YouTube Premium Plan Price Increase

Been enjoying YouTube premium courtesy of our Argentinian neighbours but just received notification of a price increase. Inflation? Or more like hyperinflation…

We will be updating your YouTube Premium family plan price starting 21 November 2022
Hi xxx,

We created YouTube Premium to provide an uninterrupted YouTube experience, so that you can get closer to the videos, creators and music artists that you love. To continue delivering great service and features, we will be increasing your Premium family plan price from ARS 179.00/month to ARS 699.00/month.

That’s almost a fourfold increase… although it’s still pretty reasonable in comparison to Aus pricing.

Just wondering if they are increasing pricing in other regions too?

Beat me to posting the exact same question.

If there's another country to hop to, that'd be great

  • Got the same message, it’s a pretty big jump from sub $2 to $7.

    vanced

    • +13

Why down posts ? Vanced still working really good for me .

      • +15

probably because they are paying for premium while im paying 0 for the same thing ;)

        • +2

is there Vanced for Android TV? if, not, I have no use for Vanced

          • +10

@liongalahad: Yeah, there's SmartTubeNext. It has no ads, SponsorBlock, quality selection, AFR, cast support, etc.
Been working pretty great for me

            • +2

@qwertimus: does it connect to the youtube account? so you have all your subscription, history etc

          • +5

            @insane: Lol

            iM a cReAtOoOoR

This is ozb not pay the youtuber

Make sure to click like and subscribe for more ozb content comments

          • +1

@insane: Youtube was better before "Youtube creators". So its actually in my best interest to block your ads and your sponsors.

            • @samfisher5986: Youtube was better before people started putting video's up onto it? Righto

              • @insane: Are you 12 years old? Youtube has been around for a while.

              • +1

@insane: If your business model surviving depends on 50 ozb users, then i have to say that's a pretty skinny margin you are running there, buddy.

tell you what.. i'm feeling generous. Tell me your channel name, i'll view 10 of your video creations today just like that.. ads and all… just for you

          • @insane: username checks out

      • +4

Vanced stopped working for me, but Revanced has been working just fine. Different devs/team I believe, but practically the same thing.

        • Thanks, never heard of revanced, but just cancelled and will try this now

        • +2

Yeah the latest Vanced isn't working properly. Google keeps changing things on their end, breaking compatibility, with certain Ads coming through, crashes, and notifications not being pushed.

    • +1

Cheap premium is better/supported for mobile and chromecast, youtube on TV.

    • +1

Buggy mate and it is really going to break soon.

  • +1

Does India have the same price increase?
Or is there another cheaper country?

  • +25

It quite obvious that they don't care about the rising cost of life here in Argentina /s

It is a big jump and we need to check other regions too. I am not against moving to Turkey or India to get cheaper Youtube Premium.

    • Agreed. Lets see if there are any changes to other regions as well.

    • +2

Why the need to dock somewhere at all landlubber?

  • +1

welp, the $1 YT premium was fun while it lasted :')

  • +2

    119 to 389 ARS (+227% increase!)
    That's a huge leap.

    • Single plan went up too?

      • Yeah, just got the email for single plan, it went up too.

  • It seems to be just the Family plans at this stage, US goes $17.99 per month to $22.99, UK £17.99 per month to £19.99 per month. Canada and Mexico too, no idea about Aus.

    • nope, I am on the single plan.

" To continue delivering great service and features, we will be increasing your Premium price from ARS 119.00/month to ARS 389.00/month."

still reasonable considering the AUS price, but I was shocked at the gigantic jump in price!

  • +1

Yep I got the same email - how ridiculous. 391% increase which is crazy - have they realised that most of their subscribers are from places other than Argentina?

Will consider cancelling at this price but I have gotten used to no annoying ads. Trouble is a lot of people are putting ads in their videos to get around this.

    • +1

A price increase was always going to be inevitable. Most phones have 4K now so everyone is uploading in higher resolutions.

This means a lot more storage costs.

    • +1

how ridiculous. 391% increase which is crazy - have they realised that most of their subscribers are from places other than Argentina?

Perhaps that's the reason for the significant increase.

      • Prices seem to be increasing significantly in most countries, even the US for family plans. Not 400%, but significant bumps, suggesting that their costs have possibly gone up by a couple of dollars per user….

  • +3

I had a similiar increase on my CheapCheapLah Premium membership (which I use to get OzBargain Premium membership at a discounted rate).

    • +4

I avoided the hike by going to yearly subscription, after of course stacking the cheaper gold subscription code for 2 years then turn into ultimate premium membership for $1.

      • Did you pay with discounted gift cards?

        • Eneloops have a better going rate

    • What's this ozb premium you are talking about here? First time I hear

  • Ah, same email here. Was great while it lasted

  • +1

I'm still happy to pay the A$4.

  • Wow, makes my Turkish Lira Family sub increase from TRY29.99 to 59.99 seem cheap.

AUD5.09/month still worth it for family music streaming and no ads on Youtube.

No price Increase all year where Netflix have increased prices at least twice (going by other forum posts I've seen), so this is probably just catching up with the Exchange Rate.

  • Yeh got the email. I was like wah big jump. Still cheaper than Au so still happy

  • +1

Can you move to another country pricing or does that not work?

  • +1

No news on my Indian Family sub.

  • +1

Seems like they increase the price across the board: https://9to5google.com/2022/10/20/youtube-premium-price-hike…

  • +1

Meh, still happy to pay $7 honestly. Still cheap.

  • +1

7 bucks is still cheap, for the whole fam to have ad free youtube, able to stream music on their phones. lets better value and better content to the likes of netflix

    • +3

Agree but for the locals it's pretty expensive

      • +1

You mean for us locals, it’s pretty expensive? 😊

      • Yep, and that's the downside of exploiting pricing plans designed to cater for residents in countries with lower wages. Those locals are the ones you ultimately get burned when the company seeks to mitigate the revenue run-off.

    • Can you make different profiles for different users? Think I need to set up a family account.

      • Set up a Google Family Group then all members of the family group can access the YT premium family sub.

        • Do all members need to have the same location settings for their Google accounts?

  • +2

    Whats the free alternatives again?

For windows I use brave browser.
For google tv with cc i have sideloaded smarttube

    missing:
    for the android phone and
google nest hub - the one with screen (not sure if possibile)
(I prefer one i can login so subscriptions are sync)

    Cheers

    • +1

Have you looked into YT Vanced/Revanced? I initally wasn't bothered to check them out but I'm happy I did as they work flawlessly.

      • +1

checking now. any idea with the nest hub?

    • does brave browser filter the youtube ads for you on windows? i just tried and ads still show

      • hmm i dont have to do anything with brave and no ads

      • uBlock origin works well for Chrome.

        • just tried and ads are gone! thanks for sharing. how about android?

        • Open the Hamburger (Main) menu and select Settings
        • Select 'Shields'
        • Select 'Content Filtering'
        • In the 'Custom Filters' section, copy the following

        www.youtube.com##.ytp-ce-element

        • Save changes
        • which app are u referring to? chrome android? didn't find 'shields' in settings

    • Do you know if Smarttube supports "Restricted Mode" like the official app does? I tried Googling, but can't find it.

I have a new Chromecast that I planned to sell, but will use it for Smarttube if it supports this feature.

      • what is that restricted mode? i dont know.. i just watch normal youtube thats all i want,.. without ads
        live streams works fine

        • Fair enough. It filters out a lot of the mature content videos

  • Also got the email, its quite the increase!

  • We got the same email too. That's a huge price increase, percentage wise.

  • +2

Can anyone on Indian Premium confirm if the price is changing?

    • +1

I've not received a price change notification

  • +1

What’s the monthly price for premium in India? I can’t seem to get YouTube to connect to India via VPN so I can’t check if it’s worth the change over from Argentina.

Edit - India prices are R189 p/month which is about $3.63
Turkey prices are 29.99TRY p/month which is around $2.57

    • See comment above. Turkey price will be increased to 59.99TRY.

      • Sorry I got the prices wrong, edit is below of prices.

    • What is the family price in India ?

    • +8

Sorry I got the prices wrong.

      India

      • Individual: R129 p/month - R1290 annual
      • Family: R189 p/month

      Turkey

      • Individual: TRY29.99 p/month - TRY299.99 annual
      • Family: TRY59.99 p/month

      Argentina

      • Individual: ARS389 p/month - No annual
      • Family: ARS 699 p/month
      • Thanks
So no Annual plan for Family

      • Just go this error after trying to change subscriptions.

Your card issuer declined your payment. Declines are often due to insufficient funds or card status. Check your card or select a different payment method

        • +1

Tried it on PC with success.

          • @sweetchilli: What Card are you using?

I only moved across form Indian sub in June, regret that move now of course. It seems India YT no longer takes Amex which I was setup with.

        • I'm getting this same issue as well. I think it may be something about Google India not being able to store credit card details permanently.

      • +1

Time to move to India and pay for annual to secure pricing for the year. Correction: moved to Turkey because the transaction wouldn't go through in India. What a big day of travel for me.

      • +23

        My man, thanks for this.
        Converted to AUD (via Google):

        India Individual: RS129 p/month = A$2.48 /month
        India Family: RS189 p/month = A$3.64 /month

        Turkey Individual: TRY29.99 p/month = A$2.57 /month
        Turkey Family: TRY59.99 p/month = A$5.14 /month

        Argentina Individual: ARS389 p/month = A$4.04 /month
        Argentina Family: ARS 699 p/month = A$7.62 /month

Looks like India is cheapest at this stage, if you can sort out the payment. From what others are saying it looks like India hasn't put up their prices, but I wonder if it's coming? Would suck to go through the trouble of switching only to have it increased again.

  • +5

    Also received it.

It's shitty as YouTube and YouTube music player are both just shit products. I'm not really convinced it's worth it even at $5 a month.

Youtube in particular seems to have massively gone down the toilet. Recommends me absolute trash and the same videos I've watched over and over. Music player has always been shit so at least it's consistently bad.

But doesn't seem to be strong competition (that I'm willing to pay for admittedly) so dunno. Being a cheapass has its downfalls.

    • the same videos I've watched over and over

That's not a new thing. I still don't get it though.
If the algorithm is so good, why can't it remember things like this?
Youtube Music recommendations are similarly shit. But the price is hard to beat and importing Spotify playlists improves it dramatically.

      • Oh the import of Spotify playlists is an interesting idea.

So you go and browse top Spotify playlists or whatever your interests are, then select/import to Youtube Music Player? That sounds like a slightly painful but interesting solution.

        • Don't think you can do it natively, but there are third party services such as songshift that allow you to transfer playlists between services.

  • +1

It's not a strong enough product to justify pricing at the same level as Amazon Prime. Only issue for me is that my kids seems to watch more YouTube than anything else, and I don't want them watching the ads, so will maintain the membership.
I don't mind youtube music ads on the smart speaker, they're not too intrusive.

  • +5

Your YouTube Premium membership has been canceled, and we're sorry to see you go! Just so you know, you'll lose your YouTube Premium membership benefits on Nov 2, 2022… Fvck youtube

  • Hmm…. might have to relook at youtube vanced or newer alternatives.
Adblockers also seem to work when using youtube on computer.
But is there any other option to avoid ads, when using a smart TV (LG) or chromecast
