🏻

  • Farely random crap on front page. Don't seem to be able to see more without signing up which ain't happening based on front page.

    • Get your apprehension based on the example ads posted, appreciate the feedback.

  • Signed up, 10 min later still no email (checked the spam folder too)…

    • @samojed drop me a mail so I can investigate [email protected]

      • The email arrived eventually.

  • I think its a good idea. I will sign up for it.
Hopefully will be able to choose which category's (eg might only be interested in demo stock) clearance am interested in.
While I give you a +1 for making it a mobile friendly site from the get go - please consider changing the font weight - it just reads so "greyed out"

    • Thanks for the helpful feedback!

Yes, categories will be very much part of the email notification setup and browsing when it becomes available, "radius from you" will also be available i.e 50km/100km/250km etc.

      Mobile first! 😎

The font you speak of, is it in the footer?

      • Font all over the site. Eg : "marketplace is your one-stop online search platform for all the fantastic hidden clearance deals in your area and beyond. Join the club for early clearance notification" - for a first timer, I thought that was more of a modern version of strike-through-ed text - like something more readable is going to come up.

        • Do you mind sending me a screenshot of what you're seeing. [email protected]

  • Reminds me of that worlds biggest garage sale website/business/org/notanorg.

    • Not familiar, but I will check it out, thanks for the input.

  • +3

Got questions? email The Clearance Club Chairman person

    Sorry, but that is cringe.

The entire 'humour' of companies like Boost Juice and whatever is boring. Just keep is simple.

    • We will take that onboard, thanks for the feedback! 😂
      Got to be inclusive 🤷‍♂️

      • +4

        It's pointless and unnecessary?
        Got questions? Email us.

    • +2

Totally agree with this… Dunno if its an attempt to be funny or they're trying to make some kind of point (ie gender identity) - either way, get rid of it 😂

      • Ok - updated and humour removed. 😉

        • Haha good choice!

  • +2

I feel like 99% of clearance items aren't worth buying. Even when sales are 50%+ off RRP, so much of it isn't good value.

Now considering retail stores are going to be listing their clearance items through a middleman, i'm not conviced this will really yield any good results.

If you can negotiate cracker deals from sellers for your members for good clearance products, it might be worthwhile.
If you're just gonna be a advert/listing dumping ground for unwanted stock from retailers, i dont think you're providing any meaningful value to your subscribers.

    • Thanks for the feedback, we will take this onboard for sure.

  • I vote no, your website will invariably be filled with garbage.

On ozbargain the users decide what are genuine bargains, on your website stores will list the stock they haven't been able to sell in their own store - i.e. the stuff that is still overpriced.

  • +1

    Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Will have to see if your prediction comes true.

    Appreciate the input.

    • +1

The comment above has a point, allowing people to vote and/or report deals (that aren't good) and maybe using some kind of points system where businesses are rewarded for good deals will help weed out some of the crap. OzBargain has some of that, so crap "deals" don't usually make it to the first page. Also the comment about negotiating cheaper prices with the businesses. Maybe also having highlighted deals where there are good quantities and it is genuinely a good deal.

      • I was just thinking another good thing about OzBargain can be the comments. Then I started thinking, why can't they just post for free on OzBargain? If it's genuinely a good deal and they have enough stock, which i think is generally at least 10 items, but depends on what it is.

Something like price hipster that scrapes their website, but filter by minimum 50% off and have a similar voting/reporting function and comments as OzBargain. Maybe you could do some kind of commission deal with businesses that you have on your website if someone clicks through and purchases. There's nothing to stop people from going and clicking through their cashback site to buy instead, but a lot of people, especially non-Ozbargainers, will just click through your website.

      • Awesome feedback thanks, yes a voting system will definitely help with getting ads front and centre. We will also include a filter function for % discount etc.

        Appreciate the input.

  • Insufficient quantity?

  • The chainsaw has a bunnings clearance label on it, not a made up store like your advert.
    https://theclearanceclub.com.au/join/post1.png

    • Correct, I mentioned above that the images used are in fact real clearance from stores Amart, Bunnings, Baby Bunting, BBQ Galore, The Good Guys etc but we are not going to put their logos on without permission, so they are there for explanation purposes only.

In time that will be updated accordingly, we are in discussions at the moment.
