Bought a Lemon - BMW X3 with Engine Oil Leak

Hi folks, need a genuine suggestion here.

Bought a BMW X3 2006 from a private seller who offered a RWC but I didn’t check the date. Which was expired on 4/08/2022. Purchase date - 31/09/2022. Cost - $11500 all cash.

Now the engine is leaking and costing me more than $7000 to fix. I got the RWC from the local mechanic with the engine oil leak fix. But it’s not a simple fix.

Car is already registered on my name with the current RWC spent $1100 for RWC. I’m sure the seller sold me a lemon.
But there was only one thing in my mind before making purchase is that the road worthy was passed in last month then it won't take much to get the new RWC.

So now, can I go to the last RWC guy and file a case against him? Not sure what to do? Or take it as a lesson and move on?

Comments

    • so many comments actually say they also got bitten by the bmw/euro car monster

  • Keep the car, get a large can of oil and pipe it straight into the engine via a pump calibrated to the accelerator. Regularly de-grease the engine and undercarriage. Might be a good idea to carry a bag of sand for when you stop to fill up. All cheaper than $7000.

    And Bob's your uncle.

    • Pink slip will fail due to oil leaks…causing problem with rego going forward.

  • Most RWCs will overlook an oil leak as they can be transient.
There is no way to prove that the oil leak was there or not at the time of the previous RWC inspection (see above).
Probably best to just find a better price and move on.

I have 2 cars. One is a brand new Corolla Hybrid and the other is a 20 year old Nissan.
The Nissan leaks oil because it's 20 years old.

  • Move on to your next troll post after driving your imaginary 2006 X3 off the imaginary cliff.

  • LOL, what were you thinking!! I love euro cars but never buy used after 3-4 years. After 10 years, they start to become problematic, usually good till then though.

  • just move on, happened to me once. bought a 5 yo car and was too late to realise the rwc was issued by a wreckers company. apparently, they are allowed to issue it.

Trying to impress overseas friends and relatives has gone wrong for "Rahul Chavan'

      • But he can still impress them with photos and videos though so serves the purpose:)

how many KM's on the clock ? if its above 150k then I wouldnt be surprised.

$7k for an oil leak seems excessive unless its an engine out job. I would get the workshop manual and DIY but thats just me.

  • Does "when life gives you lemon, make lemonade" work in this context?

Surprised how much effort the mod went out of their way to basically proof read and correct OP's grammar throughout as per the revision.

    Kudos to them.

    • Grammerly :P

Just here for the comments… more pop corn please

  • I usually stop and stare when i see a P plater driving a 2005 c class. I might even take their photograph, such is my admiration, for such wealth i have not yet tasted.

  • Why didn't you do an independent inspection on the car before purchasing?
Would have been a couple of hundred dollars rather than $7000.

    • In hindsight, he now regerted.

it is like not taking car insurance until accident happens

      • +1

        Yep.
I went to a smaller dealer, the car seemed cheap, got a machanic to come out and do an independent inspection of the car.
He calls me mid inspection and says "run, the engine is leaking oil, I would strongly recommend not getting the car". It was good knowing that I dodged a bullet, even though I spent a bit of cash and didn't get anything material back from it.

Been there, done that. 2005 120i. I will never own a BMW again after that saga. Thousands in repairs, then another thing would go wrong, then another, then another. Leaking from everywhere and as soon as you fix one leak, that increases pressure, meaning other areas with failing seals leak more.

    Used BMW, never. Seriously.,

    • or merc, VW, audi etc

    • The 4cyl BMW engines are terrible, the 130i is a nice car.

  • Bought a Lemon

Great, now you can make lemonade!

  • heres how you save $7k… for the short term

    • For the short term whilst you try and sell it!

Whole bottle in, run it, then degrease and pressure wash the underside, then take it to a dealership and trade it in on something.

To be honest get a second job which pays well , this is going to be an ongoing expense for you. Why the hell you buy 16yo European car and complain , 2min google would have warned you not to buy . Sorry it's harsh but it's reality. Just offload the car to another looser and buy some newer model Japanese or Korean car , take out a loan if you can , paying interest would still be much cheaper than maintaining BMW

  • Have a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up0vhkTRrb0 to self diagnose if you can and see if you can just fix it yourself or get a cheaper mechanic to do it

    Bikies

  • Only works when if you're a like uni student and it's your first car. I hope you are still young or else buying a 16 year old car is just stupid.

    • Buying a 16 year old BMW car for $11500 is stupid.
If you can buy a 16 year old Toyota for $3000, Its not too bad.

Although my 17 year Toyota Camry is also leaking oil.17 year old gaskets are 17 year old gaskets and aussie labour charges are too much.Got a quote of $700 for changing the gasket.

But everything else is fine and it just does train station duties nowadays as i have a new Rav4 hybrid as our main car.

      • -1

ditto rav4… because nothing goes wrong, have bitch about something else now

        • So do you have a new rav4 hybrid? Last time I heard, Toyotas had a few recalls and Toyotas parts are cheaper than European parts fyi.

OP I think there is an error in your title, please fix to, "Bought a Lemon - BMW"

Username checks out. I just need my warm food delivered in a drivable car and not some old bmw suv.

OP logged in a few hours ago!

  • Really do not understand why anyone would buy a BMW that old anyway.Nothing but trouble & heartache.Badge snobbery is the only thing I can think of.

  • Where's the mods obviously a troll account, maybe op left to return to his home planet

  • Problem is you bought a BMW
