  • Anyone have a solution for the two string, tilting type of blinds?

Wondering if it would work if I tied the cords together

    • For some models you can take them apart and replace the cord with the beaded string.

    • Is the 2nd string in a loop as well? Maybe two units?

    • +1

I tried it on mine and no dice, as the two strings don't move at a constant tension and as soon as there is slack the machine can't pull it

Hopefully another deal for the aqara E1 soon

    • How does this cheaper Kogan unit compare to the more expensive Aqara E1?

      • +1

Aqara uses Zigbee instead so need a hub. Zigbee should last longer than wifi on battery as lower power. How the motors etc compare I'm not sure. I've only got 1 Aqara E1 as a test, want to get several more!

        • noticed they are back to $99.99 on ebay with 8% code

      • +2

Also this one runs on AC power outlet, while the E1 got battery

  • Anyone got these working with Home Assistant?

    • +1

Assuming it is using SmarterHomeApp, then it is basically Tuya white label products, then if it is Tuya, then LocalTuya can be setup with HA without too much hassle.

    • +1

i have these working via the Tuya cloud integration. havnt setup LocalTuya yet but its definitely an option

      • +2

I have got these working through LocaTuya but only the core functions are supported.

        • Can you please specify what works and what doesnt with HA?

          • +1

@Pest85: It can control the motor in opening and closing the blind. Nothing more. Mu understanding is you can have a timer in the Kogan app, but that can be easily handled by a Home Assistant automation.

    • +2

Yes, I have two of these and have them both working with Google Home Assistant.
The default smart app for these is 'Tuya Smart' or 'Smart Life'.
Once you have their initial setup done you then connect Tuya/Smart-Life via Linked Services in Google Home Assistant and add them to their relevant rooms.
      Then you can go:
"Hey Google, open/close (All the, the Bedroom, the Living Room) blinds"
"Hey Google, Open the blinds 50/60/70/etc percent" Google tends to disagree with what Open and Close mean in some circumstances.. so when you say "Open the blinds 80%" it will sometimes open it 20% instead, not a deal breaker though.
You can set schedules in Tuya/Smart or Google Home assistant. So I have my living room blinds open 100% at Sunrise and close at Sunset.
The bedroom blinds I have open just 10% early in the morning to just let a little bit of light bleed in to wake me up, then I have them fully open up at the time that I leave for work.

      • +3

Just a heads up that Google Home is not Home Assistant

        • +3

Oh right! The open source Home Assistant! Oops! Well hopefully I helped someone. :-)

    • These appear to be the same as the common YH002 but I could be wrong. If they are the same, they can be flashed to tasmota or esphome which is (in my opinion) infinitely better than localtuya. Then, they work perfectly with home assistant, I have 6 of them and have been extremely happy with them. However I did have to manually flash them (open them up and use FTDI adapter to flash the esp chip direct), not hard but does take a bit of time and isn't plug and play like localtuya (but unlike localtuya, is 100% reliable, 100% of features are supported and 0% tuya firmware calling home to china every 30 seconds)

  • This is a good price, these have gone way up (on AliExpress) since COVID

  • +3

I have a couple of these and they work great. I've never had a connection issue and have enough torque to roll heavy 3m wide blinds.

  • +1

Have a few of these working well with the Tuya cloud integration in Home Assistant, need to work on Local Tuya.

At this price I will pick up a few more to do the "less essential" blinds :) Thanks OP.

  • can this be attached with adhesive instead of screws?

    • Yes, I have a couple running with the 3m double-sided tape supplied with the kits.

    • Yes it comes with 3M adhesive tapes which I use.
Not sure if it's because of the adhesive or the way it's set up with our blinds but one of the adhesives started failing and the motor started becoming loose. Can always get new adhesive tapes I guess

  • +1

Do these drivers need to be plugged into a power source at all times?

    • +1

Based on the product pictures it needs to be connected to power. I guess depending on the power requirements it may be possible to connect it to a powerbank with the right cable?

    • Biggest drawback… Can't wait for wireless power delivery

      • They exist, check those with battery and solar panels.

    • Yes it does

  • Nice unit. I've been using one for over a year to open a 5m run of vertical blinds (very heavy) and it does it with ease.

The only downside is the noise, but that is common to all budget brands.

  • Are these battery or mains power? Description and reviews seem to not agree on this.

    • I believe this is mains powered, not battery.

    • Was trying to figure this out too. This (truncated) review on Kogan’s site confirms it is indeed mains powered:

When purchased i thought the unit had an internal battery that would be charged. Images of the product does not clearly show nor product description states that the power cord is required to be inserted to operate . Lucky the blind positions have power close by and cable can be tucked away so they are not too visible.

  • would the motor stop when the blind is fully opened / closed? I heard some reports where the motor keeps running until the stop button is pressed.

    • +1

I believe you can set a minimum and maximum end points, provided you use a chain link (rather than string/rope) as it counts the number of rotations. Rope can move and slip through the links.

      • Yes you can set minimum and maximum, so it will stop automatically when it reaches those points.

  • +1
    • :(

i have the string rope type on my blinds.

  • Need something for shutters

  • Has a double take on this one. Irresponsible to blind drivers, likely to cause an accident…

  • how to hide the power adapter and electrical cable?

    • Get a battery version like the Aqara E1? :)

  • This is a great price, I have a few of these which I bought for a lot more $. They were out of stock for a while too.

They have been very good here, I have a few set up to gradually open at different percentages throughout the morning as the sun goes up so it's not too bright, and then close after dark.

The only time I've had issues is after I set up a 'Scene' on the app which I linked to Google Home to open two different blinds at the same time….but one was open 90% and one was 50% at the time, so triggering the scene confused the system and one blind started running the other direction and closed beyond the maximum point. But I reset it and it's been fine since.

    • Yeah, I have the same direction issue

  • I have 3 of them. They were great at the beginning but they have an issue: device forgets if blinds are in opened or closed state.
Blinds are open but close function doesn't work because it thinks it closed already. This memory issue happens once a month maybe, not sure why.
It is annoying because you have to remove device and close blinds manually.

  • Ok for renting?
