Remarkable 2 Tablet $499, Refurb $469 (+10% Discount via Referral) + 1 year free Connect Plan (Worth $4.99/mo) @ ReMarkable

I saw a news article recently that remarkable had sold over 1,000,000 devices which is pretty good for a niche product. Link: https://www.e-ink-info.com/remarkable-sold-over-million-e-in…). And they have also recently reduced the price and the subscription plan price.

It's basically a tablet for taking notes - if you have taken notes with an iPad and then try a device like this, you will never go back. It really is much more like writing in a book - not like an iPad with a slippery bright screen that turns off after 60 seconds of no activity.

They offer a 100 day free trial.

I use mine primarily for three purposes:
1. A diary (planner) - I used to use a paper diary and it's has many benefits over that. But it wouldn't be suitable to replace a diary if you use an electronic calendar.
2. Taking notes at two monthly meetings that I attend. I used to take notes by hand in a book. But then later, I would never be able to find the book when I wanted it. With the remarkable, it all saves in the cloud so I can check it on my phone or computer at any time. And apart from being much nicer to write with than an iPad, it doesn't have a bright screen to distract others.
3. Signing documents - rather than print them out, I sign them on the remarkable and email them away. The pen/screen is paper like enough to look like my hand written signature.

Is this a marketing pitch? Why is the amount of units sold in the title?

    • +1

If you read my description, I mention why. And yes I am a big fan :)

    • +5

      Exactly. Possible sockpuppet?

      • +2

I doubt it but… cmon just look at all of the other posts and follow suit instead of trying to market it in the title lol

        • +1

I removed the units sold from the title. You make a point that most titles don't try to market the product. It would be a better title for the forums.

Get a paperlike screen protector for your ipad. Does the job

    • +2

It would make writing on it nicer. But it couldn't make it an e-ink device (lighter, better battery, non turning off screen, no distractions etc).

      • Sure but ipad can do at least 20 more things than this lighter crap can. not a fan. had version-1 and we replaced all ours with iPad n pencils in the office, was still cheaper. it used to be like $699 + $80-150 for case + pen etc. Hard to justify these amounts. These guys have reduced price as they arent selling many.

    • Which we can get the paper like screen protector? Thank you.

Because Kindle Scribe is on preorder?

    • -3

The Kindle Scribe looks like it could potentially be better. Maybe that is why Remarkable is reducing the price. I am just amazed with the Remarkable. But I got in over a year ago. I'm not up to date with recent developments from competitors. The Kindle Scribe looks good because it doesn't run Android/iOS. That's another big benefit of the remarkable. You only use it for productive work without distractions.

      • -2

So, buy a separate $400++ device because you lack discipline to stay focused on the task at hand?

        • +1

I like having separate devices for different things. Otherwise I would have to keep changing notification settings etc between work times and break times etc.

          • +2

            @onceupon8: It's literally swipe up & tap a button…

            • +1

@The Judge: That's exactly what I was thinking, another device to carry around and charge where as a tablet with a pen and keyboard is much more versatile. Tablet with a keyboard and pen or simply a laptop (i have a touch screen laptop with pen but i never use the touch screen).

Yet I'm still curious and intrigued with this device… looks cool and I somehow like the idea of using it. Probably not for that price though.

      • It seems like the Scribe has a backlight… i think… that seems to be the only benefit.
Aside from that the scribe is heavier and bigger, with a huge left side. Remarkable for me.

  • I’d be tempted if it had the option to use colours also. Looks cool though!

    Tips for new players:

    • Understand that this is a niche product in a niche category.
    • Remarkable customer support is about as fun to deal with as gastro.
    • Remarkable connect plan is coming down in price after the company was lambasted for putting existing features behind a paywall.
    • If you want a e-ink tablet with full play store access - go with Boox.
    • If you want the best value, roadmap and customer support - go Supernote.
    • If you want a cheap entry into e-ink land try Mobiscribe Origin or eBay lots of people buy e-ink without knowing what it is and end up selling them barely used.
    • If you are a digital artist - remarkable will probably still be the best choice for you.
    • If you have too much time and want in depth reviews and information - mydeepguide on YouTube is the benchmark.

Like that bookmark link, just below?

        • firefox doesn't work for some reasons, switching to chrome works!

    • Great list of suggestions - thanks.

Can any of these be configured to only sync to a private data source (e.g. a home NAS), for better privacy?

    • +1

      Good summary.
I have the Boox Note Air 2 Plus for its Android functionality, and easy integration with other apps and work programs.
A colleague has the reMarkable 2, great product design, but without the yearly subscription, its functionality is very limited. So it may be cheaper at the start, but $60 a year for continued function adds up quickly.
Also, it's an additional cost for the pen and folio case which you will need so the total is still $700-$800 depending on what you choose.

    • +1

      Good one. I'll check mobiscribe

  • Thanks OP! Kindle scribe pre-ordered (not sure how I missed that but thanks OzB comments)

      Why not wait for reviews?

Remarkable 2 owner here aswell! Been using it for a whole year now basically every day and just thought it might be useful to share my experiences for new buyers.

Firstly I've mainly been using it for studying (maths work) and practice exams. Anyways here are some things you should know:
*The remarkable is very responsive in writing, however erasing is slower (though I do not have the pro pen)
*The pen is quite inaccurate around the edges making the actual writable area slightly smaller
*The pen nib is quite soft compared to other styluses meaning you will likely need to change it every 2 months if you are using it daily
*Page swiping is usually a hit or miss and it gets slightly annoying at times
*Sometimes whilst writing the screen glitches out and thinks the hand that's resting on the tablet is trying to zoom in.
*Power button is placed at top of tablet and can easily get pressed
*Pen sensitivity is alright but I would suggest using fineliner mode (no pressure) to write as softly as possible to reduce nib wear
*Pen tilt is usually not noticable but sometimes is off by a few milimeters (hard time joining two lines)
*The subscription is nice to have but definitely not necessary
*USB transfer of files is much better than the wifi sync

    • What is your overall perspective? Are you happy with your purchase? Do you or have you owned any other tablets, and if so was this worth buying as an additional device?

      • +1

I think overall it worked well for me, however I can not really compare to other tablets as this was the only one I've had unless you count a touchscreen laptop aswell. I think given the price point (~$600) I was neither super happy nor disappointed with the purchase it kinda did what I expected it to do.

If you are able to integrate the device into your everyday life it might be worth but I think it's got quite a niche use case.

    • +1

Interesting, i cant say ive had your power button issue or ever had it zoom with a hand on the screen. I use the staedtler pens, both versions, and have found them to work well and agree that fineliner is the easier pen selection.

  • Come on kobo make one similar but cheaper.

    I dont like closed system

    • It's been out for a while - Kobo Elipsa.

      • +1

I returned the Kobo - It's just terrible.

  • +1

I have owned one of these in the past and it absolutely sucked. Very limited and hugely overpriced. Would stick with an iPad + paperlike screen protector everyday of the week.

  • Has the deal expired? I follow the link and see $499 for the machine + cost for the marker + cost for folio. Nearly $1000 total.

    • Don't buy the folio, it's the worst deal possible. Just buy a case on Amazon for $30

  • This tech has the potential to go places. If they can develop NFC tech and add in data, you could potentially use this display to push a written meeting date to people's calendars, shoot someone an appointment summary pdf, instantly send a Zoom client/colleague a drawn pdf blueprint so they can add to it and send it back….

Shit , I could see myself using a pad like this every day…

Thanks for posting this deal - I'm gonna keep this product in mind for the future

  • I wish I could buy thin from Amazon to return it if I don;t like it. I will wait for the scribe

  • Boss has one of these, looks smick. I’d get one but it’s a little early for me to copy cat.
Would like to think it would improve my note taking

  • +1

I have a "supernote" for work and for me, in terms of functionality is above all other eink devices (maybe lower than boox) but it has the lowest latency for writing. They are super transparent as opposed to the things i heard from remarkable and the subscription plan was also a dealbreaker for me.

One of the traps are also how they market, it may seem cheap but good luck purchasing the pen that require infinite nib swaps (like printer cartridges) and accessories, which would cost almost double what you expected.

  • +2

Seriously, $120-200 for a stylus and $200-300 for a cover?

  • +7

These guys still have not learnt that most people doesn't want to pay them for the "privilege" of accessing their cloud data. Yes, this deal waves the monthly fee associated with Cloud access, but 12 months comes and goes very quickly. There's been dozens of complaints from users online that basically has the same issue: we are already paying subscription fees for cloud storage. Remarkable charges monthly fees to access these documents through their API. Honestly, should be a free service - NOT a monthly subscription, regardless of the "free" period.

  • +1

That’s a lot of notepads you could buy for the same price. And a fancy pen.
