YouTube Premium Plan Price Increase

Been enjoying YouTube premium courtesy of our Argentinian neighbours but just received notification of a price increase. Inflation? Or more like hyperinflation…

We will be updating your YouTube Premium family plan price starting 21 November 2022
Hi xxx,

We created YouTube Premium to provide an uninterrupted YouTube experience, so that you can get closer to the videos, creators and music artists that you love. To continue delivering great service and features, we will be increasing your Premium family plan price from ARS 179.00/month to ARS 699.00/month.

That’s almost a fourfold increase… although it’s still pretty reasonable in comparison to Aus pricing.

Just wondering if they are increasing pricing in other regions too?

Looks like India annual plan is cheapest for individual. Anyone had any luck on switching from Argentina to India? What’s the best way to attempt this?

  • +2

Don't cancel just yet, prices go up after 21st November, so check your next bill and set a reminder for the subsequent billing, as the next one will be at the current prices (unless your bill date is 21/11)

  • Firefox with ublock origin on desktop works great. No dice on ios though.

What would be the best way to change country?

    Would this sounds fair?
    1. Update your primary residence to that country
    2. VPN to that country
    3. Find credit card that will work for that country

    • I just cancelled mine and rejoined via VPN of the designated country and re-entered details. Only had issues with the transaction on iOS but not PC

  • Wait for it, they will introduced a cheaper plan but with shorter ads…

Does anyone have a recommended VPN or alternative method for connecting to India? It appears the typical VPN providers no longer provide India as an option.

    • ExpressVPN has an india node

Have to follow this. Mass migration to India =)

    THE GREAT MIGRATION

Are you moving to India like the rest of us? See you there!

  • The decline of the internet is well and truly underway

  • Its funny right, they actually lose so many customers by being pricier when if they kept the prices lower, they would actually have a lot more customers…

  • I’ve set a reminder for a month, see what the pricing is then in India, to see if they also get an increase.

My YouTube music is full on Argentina recommendations. I assume that would change with a country change.

Thanks for those who did the currency conversions 👍

This price increase is perfectly logical and shouldn't be a surprise to anybody…

    • The Argentinian peso is down -45% against AUD and -50% against USD in the past 2 years.
    • Current inflation is over 80% in Argentina and climbing. Yes, 80% inflation per year.

  • Does anyone know how to change Individual plan to family plan.

  • +6

that's it, i'm moving my family out of Argentina. The BBQ is good, but music is getting too expensive.

  • What VPN are you all using for India, every one I tried gives IDR pricing (Indonesia) for some reason

    • I tried a couple of VPN (StrongVPN, Windscribe). None has worked. Tried a few cards too. But ended up with this
Your card issuer declined your payment. Declines are often due to insufficient funds or card status. Check your card or select a different payment method

    • Surfshark and Nord have both had 97% ish cashback deals on here, so you should grab them to have proper VPN services. They both work fine for India, give a couple of options.

      • +3

fyi, NordVPN has removed its India server

        • Thanks for the heads up, it used to be there, I used Surfshark this morning, they had two Indian locations.
I guess that's why I purchased both deals, they were so cheap and have more options.

  • Just cancel my subscription from Argentina, is india server cheaper now?

    Adblock extension for chrome. Done.

    • dont update chrome as v3 stops ad blockers

There may be just as good free options for Apple devices, but I found the $3 Wipr app for iOS and Mac to work perfectly. It's a one time $3 for each iOS and Mac, but it's actively maintained and is updated quickly for YouTube changes. It only needs to save you a few minutes of bother a year to be worth $3 imo. But I have used the free ones before and they do work too.

  • Probably because the Argentine Peso has been smashed in the past two years. I was in Argentina in 2012 and was getting around 5 pesos to an AUD. I cannot believe what the exchange is now. For comparison we were parity with the USD at the time and the best i got on the Euro that year was 0.83.

  • India sub will now be the cheapest until they themselves increase

use adblock plus if you’re on desktop / laptop.

  • In the words of the mental giant Joe Biden, "I have two words for you… Youtube ad blocker."

    (Browser extension/s.)

  • I am terribly upset by you all who said the price jump is acceptable just because Aussie premium plan pricing is so much higher.

How about petrol price increase by 3x or a $2 milk becomes $6? A maccas meal will be $39. Still acceptable? This is an extortion for Argentine users.

  • Time to go mobile

  • The huge piece increase is due to the devaluation of the Argentinian peso and the inflation that is about 90% this year.

That's why the plans were generating just a fraction of revenue to YouTube.

Those who either live in Argentina or travel contently to Argentina can attest that most bills have had similar price increases there.

    • 500% increase ?

      • Have a little read about real buying power and dollar blue in Argentina. You will understand. Services have gone up about that I'm the last three years.

  • ReVanced.

    Easy.

'To continue delivering great service, we need to jack up the price'

No you don't. You can deliver great service and keep the price the same.

Sick of the bullshit corporate messaging that tries to frame price increases as something good….

  • +1

So is India the way to go now or have they increased prices in India as well?

  • Has anyone seen price raised yet? Mine still shows as ARS 179.00/mo.

    • My email said from Nov 21.

  • +2

    I just did some calculations

For example, the Family plan went from ARS 179.00/month to ARS 699.00/month and this might sound big, but I don't think its worth changing.

    When this was announced
On 21 Oct, 699ARS was equivalent to 7.26AUD
On 21 Nov, 699 ARS was equivalent to 6.4AUD
This was a 12% inflation in a single month

Looking at some stats, Inflation in Argentina is 80%, which is equivalent to 5% inflation each month.

If we extrapolate this out linearly, the Indian plan being the next cheapest at ~5AUD, Argentina inflation by May would match that price and by Nov next year, it will be ~$3.70-4.00AUD i.e. back to being super cheap.

Anyways, I've decided not to bother changing.

    • +1

Thank you for doing the calculation for me; at least by seeing your comment made me feel better not to move out of Argentina subscription (read: couldn't be bothered going through the cancellation, etc, etc) :)

    • +1

Just as I pointed out to someone above.

People don't really understand the magnitude of the economy mismanagement crisis in Argentina.

My Australian youtube premium family is going from $17.99 to $32.99 a month in April next year. WTF!!

    • +1

Such a crock of shit, so ridiculous - and they wonder why people go back to pirating

      • +2

Just got this email as well.

It maybe was good value at $17.99 but at $32.99 I’ve got start thinking about kicking the freeloaders off my family plan and going it alone.

        • Hopefully your partner is not one of those freeloaders. Otherwise you will be in trouble. lol
