[iOS] Neo Noir - Dark Mode for Safari - Free (Was $0.99) @ Apple App Store

970

A really good extension for Safari makes otherwise really bright websites dark. Here's Amazon for example, light, dark

You can also manually enable, or disable for certain websites depending on how it appears, i.e with OzBargain dark mode already turned on, the extension makes it all look a little strange, so I have it disabled. Works well for Gmail.

Works on Mac Safari and iOS Safari.

This Safari extension offers a dark navigation mode in Safari. Neo Black night mode adds a beautiful theme to each page you visit. It is based on the Dark Reader project used by more than 4,000,000 users. Thus, the appearance of dark mode on each website has been carefully tested.

Was $0.99 according appsliced

Enjoy!

This app seems to be a knock-off of Noir, an app with a similar name, icon, and functionality.

EDIT: and yes, Noir was first. It’s version history goes back to Feb 2021, whereas this app starts at Sept 2021

I wonder what the differences between them are? One's free the other isn't I guess!

      • This one hasn't been updated for months. May not work properly on iOS16 or the newer phones. No reason for me to try since I already had Noir

From just looking at the AppStore listing, Noir (the 'original one'?) seems to only be for iPhones and iPads. The Neo Noir (the one you linked) is for iPhone, iPad and Macs.

Ohh I thought it was the original Noir that I have been using for months.

Do safari extensions work like some page modifying chrome ones where they have access to all data on the page?

If so it's a hard pass

Looks like it. I ent to try it out and asked for access to all my open tabs. Deleted the app already.

Yeah that sounds dodgy. Guess I will stick to Firefox on iOS . It has a night mode - not great but it does the job most of the time.

      • +1

Yeah it's not great, non-native modifications like this can also contribute to browser fingerprinting.

    • yes, when I tried to activate it I got a permission pop up message saying the extension needs to access data from 25 sites, modify the page and access browsing history(?)

    • Yea, I I do t use extensions at all for this very reason. Super simple way to give companies as much data as they want.

I use AdGuard and Hush safari extensions on my iphone. Both work really great. I barely see any ads, if at all, in safari. Including the bottom bar on Ozbargain. In Firefox, by comparison, with it in strict blocking, it still shows the container elements but the ad is empty.

I’m happy with Safari. I guess I hadn’t thought about the possibility of the plug-in hoovering up data. Is there any evidence or is this tin foil hat stuff?

      • AdGuard is great.

May as well roll with Safari on iOS, seeing as any app that can browse the internet is restricted to Apple's WebKit framework.

Not aware of any evidence against this app specifically - I guess it's just up to the individual if they feel comfortable saying yes to all those permissions.

I’d rather use open source extensions like dark reader since these kind of extensions are able to read all your web content including passwords etc

    • Does safari/apple allows open source extension? Do you get this from appstore?

This app has always been free since I downloaded it last year. I don’t think it was ever $0.99. I have been using it for over half of a year and it’s excellent! No in app purchase.

  • Works on ios 16 but has access to what you are browsing

  • How do you uninstall this? I've already removed via the icon but can still see the extension in Safari.

    • Did you remove the app from the home screen or delete the app?

I deleted and it no longer appears in the extensions

      • I must have removed instead. Thx

  • Just deleted, sites looks scummy

  • Just deleted asking for see everything including password and credit card
