Got one of these after really high humidity at the start of the year cause mould (in QLD). It removes quite a of water from the air when it’s actively raining outside (maybe 10l/day). The unit is not quite and when the unit starts and stops it’s not subtle, it makes quite a bit of noise and physically moves when the compressor kicks in. Note energy consumption is between 300w and 350w when the compressor is running.

I wonder if using the reverse air conditioner on dry mode is fine works well for shower humidity.

      • Thats what I use, but these type of units are probably more energy efficient

Aircon in dry mode does the job, but consume more power and not so efficient as Dehumidifier.

        • +1

Sadly aircon works differently from dehumidifier

        • what about this? It says it has dehumidifier function too…would it be still less efficient?
Dimplex DCP7W 2kw Portable Air Conditioner with Dehumidifier

      • feel like not as much comes out through the dry mode. turn it on every night for 2 hours (smart home automations) but still getting stupidly high humidity levels… doesn't seem to drop the humidity levels whilst its on (stuck on 60% overnight…). When I had one these in a past home, it seemed to really get it down to 50% on rainy days.

If you have a good guys commercial account this is $348

  • I have the non connect model of this and works well. Amazing how much water it removes overnight. As mentioned above it is quite noisy but can act as white noise (although the compressor kicking in isn’t subtle)

Note - this looks like a compressor type which work best for warm humidity. For cool humidity (winter in the south) use a desiccant type.

    • Nerver heard of this. So melbourne should use desiccant?

      • For winter (cold use) - yes. If you read on sites of companies that make them they will tell you this.

I'm in Tassie - today is light rain, but very high humidity (95%). Not particularly cold (15 outside), but can feel it is due to the high humidity. I have my dehumidifier (DH) on and it's 19 and 60% inside (aiming for 50%). Feels fine. Even does this on really cold days. I use my split air con maybe 1 hour a day, then the DH the rest of the time (if it's cold AND humid). This is enough to keep my 2 modest sized rooms cosy as the DH produces a few hundred watts heat as it works.

A compressor type DH will struggle in cold temperatures. One reason using your split air con on Dry isn't very good at dehumidifying.

Ionmax or Ausclimate are very good. Pretty poor that Breville don't state which type theirs are.

        • If my house is heated in winter above 20 degrees wouldn't compressor be better?

          • @Jklaro: That's about the border line for picking between the two types. I will say if you get the house to a temperature with the heater, you might be able to maintain it with just the desiccant dehumidifier, because they produce a few hundred watts to work.

Maybe it depends what time of year you find humidity a problem. Winter get desiccant. Summer get compressor.

You don't want to be using a desiccant one in summer because it adds heat.

  • don't buy this if u are in sydney
