    What's a Gan Charger?

    • +6

      A charger for your gans

    • +9

Gallium Nitride. It's a semiconductor material. Most older devices use silicon.

Long story short is that GaN is more efficient so allows for smaller devices with greater power output.

      • Thankyou

        • A big part is also cooler. More efficient means less energy lost as heat. So ideally safer and more stable operation.

          • @incipient: These still get reasonably warm when powering a laptop, but no complaints. Suspect the physical smaller size offsets the higher efficiency.

            • @[Deactivated]: Exactly. Main reason for consumer electronics is that it's easier to market a smaller size than cooler function.

In higher end devices for enterprise use cases, the efficiency affecting heat generation is more marketable because it likely means reduction in cooling required meaning less money spent on electricity long term to keep components cool enough to run at full capacity/potential.

  • So this says compatible with a bunch of apple products. Is it not fully compatible with non apple products?

    • Fine as long as your device supports USB PD.

    • This has PD and also PPS, so it can super fast charge your Samsung phones.

  • Does this charger come with USB-C to C cable?

    • +1

      no

  • Review 3/5 stars is concerning

    • 7 reviews on Amazon AU.

4.5 with 131 reviews on Amazon US.

      • 7 means not many Aussie interested in this charger? Also 2 of 5 reviews show the charger stopped working soon after purchase. Yea nah…

        • +1

Most of the time it is too expensive.

I’ve had one since Jan and travelled interstate with it a lot, and powered 2 laptops from it at the same time without issue. (Albeit at 60w+30w).

One of the nice things about this style of charger is I also bought a few different lengths of IEC C7 cables so I can have this on a desk/table even 5m from power or swap one for another countries cable if I take it overseas.

I’d take the total 2 reviews that are less than 5 stars with a grain of salt. People don’t generally leave reviews when things work.

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks.
How is the actually size of this charger?
On their homepage I could see this mentioned.
            3.75 x 2.5 x 1.25 inches, 11.2 oz (317g)
It seems too big. The 60W charger from Anker is only 160g. The 140W charger from Apple is 3.78x2.95x1.1 inches, 8oz (277g)

@Averell: I don’t have any reason to think their specs are inaccurate. It’s going to be bigger/heavier than a 60w GAN charger. If you know you only need 60w and you’re traveling light you might prefer the Anker. I’ve used this to charge 2 laptops and phone, so you get more for the weight, but there’s more weight total. It feels very solid. I also recently got the 165w version which is larger again to the point I definitely wouldn’t use it for (air) travel.

The 100w is probably at the upper size limit of what I’d use for travel, it’s just being able to place it anywhere and use smaller cables for the devices I prefer when traveling as the power points might be on the other side of the room and so this saves bringing an extension lead (when coupled with a longer IEC C7 cable for 5m+, or the shorter included one is probably fine for most people).

              • @[Deactivated]: Thanks.
The Anker 60w fits my needs in term of ports and wattage, however it comes with a fixed prongs, which is very inconvenient when travelling abroad

  • how's the quality of these Satechi chargers compared to Anker's?
    Thanks

    • +3

I own this charger and another 2x Satechi chargers. They're high quality. As good (if not better) than Anker's.

      • +3

They feel higher quality material wise than the (admittedly older) Ankers I own, but both brands have had 100% reliability for me so can’t complain about either. I prefer some of the port options here and that it uses an IEC C7 cable vs some of the newer Anker options.

The pair of BlitzWolf ones I had were trash, (dropped out and electrical noise I could hear on my headphones).

    • THey're very decent and the power rating is very close to the mark. WHereas my samsung 65W charger doesn't even do 65W when it says the main rail does it.

  • +1

I have 4 of these (in various rooms). They’re brilliant. Recently upgraded to the 4 usb-c port one for travelling. Great price

  • Thoughts on this vs Zendure SuperPort? I have the later and like it, but I find the power cable is unnecessarily long

    • I also have two superports. The Satechi I have (165w) feels like it is better quality.

This also uses a figure 8 cable. You could just buy a shorter one if that is your issue.

  • How is Satechi compared with Baseus GAN charger?
The Basues has the 100W option now, has more ports. There is model with the AC port as well, but I think it is the 65W only.

    • Just at a glance I personally prefer the IEC C7 (removable) lead on the Satechi vs the fixed one on the Baseus. Unless you're charging a lot of lower powered devices you tend to run out of power before ports.

    • This is a locally sold model. This will include a compliant Australian plug. IEC-C7 means you can swap it easily if travelling overseas.

Baseus has a Chinese plug which is basically an Australian plug but upside down with no insulation on the pins.

  • This Satechi 100W has "5v2 4A" for its usb A port, and the 106W has "2.4A max" for its two usb A ports. Can someone explain this to me…?
