Officially it was used to read news. Inofficially most of the "news" had files attached to them and that is how people downloaded illegal contact ages ago. SO i have heard, i would have never done that myself.

  • Signed up but, realistically, understanding this is in the too much time required basket. Just gunna sell my synology which i never got around to using

All this and radarr and sonarr etc.. Too much

  • Can someone tell me what this is? Googled but couldn’t understand.

    • many ppl asked the same see above….

      • Maybe it’s me this time, went through the comments but I still don’t know what this is. Feeling all these comments are by people who already know what this is.

        Can you eli5 please?

Think of it like torrents, where you can download software, movies, games etc. Except you can download them quicker, not having to wait for seeders and more secure.

To download you will need to pay a Usenet provider. It's not free. Some places have unlimited downloads per month or you can buy 1tb blocks quite cheap. I have been using these guys for years. https://newsgroupdirect.com

It's a two step process and a bit of fiddling around to set it up. Hope this kind of explained it.

@pufffdragon: Dude. What is the 1st rule of NZBClub?

          • @pufffdragon: Ok thanks. Why are these called news readers when you can download software, movies, games etc?

            • +2

@ilovefullprice: Cats out of the bag so I’ll guess I’ll give you something to follow up on, because to be honest, the concept is easy… but if you don’t do your research, you will get nowhere in setting up a seedbox. Search up on NZBGet, Sonarr and Radarr. Those 3 words in Google will tell you everything you need to know. Not being rude, but if that doesn’t help you, it won’t be worth your time. Gods speed!

              • @[Deactivated]: Thanks! I think I am getting the gist on this.

How is this then different to IPFS?

                • +1

@ilovefullprice: More secure. More reliable. Sonarr and Radarr is fully automated and you can also use torrents also, if you wish. You don’t need Usenet access but I think it’s better. Basically the experience is very smooth if setup correctly. Also research a program called Overseerr Lookup Deluge as well for torrents. You gotta put in the work and research, but well worth it if you do. I’ve already said too much :P. Good luck.

So getting this free thing (lifetime license) from this thread is not enough to download stuffs?

            • +1

@CyberMurning: No, you need more unfortunately. And you will have to pay to get any downloads. Stick to torrents if you want free.

Well, I wasn't expecting an answer 18 months later.

  • News made their ways into social media platforms like facebook. Unlucky, facebook stopped paying them anymore xD

Damn, i had a 57kbps internet connection and only 33.6kbps modem and not enough pocket money to upgrade.

    • That is what we grew up and went to uni, to get access to the very high speed Internet for free

Used to use Newsleecher back in the days. Made the switch to torrents permanently as too many incomplete RARs even though retention policy of the provider was very high.

Now running torrent leech and basically maxing out my 1Gbit connection on most torrents.

    • Hi, any chance to get in invite to torrent leech please? TA

      • I only have 10 invites for what.cd

        • RIP :(

    • is it better than torrentday?

  • iOS app?

  • This is old news!😂😂

  • best browser is still lynx… and BBS on 300bps where the best. Used to be newsgroups where the best forums now it's just for nzbs.

    • .lusers was the best one in Australia

    • +1

Only way I could access the internet in the early 90s was to connect to a BBS that had a door program to connect to the internet, which was text based. Lynx, gopher, ftp etc into various universities around the world for files, and usenet for discussion forums.

My local bbs then became an ISP later on, offering ADSL. A long way from 300 baud modems, which is where I started too.

      • that's how I started too, although, after a bit, I got a shell account via one the unis here, who had a tech business, with much faster links than my old BBS, then, they say, the rest is history….

people upvoting this for the nostalgia, moreso than this being a good deal.

go get sabnzbd for free, [or nzbget (which was forked and is being developed again last i checked) for free]. they're waayyyy better. i have no idea if Newsbin even integrates with the starr apps (radarr/sonarr etc), but sabnzbd+nzbget definitely do.

    • Might give sabnzbd a go. Have used Newsbin for ever and a day without any persistent issues but do love to try new things.

  • The year is 2024,the AI robot is on the market and still have people use this put "news in bins"?
