Do I need to own the game already in advance?

    • +2

      Yes

      • How well could I play the game with a keyboard and mouse?

        • +6

Honestly you won't get very far at all and have much fun as there's for whatever reason no mouse yoke and keyboard controls, to put it plainly, SUCK. Any cheapish flight stick (logitech extreme 3d pro, thrustmaster hotas 1/4/x) or a xbox controller is much, much better to play with. It's a shame really, a lot of people probably don't have any of this hardware and probably would be discouraged away from MSFS by the bad keyboard controls.

          • -1

@drift7rs: no mouse yoke? that's pretty shit FSX had that.

    • +3

Or if you don't, then you can buy the game now.

      • +2

        What is the entry/minimum cost?

        • +1

$75 when it goes on sale. Or $10 per month on Gamepass.

    • +5

      and a GPU :)

      • +6

Not just any GPU too. You need the serious stuffs.

        • +7
        • waiting for 4070 atm, hopefully it runs haha

          • @dukeGR4: Runs away with your wallet most likely. Latest benchmarks found for the 4080 12GB show it to be within a couple of frames of a 3080Ti and they were planning to charge out the ass for it. 4070 will be too slow, or too expensive, or both (at least until there is competition or NVIDIA sell out of 30 series (unlikely when they are launching new 3060 variants currently).

I'd look seriously at used 30 series bargains around the place at the moment… actually I did, finally stopped HODL'ing and got a 12 month old 3090 for $1100.

            • +2

@Abaddon: Im sitting on my 3070 desktop / 3050 laptop it runs everything fine. You dont have to buy videya cards the second they come out ya know

      • Sorry, but I have NO CLUE on what GPU would work so my 7yo son and I can play the latest Flight Simulator…… can you please tell me which card would suit to play the game? ASUS GeForce seems to be what our local Computer supplier provides, so a model number of one of their cards would be fantastic please. Nothing over the top needed as we wouldn't really play any other games. Thank you :) and yes, I understand that you would need the right CPU and Power Supply etc

        • +1

Radeon RX 6600 XT or Geforce RTX 3060 run it fine in Full HD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go0VKg3uG2c

        • +1

I have a 2060 Super, so 2 gens behind, and FS runs fine in HD. Work out what GPU is in your budget, and then check YouTube for videos showing you what it looks like for that card (that's how I worked out a 2060 Super would be more than adequate for my needs).

        • Thanks for your help guys :) I really appreciate it :)

    • Can my friend fly a real airplane after this? He needs to show his family how good he is in September. Asking for a friend

      • +5

        September 11th???

        • +1

I don't know, just asking for a friend

        • +1

          you are (profanity) hilarious hahaha

      • +3

I'm a real world pilot and use this sim to practice pretty extensively. Helps when I need to fly into new airspace or bush runways where I haven't been before. Obviously you don't get the "feel" of the aircraft, and radio use is next to non existent (vatsim can be used but really only at certain airports)
If you know the basics of flying it's a great tool to refine your skills.

        • Not sure whether I should be worry or happy hearing this info from the real pilot practicing using Ms flight simulator game…

          • @BigLeviathan: What do you suggest pilots practise on at home? Flight Sim is only a game if you treat it as such, and don't use its full capabilities. It is in fact an incredibly powerful tool.

          • +1

@BigLeviathan: AFAIK a lot of pilots do. Its like F1 racers playing Racing games.

  • +5

I suppose Game Pass holders will get this too? might be finally the reason I dip back into flight sim after…. Gunship 2000.

  • Do I qualify if I have the Xbox Game Pass? or do I need to buy the game outright separately to qualify?

    • It's part of Gamepass, so yes.

  • +3

Asobo games are great, just finished A Tale's Plague Requiem.

  • +18

For those asking if you get it with the Xbox Game Pass version, maybe try reading the first sentence of the deal. I know it's exciting but you have 16 days to read it….

    • +5

Seems it's the only sentence too.

    • +3

Here it is for those who are lazy:

Don't know if this qualifies as a bargain, but….

    • Reading takes so much time though

    • Huh?

    • +4

I wonder what the 12 free aircraft are. Does anyone know? It wasn't in that first sentence, I read it.

  • +1

I am still on P3D v5. When the PMDG 777 rolls around I might make the switch.

    • We're really in need of a good long hauler in MSFS…

  • I found it very difficult to play on Xbox without a HOTAS.

    • Yea I think only thing enjoyable are arcade combat flight simulator like ace combat.

Need at least a budget joystick 🕹️ to enjoy this.

    • Did you find it more enjoyable once you bought the HOTAS?

I played this game although I enjoyed it, I found the controller aspect not that great. I wouldn't mind looking into a budget Joystick etc if it'll improve the overall user experience

      • I'd say it's almost a requirement. It's absolutely worth it if flight/space simulation games really appeal to you, between this, star was squadrons and elite dangerous I've had so much use from mine.

        • Squadrons is so good in VR. I can never find a game though as no one ever plays. Do you still play squadrons?

          • @splitatom: Nope. I had some solid in-game time at launch and moved on, predominately for the single player. VR and Hotas was a great experience.

      • A friend of mine has A10C Warthog, and it's incredible with that on a PC. I think in Elite Dangerous, you can also split the throttle to individually power L or R engine. I have played the earlier FSX using a keyboard and compared to either of these, with an Xbox controller, it's just too difficult. I understand the challenge Microsoft had with the controller, regardless I just don't play flight games enough to invest in a joystick.

      • +1

If you're on a real budget, you can try the best value for money HOTAS available

    • I think Turtle Beach released the Velocity One for Xbox earlier this year (also can be used on PC).

    • Just use an aircraft than can hover. Some of the Halo ships are pretty cool!

      • Yeah, I have seen some videos for the Pelican and I am almost interested, but I don't have 200+ gigs to spare anymore. :p

    • +1

Life's much better with a hotass

      • Depends if you're in prison or not ;-)

  • Not a game I’m ever going to play but freebie is a freebie I guess

So I take it we have to download and install off Game Pass first to qualify as ‘own?’

  • I thought the game is included awwwww.

My GPU can't power this game anyway

    • +1

Play via Cloud Gaming :). No GPU required!

  • +8

Ah! I call it the Spruce Moose, it will carry 200 passengers… from New York's Idlewild Airport to the Belgian Congo in 17 minutes!

    • +5

      I said, hop in!

  • +2

Melbourne still looks terrible in this game… I put in my address and deploy on it and go straight down in my plane just to see my area looks like Russia :(

    • +1

      Insert Rasputin song here

    • +1

Shall you move to more reputable suburbs, comЯade?

    • +4

Did you download the (free) Australia update? It significantly improves it

    • Melbourne Airport is still horrible. No airport developed for any platform except for Orbx YMML v3 but that was made all the way back for FSX.

There are places where you can download custom Melbourne cityscapes and you can install google maps instead of the bing maps rendering.

      • Yeah Melbourne Airport sucks and its the one I fly out of the most. There is a free one on flightsim.to which does improve it, hoping Orbx/Flytampa comes through with the goods with a decent payware one at some point.

    • Is that before or after the lockdown?

  • +3

Remember the time when all vehicles in games were free?

    • +1

Yeah I remember when games like NFS had like 10 cars total.

      • And which nfs was that? prior to 2000?

        • +1

Yes, some of are that old; looks like I was wrong though, as the first NFS had 8 cars.

          • +1

@smartazz104: Any title after 2000 had at least 30 cars. Why are you defending such a predatory business model anyway?

            • +1

@DontNeedThis: Relax, no one is defending anything.

              • @smartazz104: Believe me, if I get any more relaxed than this, I'm gonna need defibrillators.

            • -1

@DontNeedThis: If your a follower of this game you'll know that they rarely price gouge. Heapsnof content gets for free every few months

    • +1

Most games don't attempt to model vehicle physics to the degree of simulation, though. Let alone the physics of a quad-jet airliner.

    • Flight simulators are generally different. The simulator is more the world, physics, etc - but for almost as long as MS Flight Sim has been around, 3rd party planes were generally the go-to because the stock ones are so-so. So for many people the introduction of these planes is actually a bit unusual for a flight sim, where they're giving out more stock free planes, and that A310 in particular is a paid plane on other platforms (by that dev), so it's more "free" than other games. Plus they're introducing gliders and helicopters into the game, which are new types of flight models. There are 3rd party ones, but it'll be good to see what Asobo makes.

      • Thank you for explaining.

  • This game keeps crashing for me

  • +1

Can't wait for this update, comes with the inibuilds A310 which in itself sells for £69.99 for X-Plane 11.

    • What controller(s) do you use to play the game?

      • +1

HOTAS magnetic base + fsprojects.eu sidestick for Airbus (FBW A32NX, Fenix A320, Toliss).
TM Boeing Yoke for Boeing + GA aircraft (PMDG 737, C172, CRJ, Zibo, ini A300/310)

Honeycomb Bravo Throttle with some custom mods for the Airbus detents.

  • So do we need to click anything or its automatic dlc?

    • It should install as part of the update on the 11th Nov, worst case you may just have to download them from the in-game marketplace for free like you do with the world updates.

  • +2

    Ooh Helo's will be fun

  • +2

For anyone busting into Flight Sim and likes to tinker get a couple of these.
    https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=A…

So far I've done a switch panel, Undercarriage handle and an analog camera stick.

    • +1

Also check out r/HotasDIY for lots more inspiration and ideas.

So far I've done CadetPedals, T16000M Gimbal conversion, Microsoft Sidewinder FFB Pro USB Conversion and grip swap.

  • Pity this little package is only on Xbox.

I have MSFS Premium Edition that I got for Steam so cant get the freebie ann deal which would have been nice.

Lots of planes and regions, scenery and things to do to keep one busy though :)

    • Where does it say PC only?

      • Hi bbot,
I never said its PC only. I only said I thought it was only for Xbox either the device or via XB Game Pass.

After reading the link from the top from the OP's name that says: news.xbox.com

which among it points out that >> as we get ready to bring you the Microsoft Flight Simulator 40th Anniversary Edition on November 11

or, on that link it says:

We hope you’ll check out the City Update 01 (German cities) available today and follow along as we get ready to bring you the Microsoft Flight Simulator 40th Anniversary Edition on November 11. The sky is calling!

        Microsoft Flight Simulator
Microsoft Flight Simulator is now available for Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, and on Xbox One and supported mobile phones, tablets, and lower-spec PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. For the latest information on Microsoft Flight Simulator, stay tuned to @MSFSOfficial on Twitter.

So it looks like it is available for anybody that already has it on XB PC version bought outright or XB subscription etc etc.

Feeling most glad just to know that this version of flight sim keeps on adding value with many updates after update along with bug fixes and some pretty far out looking setups with plenty of tweaks and a big community of users, devs, creators and stores and qualified users who are career aviators.

In the beginning of this particular release of MSFS it took a while after it was being sold for a quite a few bugs to get ironed out and solved but again with community which there are quite a few and main one https://forums.flightsimulator.com/ it gave many such as myself many answers to early day issues which all took time but is running (or should I say flying) in leaps and bounds.

Wish I had more time and drive to spend on this but I rewind back to when I bought it (Premium Edition) and certain am wrapped at its progress and value it has brought.

But looking forward to checking out all those old classic interactive missions from legacy FSX, can wait to see them.
being( the 20 classic missions from the franchise’s past)

Thanks OP for posting and good luck to all you other simmers out there 😊👍

  • Question about xbox gamepass. Are there any MS games NOT in gamepass?
I'm thinking of getting minecraft dungeons dlc for xbox. I had it in switch already. Wonder if it's safe to just get DLC, or get the base game too. Via some vpn stuff so it's not a huge diff in price

    • I believe so far the only MS games that have left gamepass are ones due to licensing such as Forza Horizon, but they give you a good warning and a discount to purchase before it happens.

    • I did that for my son - we don't have Dungeons but we do have GamePass so I just got the DLC and it works fine. If it was ever going to leave GamePass you usually get the option to purchase it for a lower price before it leaves

  • Phone ok?

    • +1
