This would have been handy 2 months ago.

I have decided to stop using AirBnb because it is starting to contribute to high rises in rent. Airbnb takes houses of the market and leads to fewer rentals.

I used to love it but I'll rather help the economy in the long run.

      • +5

I wouldnt use gift cards on Airbnb period. Just leaves you at the mercy of their system on refunds. And really anything can go wrong with this style of acommodation.

        • +2

I got refunds direct to my credit in the app. No problems.

But i don't like airbnb for the issue it brings to the property markets.

  • +2

Got some. Seems to have much better availability than CrapRewards AirBnb offers as well.

I just stayed in numerous Airbnb stays across Asia and I found almost every place I booked to have had false advertising or to have something missing/broken vs what was advertised

The worst case was me booking 3 bedrooms and the owner only wanted to give 2 bedrooms. It caused a lot of stress as they pulled this stunt on the day and I had to pay more to find alternative accommodation

    • +5

Yeah I always find airbnb listing's dodgy while also being more expensive than legitimate places to stay

      • +6

bit like Uber - when they started, all cars were pretty new, clean etc

Now even the "Comfort" level are 5 year old Camry's that haven't been cleaned for 6 months or so

As for the pricing - taxi's in peak hours are either equal to or better than Uber's pricing

      • +1

Yep finding this more and more, and the properties are basically more expensive managed apartments owned by a company anyway so may as well just book a hotel which is often cheaper

    • +2

It's definitely gotten harder in recent years. Asia is particularly random in my experience. Even in Aus since prices have increased significantly its and its gotten harder to find the gems which are not priced crazy.

    • +1

wow more details about the airbnb games people play?

      • +1

In Colombia airbnb was average compared to their advertisement. They try to befriend you so that you will not give a bad rating.

    • Did you still give them 5 stars as Airbnb requires?

      • I find that Airbnb's review system inflates the ratings of the properties.

For example, I didn't review the falsely advertised properties due to not wanting to receive a negative rating in retaliation (which can impact future rentals).

Airbnb knows what they're doing. I think the system has been built this way to preserve host ratings.

There's no way the properties I stayed at should be ranked as high as they are (4.7+) with missing TVs in rooms, couches different to what was advertised, doors with holes in them, completely run down and smelling of smoke etc.

        • That's why I don't use Airbnb.
          I'm too honest.

        • +5

It seems you don’t actually understand airbnb ratings system. Host and guest can’t see each other’s reviews until BOTH of them have left the reviews. You can leave honest reviews as your host can see it only after they review you.

          • +1

@hahaer: Some Sneaky hosts like to message you outside of Airbnb (whatsapp etc) to remove your bad ratings and give you all these explanations as to why their property was not up to scratch…

One suckered me into removing the bad review. Seriously it was rated a 5/5 star on aBNB but it was more of a 1/5*

            • @shegeloaf: No its impossible. You can't change your review after host can see it. quotes from Airbnb

"For stays, if you submit your review first, you may edit it anytime within the 14-day review period, UP UNTIL the other party submits their review. Once both reviews are submitted or the 14-day review period has ended—whichever comes first—both reviews are automatically published and no more changes can be made."

              • @hahaer: Reviews cannot be changed after it's published (14days) but it can be removed by Airbnb if you ask them to review it they can delete it.

So hosts normally ask you to review it and then Airbnb only have the option to delete it. That's how some bad hosts have high ratings even after bad experiences.

                • @shegeloaf: Then don’t agree to remove it as your host can’t leave negative review to you after then find out what review you have left to him.

                  • @hahaer: Other Airbnb hosts can see your reviews. If you keep giving negative reviews, it can make them less likely to look upon you favorably or accept your booking.

                    • @arcticmonkey: It’s not easy for a host to check reviews you have left to other hosts. He has to click each host’s avatar in your profile, go through hundreds of reviews from their guests and find yours. I have never heard any host wasting time on it.

  • +1

Usually 12% cashback on air bnb. Times must be tough.

  • +12

Tips for finding good BnB: always use Superhost with long and detailed reviews. To be a Superhost, the host cannot cancel more than 1 booking each year; average review marks cannot be lower than 4.8 ( full mark is 5). Airbnb reviews superhost every quarter. I have been using Airbnb when travelling for the past 8 years and never had any problems with Superhosts. They might be a bit dearer than others but you get what you pay for.

    • +1

I had a very bad experience with a super host.

The review algorithms must of change recently because the quality of superhost property has been reduced.

      • No the review algorithms haven't been changed for the past 8 years. I know it because I have been a superhost since 2014.

        • +1

          4.8 stars for superhost. .
Well i have been in a few superhost homes overseas that did not deserve a 4.5+ stars.

People have been to generous in their ratings on airbnb. That's the problem too.

          • @shegeloaf: Yes. That’s why I encourage everyone to leave honest reviews as your host can’t leave you negative reviews when they find out.

            • @hahaer:

encourage everyone to leave honest reviews

Telling this to people will probably result in them giving you better reviews cause of their improved perception of you. Similarly, telling a girl that you don't like her often makes her like you more which is quite unfortunate in my experience.

            • @hahaer: What about making up damage claims in retaliation?

              • @arcticmonkey: Hosts can claim damages within 14 days of guests checking out. You can review host on the 14th day to avoid being falsely accused.

any limits to the number of giftcards we can purchase?

    • I've bought 7x$200 so far, still able to add 20 more to cart so I don't think there's a limit

  • Anyone having issues using the Coles mastercard to buy these?

    • +1

There shouldn’t be an issue as I used the Coles MasterCards to buy the ShopBack SS
There’s a limit of 5 that you can add/remove on ShopBack before a cooldown happens

      • What’s the cool-down? I’ve been “banned”

      • Yea, what happens after the 5? How long do you have to wait before trying again?

        • 48hrs from what GYB told me

It might just put your card linking on hold for 48 hours if there's too much activity

  • +1

does this giftcards only to be use within Australia
or…..it can be use for oversea stays?

    planning oversea trip soon!

    • +1

I used it to book my Airbnb in Paris so will work for overseas locations.

    • +1

Yes, I've been using these gift cards to book stays outside of Australia. On checking just now, my gift card credits seem to even work when trying to pay in a different currency, with actually quite a good exchange rate it seems!

  • Is there a maximum limit on this?

    • the funds in your bank account

  • Hi all, thanks for the post. Successfully put through $2+k through it so seems to be reasonably unlimited. Word of caution is that when you apply the credit into a booking, it forces you to pay the remaining balance there and then, so make sure either you're prepared to pay the remaining balance, or load up enough credits into your airbnb account so it covers the total.

  • I just called them and they told me you can apply only 1 gift card to a transaction. So it's pointless buying 10. Can anyone else share their experiences?

    • +1

I confirm this is incorrect. I purchased 4 $100 gift cards and 1 $200 gift card and used it to purchase accommodation. You add the credit to your account first and it automatically takes it off your booking and asks you to pay the balance

    • Incorrect, i applied multiples to 3x trips just now

      • You can add gift cards as many as you want.

        • +1

Bit scary if an Airbnb agent is giving incorrect information like that.

  • I'm having trouble using the Coles Mastercard to purchase these. After linking my second $250 Coles Mastercard to make my second purchase of a $200 AirBnB Gift Card, I've received the message.. "Payment unsuccessful. We've detected some unusual activity and couldn’t proceed. Please try again later, or contact our customer service team for help". The first purchase tracked successfully. Is anyone getting this and how do you get around it?

  • Perfect timing for our end of year trip. $200 one shows out of stock now

    • +1

Stack $100 airbnb with shopback $3 challenge. You can add multiple $100 to one account at airbnb.com.au/gift to use the whole balance for one booking. You will only get $3 bonus on first $100, but rest will all still be 10%
