6-Litre Bottle of McLaren Vale Over The Top Shiraz

Please consume our wines safely and responsibly.

Some may say that's a contradiction.
I say how many straws does it come with?

    ~ $31/750ml. Not to shabby.

    Served on-board Finnair Business Class.
Knowing the Finn's, it'd be a 6 litre per seat, that's be domestic flights.

    • Not much of a contradiction unless someone is stupid enough to think that they'll down 6L themselves.

The comparison to 750ml is not entirely like for like.

      Cheers! RD :-)

      • Well ackchually it is supposed to be drunk in one sitting

        • @Budju indeed it is - by a number of people…. Cheers! RD :-)

  • i got one of these last time as a wedding gift. so cool might have to get one for myself now.

    • Wonderful - glad you enjoyed :-)
      Treat yourself.
      Cheers!

      get one for myself now

Checks out, you must be married…

Buying a one off deal is Not worth the constant telemarketing I get from Bec Hardy wines

    • +2

Hi @Mdaddy. Happy to remove your details from our records if you don’t wish to be contacted. Please PM me your email address and phone number and I’ll have one of the team do that on Monday. Cheers RD :-)

      • +13

        Don't do it @Mdaddy, it's a trap!

        • +1

          🤣😂

          • @seamonkey: Postscript to this thread: Mdaddy still yet to PM details to remove.

            • @RD ADL: Another 12 hours on. Still yet to receive same details:-)

    • I've had a handful of emails and SMS, and no phone calls since first ordering some wine a few months back…..

    • I don’t mind the SMS messages. I just asked them to stop the phone calls. My view is give me a price and I will decide, I don’t like being pressured to decide right then.

      • +1

Thanks @try2bhelpful - At this stage, the intention is to cease the phone campaigns going forward. Their overall opoularity over the last 10-12 years has been wanign in favour of online. Cheers! RD :-)

        • Thanks. I like to be able to do some research on the wines on offer. I do like your Chardonnay.

    • just tell them to stop calling when they call and they'll stop calling

      • Or the easier option, just PM me and ask me.
To date, in full transparency, no email or PM received.
        Cheers! RD :-)

        • They're all hoping they'll get a call from you personally.

          • @Punkboy: @punkboy - hahaha would be happy to to fix a problem for someone - need to know who it is first :-)

With this much wine you should throw in a goonbag to keep it fresh. I wonder if they do that for better quality wines.

    • +2

Hi @TommyGun. Stays much fresher in a large bottle than a smaller bottle. Indeed the larger the bottle format the slower the development of the aging process. Cheers! RD :-)

      • Barrel anyone?

      • -1

As an employee of a wine store you should know better

Without getting too technical, the reason wine goes bad comes down to one thing: oxygen.

That means smaller bottles will result in a lower amount of oxygen that can fit in the bottle.

        • +3

Happy to get technical and in essence you give the reason for my answer above. The ingress of oxygen to volume of wine is proportionally less in larger format, hence the aging process is slower. Cheers! RD :-)

          • -1

@RD ADL: Except that the ingress happens more times in a larger bottle and there is a larger surface area to come into contact with the oxygen.

Plus once you have consumed 750ml of wine the larger bottle holds more air than can ever be held in a standard 750ml bottle.

        • +1

Lol - you are spot on about oxygen but if the bottle has 6000ml of wine vs 750ml, which bottle do u think will oxidise first if the cork enclosure is the same size on both bottles?

          • -1

            @Punkboy:

which bottle do u think will oxidise first if the cork enclosure is the same size on both bottles?

That's irrelevant as the same amount of air goes into the bottle each time you pour a glass of wine.

The larger bottle will oxidise faster because there is more liquid in it, has a larger surface area and you will take longer to drink it.

Every time you pour/move the bottle the liquid will mix with the air and can oxidise, that will happen more readily in a larger bottle.
The surface area of the wine exposed to air is larger in a 6L bottle due to the larger circumference of the bottle.

            • @spaceflight: So are we arguing about the rate of oxidation before or after the bottle is opened?

Despite your retail expertise I agree with RD here.

              https://www.winemag.com/2021/12/08/bigger-wine-bottle-better…

              • +3

@MinimalistWallets: Once you’ve consumed 6l of wine none of this nonsense matters

              • @MinimalistWallets: @MinimalistWallets You're right two separate topics here it appears.
Prior to opening, larger formats age more slowly as the ingress of oxygen through the closure is at a lesser proportion to the volume of wine in the larger the format. In the same way a 750ml wine under screwcap ages more slowly than the same 750ml under cork.
After opening, the wine will oxidise in 2-3 days.
                Cheers! RD :-)

        • it’s the amount of oxygen in a 6 litre bottle vs 750ml bottle ……less oxygen in 6 litre bottler as % total volume ……

      • There is always the fridge 😉

        • …or Co2 gas pump caps

          • @kickling: Not entirely sure they'd be terribly effective at stopping oxidation. Might delay it but the surface area and the volume on space in the bottle would be such that it becomes cost prohibtive :-)
It's a fun debate but mises the fact that you'd be far better off purchasing a smaller format bottle if you're not intending to enjoy 6L with friends at one sitting :-)

            • @RD ADL: Very true. That's a fair amount of Co2 to reform.

Let me know when any Undercover Shiraz goes on sale ;)

              • @kickling: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/730560

Marginally different blend from 2020 under a different label here - says expired but hopefully the "Go to Deal" link stil works :-)

                • @RD ADL: OK interesting.

Given that Uncle Dan's takes a fair margin (but also they do volume…) would you be able to offer a price less than that for direct sales? I'm going to guess if RRP is $30 then you could sell direct for $14.

                  Simply curious.

                  • +1

@kickling: Appreciate the sentiment. Two aspets to that answer. Firstly, distributors play a valuable role in the distribution of anyone's products and are entitled to a slice of the pie like anyone else. It doesn't sit comfortably with me to work around them. Secondly, by the time we've gone to make a work around, the additional margin gained is eroded by the time taken :-)

  • Thanks, bought.
Good surprise for the family Christmas party and I hope it lives up to the reviews.

    • +15

Six litres of red, a family, and Christmas… what could possibly go wrong?

      • +6

        Oh there will be truths!

      • Spirits is what causes things to go wrong, not wine :-)

  • Sweet, dinner for 2 tonight sorted!

  • Is this the same one?

    One 750 ml for $34

    https://www.winedirect.com.au/pertaringa-over-the-top-shiraz

    • @AussieMark that’s the one! But comes up as $36 for me. Cheers! RD

      • Sorry 36. Just thought I should try a small one first before committing to 6 litres

        • Swing away. Cheers! RD :-)

        • +2

You are only saving ~$5 per 750ml so you may as well buy the smaller bottles and have fresh wine and non oxidised wine each time you want to drink it.

    • +1

With my basic math skills, this makes the deal look so unattractive.

      • +8

@Ridiculous Panda as I tried allude earlier it’s not quite as black and white as a simple division.
Full RRP is $40 for current release which is 2021 (accept you might find a retailer listing at less than $40). Museum release 2017 would attract a slightly higher price at $49.
Cost of prodction on larger formats produced on a smaller scale is considerably higher. The glass alone is considerably higher than a pro-rata 750ml bottle, again because they are manufactured on such a smaller scale.
Cork costs a lot more than pro-rata 750ml and each bottle has to be hand filled as they can't go down a bottling line.
Packaging on this includes includes a wooden presentation box and hand waxing. These are collectors pieces, gifts, curios, fun party pieces. If you’re looking strictly on a per ml basis, then yes, perhaps buy eight bottles.
Happy to have a chat on 0433 166 181 if you'd like to know more.
        Have a great weekend.
        Cheers!
        Richard

        • +1

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks richard..

        • Thanks for all the details

Great effort and customer service. I feel bad for posting the 750 ml lol

I think the 6L will make a great Xmas gift

          • @AussieMark: All good @AussieMark - it's my pleasure I enjoy (most of) the banter and a bit of fun with the OzB community. Enjoy those 750ml bottles too and, perhaps a 6L in time. Have a great week. RD :-)

  • +2

This is like saying family size pizza yet I still eat it myself

    • +1

hahaha. I know that feeling. Years ago when I was single, I used to get the family pizza after a big night out. I used to throw the box down the partment rubbish chute so I didn't see it in the morning - it was almost as if I did that, the calories didn't exist! hahahaha :-)

  • +2

ive decided to only have one bottle a day in november, going to have less…

  • I want to put it in a brown paper bag and drink it at bus stops :-D

I would love the bottle on display but I can't get more than 10 wine drinkers together these days.

    • +1

I would happily come drink your wine

  • These make good gifts, chip in with a few mates for 40th, 50th, 60th and stand out from the crowd!

    • +2

Anyone with kids born in 2017 too. Birth year wines, great gift for kids when they reach 18 or 21. :-)

      • +9

Happy 18th! Here's your first drink, 6ltr of Shiraz :-)
        (great deal btw)

        • +5

Haha. I better not tell you that our 7 year old has her own 600 bottle cellar of birth year wines from 2015 :-))

          • @RD ADL: Yes, but is she on the MCC list? If not, she can drink her way through the sadness in the unwashed.

            • @cunningdrew: @cunningdrew will have SACA membership at age 10. On the list since she was 3 days old. Cheers! RD :-)

  • Love the Over the top Shiraz.

Any deals for regular bottles/dozens rep?

    • Hi @G Wok. I’m afraid not, no. Only this 6L format for one last time. Cheers! RD :-)

  • +1

Why are Bec Hardy wines always on sale, particularly with higher Halliday ratings. You don't see the likes of Penfolds or Leeuwin discounting their upper range.

Having said that I've bought crates of tipsy hill etc but do they not hold value or RRP too high?

    • +3

@D3m3ntia Good question but not one I can do justice to in written form on Ozbargain.
      A couple of short answers:
      1. These large formats were destined for China. Once they’ve gone you won’t see them again.
      2. Yes, Geoff Hardy branded Tipsy Hill and Yeoman we accelerated the sale of so we could get to the 2019s under new BH branding and regain consistent branding across the entire range.
      3. Re price, yes agree. Too high. It’s why we reduced the RRPs on them. An advantage of ownership is an ability to correct a decision I lost when I was a mere employee.
If you seriously wish to know the detailed answers to your questions, I’m happy for you to call me on 0433 166 181 and walk you through distribution strategy. Cheers! Richard.

      • Comprehensive enough thanks, yup ended up with a few crates of Yeoman and Tipsy all in the fridge :)

        • Thank you. Love your work. Enjoy those. :-)

    • You need to look more closely. 'Upper range', as you call it, Penfolds and Leeuwin are often discounted.

    • +1

I always get discounted Penfolds, I was buying 389 for $55 a bottle.

They just discount through different chanels.

      • That was the right price for 389s.. they used to go for $40, 389s are overpriced. But you never see the St Henri's for $30 which is the same discount some of these bec Hardy's get to

        • You can get Tipsy Hill or Yeoman for $30? Where?

          Let me tell you…you can't and haven't.

Grange use to be $40 a bottle too, how far back are we going?

I got St Henri's for $65 a bottle after discounts, considering the current price is over 50% discount.

          • @[Deactivated]: would be great to know where you can get them :) cheapest 389 i have seen is like 75

            • +1

              @ggguy123: It's a waiting game.

Plenty of times alone VC, LL will have 389 on special for $80 and they there will be cashback 20%+.

You can get them for that price via Auction.

I'm a member of various direct wholesalers who do mystery packs and I grabbed a 6PK for $56 a bottle.

Wine Selectors once did 30-40% cashback, I got Bin 150 for under $50 a bottle and was 2009/2012.

The same deals won't come along all the time, the last few years Bin 28 was on special all the time but recently it hasn't been etc.

              • @[Deactivated]: How to be a member of the wholesalers if you dont mind telling?
seems like patience is the key:)

                • +1

                  @ggguy123: PM me, I can't PM you.

Some wholesalers haven't opened up memberships for years now, some you can be referred.

There's a few wine forums, I can direct you too aswell. :)

  • +1

I imagine pouring from a 6L bottle into a glass would be fairly challenging!

    • Especially after you have drank a few litres…

    • @brou Not too bad but easier if you decant into a Magnum Decanter, ordinary decanter or even just a Pyrex jug! Cheers! RD :-)

      • hahaha. that'd do the job. Swirling might propose a problem! :-))

        • Just add it to your work out routine.

  • Was thinking if I should get another one as I already have 2 from last 2 deals.
Ended up ordered another one while thinking. Force of habit

    • @wayne7190 thanks! enjoy. RD :-)

  • thanks op just got 2.

    • Thanks @Courtyard. Enjoy. Cheers! RD.

  • -1

A last time offer. Once these are gone, they are gone!

    Heard that before

  • as someone whos not too familiar with wines, does this mean once its opened it will need to be finished fairly quickly (a week)

    • @dyldotmid you’re right. It should be consumed within 2-3 days otherwise it will oxidize. Cheers RD :-)

      • +2

I am up for this challenge

      • how is someone suppose drink 6L wine over 2-3 days?

        • Hmmmm some people have friends and stuff.

          • @Ridiculous Panda: and if you invite 6 of them over, that's 1L per person… seems a bit impractical

            • @dyldotmid: And if you have 20 friends - it's two glasses each……
There as practical or as impractical as you like. Cheers! RD :-)

  • Whoa big bottle

    Any sparkling shirez
