If you want some real ray tracing, just get the 4090.

    • -2

Yeah, not sure why people would claim ray tracing is a benefit of the 3060. Are they running at 480p?

      • +4

It's fairly capable of running RT at 1080p, a resolution which the card is already well suited to.

All the dials set to 11 and expecting 144+ fps? probably not, but most good RT titles are single player stories anyway.

        • Maybe with DLSS in performance mode, and running DLSS in performance mode won't look very good at all.

Edit: I guess it always depends on what you consider good enough FPS.

          • +2

@filmer: Nah without DLSS often dude, well over 60 FPS @ 1080 with RT on in Spiderman remastered, which RT really pops in.

            https://static.techspot.com/articles-info/2518/bench/1080p-R…

Deathloop with RT on, Farcry 6 with RT on, Metro Exodus with RT on and Resident Evil Village with RT on all over 60fps without using DLSS or FSR either for example.

Look of course it's not the strongest RT card out there, and some of the silly heavy ones (Control, CP2077) aren't cracking 60+ without DLSS, but it's going on meme level absurd that it can't do RT acceptably at all. If you're willing to do some settings optimisation that also helps (and is downright the smartest way to configure your game unless you have an excess of GPU power available) and to an extent DLSS too, but like you say it's not optimal at 1080p native, and you should only use Quality mode if you do opt for it.

I've experimented quite a bit with a 3060 and RT and it's more than acceptable for the res this card is best suited for. RT wouldn't be a big deciding factor on getting a 3060 over an alternative, things like 12GB VRAM, DLSS, CUDA, Broadcast, Canvas, Nvenc, drivers etc are all extras that help it hold it's head high against the alternatives and amount to a feature rich product.

            • -1

@foxpants: Is it acceptable really though? Any example I see between RT on & off the difference is only noticeable in more atmospheric games (slower), or screenshots.

If you think paying effectively 50% more for a better screenshot is worth it, then go ahead.

I do agree that if you actually do any reasonable amount of productivity work then the value is there, but that's not exactly common. The driver point is kind of outdated. Nvidia is simply really good at marketing and throwing their money to developers.

        • Agreed.

Even the 3050 can do satisfactorily do ray tracing. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTG5RKahkdQ

Personally have a 3060 ti and it takes most hits like nothing, even unoptimised Ubisoft games

If you want a car, just get a Lamborghini

      • +7

This is 100% what it feels like sometimes when reading comments… glad I’m not the only one

      • HELP MEEEE I NEED A LAMBORGHINIIIII

Finally a couple humans who have their priorities straight. People spend 2k on a phone or 1k on graphics card, in their next breath complaining about being poor or can't afford their rent

      • I prefer Ferrari.

"LHR" like that matters anymore… ;)

I heard the latest nv driver unlocked the harsh rate.

    • What's a 3080 hashing at now on Eth Classic?

    • +1

Is the harsh rate better or worse than the hash rate?

      • +1

        It’s harsher

    fwiw, get a 1080ti > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1TLFBsT2EE

it's not like you are going to get massive improvement just because it's a 3000 card.

      3060 will have warranty,

    • +1

Really depends on what you’re doing, gaming in a non-rt scenario maybe, productivity not likely. Preowned older cards have a lot of risk to them and work

    • Actually, the 3060 will be supported for longer, as well as come with a warranty (and is also likely to have a much longer lifespan). I see no benefit to buying a 6+ year old mining card unless it was less than half the price.

    • +4

If you don't care about ray tracing, a better alternative would be RX6650XT. Generally higher fps than the 3060 and slightly cheaper.

      • +1

        Or 6600 at 300mark or 6600xt at the 350mark. All better than a 499old 3060

        • +1

Waiting for that 350 mark for the xt version !

          • @LuslecGrace: It hit it once but then sprang back up again and doesn't seem to go below $400 sadly.

            • +1

@thearbiter117: Yeah thats why im waiting for it to go down :(

Hopefully during black friday it will

              • +1

@LuslecGrace: I too am waiting to see what black friday holds. 350 for new 6600xt will be no brainer for me. Will cease offering 300 on eBay for used mining 3060/ti that get rejected because idiots still pay more than that ??

                • @Doomedgrind: @LuslecGrace: But then by black Friday well pretty much be at AMDs next gen release, and compared to Nvidia i think theres a higher chance of mid range releases.

Fortunately im personally sitting on an RTX 2070 which is basically this level of performance, but im helping a friend upgrade his computer and its been a bad market.

  • I hear you. Keen to see what RDNA 3 has. I too am getting by with a GTX960 in one system and a GT1030 in the office pc. Technically are still enough for what little gaming I bother with lol
