Seems ok price to get a pair.

yah never pay full price for Raybans - usually 40% off at sunglass hut or myer every month or so

    • +1

Bet those who pay full price for Raybans also never use coupons for their Domino's!

      • I've always been so curious who is in such a wealthy position in their life that they don't use Domino's coupons…

        • Same people who leave 1 and 2 dollar coins when dropping off their trolleys in a car park.

    Luxottica oligopoly

    • +12

Dunno why you're getting downvoted. You're not wrong.

This is coming from someone who has multiple Ray-Ban glasses. I like them. I like their designs. But I'm not a fan of Luxottica's anti-consumer practices.

      • +5

Cancer councils look the same. If you must give money to a corp a not for profit is not a bad idea

          • @bargineer: Can confirm, after discovering Cancer Council sunglasses on Ozbargain, i will never pay retail price for Ray Ban etc. Their glasses quality is top notch and are all polirised by default.

Though being polarised means they are near useless for my cars heads up display (which projects onto the windscreen).

          • @bargineer: I have three pairs lol, one tortoise, one fresh and one with a broken nose pads

      • +3

There is no price difference between before and after Luxottica take over. If you dont like them, move along and go buy some no brand.

        • +2

That's actually not true. Ray Bans were poorer quality and were being sold for as little as $20 at gas stations in the USAwhen owned by Bausch & Lomb (who were guilty of some very sketchy practices). Aviators were $79 USD in the first year after the takeover, and increased significantly following that.

The issue with Luxottica is far deeper than Ray Bans and fashion, it's how their sheer market dominance including owning prescription eyewear companies. Budget Eyewear, OPSM, Sunglass Hut in Australia and its far worse in the US.

With all that said - I am a happy owner of at least 3 Ray Bans made by Luxottica (and one by B&L). I've had prescription Oakley's and have had great service from OPSM. My next pair of sunglasses will probably still be Ray Bans, because I'm happy with them, usually buying at 50% off. They last plenty long and only suffer if you mistreat them.

That doesn't mean Luxottica aren't market dominating or that prices haven't gone up under their ownership. Their former CEO said the price of their goods is what people are willing to pay, and of course, he's not wrong.

why's that the pair i actually want never go on sale ???

    • +14

Cause it's the same one everyone else wants, so it doesn't need to.

    • And that pair is?

  • +5

Hmmm, I've moved away from branded sunglasses. Check out the Kingsman brand on AliExpress, the lenses of the polorized ones are as good as premium brands & around $20 a pair.

When I lose or break them it's nowhere near as painful.

    • +24

I have trust issues with non branded glasses. What quality assurances do we have on that UV protection? I happily get non branded glasses but usually from the cancer council or Bunnings.

      • +6

I love the cancer council glasses. Claim them every year with health insurance

        • Prescription only?

      • +1

Yeah I don't trust the Aliexpress ones either. Cancer Council are good when you get them for <$20 each on sale, but they do scratch really easily and the hinges aren't the best. My favourite brand is Persol, had a pair for years, hardly any scratching at all and you can tell they are well made.

        • Persol is great, I wear a polarised pair for driving but sometimes it makes things look a bit different.

          • @JL1: Still owned by the Luxottica group. +1 for the Cancer Council glasses, 10 pairs for the price of one Persol and Steve McQueen I am not.
However I still own a pair of Vuarnet sunglasses from 1980 so there is that and brought out by Luxottica in 2014.

Got a link to polarised $20 pairs example?

Rarely see Rayban Polarised at this price. Thanks Op

If you have Virgin Money card and/or Beem, you SHOULD be able to stack the cashback with the points from VM and the cashback from Beem. I did it a few months ago on the last Iconic sale for RayBans, and the discounts, points and cashbacks were stacking from everywhere! (I think CR was disqualified though…can't fully recall.) Zip had a promo running too in conjunction with The Iconic at the time. It was a nice bonus on top of TRS.

    ugly af

    • Yeah Oakley speed dealers are way better.

  • No mention of size. Only international. Ray-ban site mentions L and M

    • Size 51mm

      • Are you sure? Theyve felt small when ive ordered before…

        • +1

Ordered this exact pair last week, it's a 49-21 despite what the picture says. Returned and ordered the metal version which only comes at 51-21.

          • @FakeBusinessCEO: +1 to this - same experience. Ordered this pair, and it’s a S:49 on the box, 49-21 on the frame. No indication of this in the purchase which is frustrating.

      • The one “international size” is apparently 49-21 - purchase just arrived. Take heed my large headed kings, it does indeed feel small.

    • +1

Click on the 5th pic and zoom in. Size is 51-21-145

          • +1

  • Any iconic gift card/cash back promotion at the moment? Shopback has 5% back on gift cards but wondering if there's anything else.

No Asian fit (size 55). Booooo

    • For those looking for rb3016f (size 55)

      https://www.brighteyes.com.au/ray-ban-rb3016f-901-58-55-club…

      Polarised $200+
      G-15 $156

    • Asian fit?

      • +3

        https://www.clearly.com.au/thelook/asian-fit-glasses

‘Asian fit’ is an informal term that refers to glasses that are designed to fit people with facial features that are more common if you have Asian heritage, such as a low nose bridge, high cheekbones, and a round face shape.

an informal term came from a time where people weren't so sensitive and politically correct.

in rayban sense, it's any model with RBXXXXF, where the F indicates it's designed for asian fit sizes (typically 55 and above). e.g. for the clubmaster it would be RB3016F (instead of RB3016).

  • Used the new member voucher for another $20 off. Ta. Was looking to buy some and contemplating some Tom Ford for way more but they weren't polarised in the slightest, and of course doubly expensive just for the brand

  • This sounds like a dumb question but what's the differences between the "Black & Green" and "Black" option? Are they both the same or are the materials/ lens color different?

Specs look the same for both

    • Photo looks the same, would black be a darker black lense as opposed to green?

  • Thanks. Desperately needed a pair of sunnies. Used the 20 buck voucher and will claim on tax for my sun protection.

You can buy Serengeti polarised sunglasses from catch.com.au for around $70

    • Serengeti is really good

      • I would love to visit Serengeti, amazing wildlife there.

  • Is it possible to buy a pair and then take them to an optometrist to get prescription lens?

    • +1

Yes, at most places however, they'll most likely charge you a fitting here e.g. $30 at OPSM or Laubman&Pank but more at Specsavers

    • +1

yes, but i wouldn't buy the polarised version since you're getting the lenses swapped out.

i've never been charged a "fitting fee" at opsm, then again, the last time i had rx lenses done there was in 2020 so things might have changed. you don't have to get them done at opsm either, unless you want ray ban rx lenses in particular

    • Thanks!

Deal is expired now I think

  • I got my New Wayfarers delivered this morning. They don't feel/sound genuine. I've had several pairs and got to know the feel of them. They are flimsy and creak a lot. Really strange… Don't think it is just a QC issue either. Will have to hit them up
