So much hate for Qnap in here…

Both have online demos of their OS, go try and pick the one you like best.

    https://www.qnap.com/en-au/live-demo#qtsDemoBlock

    https://demo.synology.com/en-global/dsm

Qnap is more open (think android) Synology is prettier (think iOS). Because of how configurable qnap’s are, it is easy for the user to allow access to the internet and become vulnerable. If you don’t know what you are doing, don’t change default settings.

Also, although you ‘can’ run VM’s on these devices, unless you get a really high end model, it will run like garbage. If you want to run VM’s (or intensive docker containers), build a HP microserver or SFF setup.

      Synology is prettier

      That is subjective.

    • or run your own rig with xpanology …

end of the day, its a matter of tradeoff, there's never going to be a perfect product.

  • Thanks OP been eyeing NAS for a while so pulled the trigger with 4x10TB NAS HDDs

  • If you aren't running a Plex server having a NAS is overkill

  • other than using it for bit torrent and some backup cant really see a use for nas these days. Everything is in the cloud.

      • plex server

Lol at all the comments "don't buy this, just buy a florplesnort 3957zzp and hack it to run this thing I found on github, just google it bro it's so easy" some people just want to buy something that works out of the box.

I would never buy a florplesnort.
      Bleepzeebu are so much better.

  • anywhere to get 5% off ebay gift cards? Gift card exchange used to…

  • I was doing a bit of research before I pull the trigger on this and multiple threads on reddit suggested waiting for the next model which was due to drop sometime this year. Anyone with a bit more experience in this space got any opinion? I am not in a rush to get one but if its not gonna drop by the end of the year, might as well get this

    • Personally, I'm waiting to see what the new model is like.

    • yeah I notice too. Wait for black friday sale.

      • yup or another afterpay offer etc. lucky no need to fomo on a NAS

  • My DS418play is still going strong after 4+ years. Plex server, NVR, MariaDB, Mosquitto, Sonarr/Radarr/*Arr, reverse proxy, Frigate object detection. Hasn't missed a beat!

  • Now just a deal on WD plus 8tb… I noticed Mwave jacked the up $25 the other day so maybe sale on the way?
