This deal prompted me to check the Montgomery unit. Now $54, was $46 rrp and on sale for $40 9 months ago. I shouldn't have held off for a good deal.

  • -7

Weird i got thos for $48ish A few weeks ago. Bargain? #doubt

    • +3

Great name and profile pic. Silly comment.

You’re thinking of the smaller, perennial OzBargain favourite - the Montgomery unit which is only 900mm wide and 410 deep.

  • I remember getting one for like $40 dollars during the time Bunnings price match it with Aldi. Anyone know when that will be on next?

  • +7

OP, just buy 5 more, and then return them using your original receipt, and net the difference :)

      • +9

        Difference $39.20x5= $196

Thats a lot of money in this tough time.

      • +9

Sir.. this is Ozbargain. People go nuts over an additions $3 saving on a gift card.

I absolutely would go out of my way to save $196

      • all that hassle

you don't have to assemble the new ones and disassemble the old ones.

        • +2

yeah, just return the new ones with the old receipt

    • +7

yeah all done last night, Cheers for the suggestion!

  • +3

Oh man that sucks. You can though buy another 5 and if you kept the receipt, return the new ones against the original receipt. It's a bit of work of those bulky items but you'd save almost $200.

Edit: just saw above post saying same thing 🤦

  • +3

We bought three of the Montgomery ones when everyone was cleaning up their garages during Covid, they seem wobbly as when putting them together but once assembled they are rock solid. Do the math and work out how much they cost per unit of volume, two of those might be a better option, but yeah they've gone up in price also :(

  • Does Bunnings really let you return multiple current-promo items using a non-promo receipt showing only one unit?
    That's a free money cheat!

Depends on your use case. This Pinnacle unit is a third wider and almost a third deeper as well. The Pinnacle is rated for 200kg per shelf compared to 150kg for The Montgomery and is arguably a more sturdy unit.

The Montgomery is great value, esp when on semi-regular special at c. $40, but the extra depth of this unit is a game changer and makes it so much more useful for larger storage containers, Xmas trees, tents etc. As I keep being told, every extra inch makes a big difference…

      • +4

Yes especially these big black ones, very popular.

        • +1

So I'm told. The shelves are handy too…

      • +2

Wow what a sales pitch I am going to Bunnings and buying two of Montgomery ones I was looking around for something for the storeroom and I am sold Thanks

        • +3

No sales pitch intended. I don't even own the Pinnacle - I just did a lot of research a year ago before doing a garage fitout during lockdown. I actually got most of my shelving from these guys www.ebay.com.au/str/skyteckonline/Metal-Shelving/_i.html?sto… during an Ebay 15-17% off sale. The range I chose used metal shelving and was a bit taller at 2m and deeper at 0.6m, which is why I know the extra depth is a game changer. I also have a couple of the Montgomery units in a narrower area - and again, at $40 they were fantastic value, just not as handy for larger items. Both Montgomery and Pinnacle are indeed very good when compared with what similar units regularly sell for, including many with much thinner framers.

Just be aware that my comments about the extra depth relate to the Pinnacle, not the Montgomery. When you check out similar sizes in the same range, such as this 1500mm wide unit www.bunnings.com.au/pinnacle-1830-x-1500-x-540mm-4-tier-adju… - it's $269 for just 30cm more width than the $99 1200mm Pinnacle in this deal, illustrating what a great price this is currently. $54 is the normal price for the Montgomery, so if you're not in a hurry, it will likely be cheaper for future sales / price matches…

            @UncleRico: Great info. Thank you.

          • @UncleRico: How's the metal shelving from skytech? Looks pretty good and the price is very tempting…

            • @Ezuku: Awesome. Super strong, very sturdy, no bowing and no issues with moisture or mould.

Could be overkill depending on how bulky or heavy the items being stored are, but it is really good gear and accomodates a lot more storage than the shallower alternatives.

              • @UncleRico: Cheers. To be honest, given the price it seems cheaper to get "overkill" vs paying more for something not as well built.

Are they similar to the Walen industrial models at costco, if you've seen that before?

                • @Ezuku: No experience with that product, so couldn't say.

But they Skytech regularly participate in the "select sellers" 10% off ebay promos, so if you're going to order up, time your run to use in conjunction with some stacked discount codes and gift cards.

I have 8 of this kind of rack in my garages. Due to the consistent heavy rains this year in NSW, humidity was too high and all of them get mouldy (due to the material of the board) . Afterward I have to buy the metal racks from Costco to replace the rack in this post.
    Just a FYI, ymmv

    • +3

      Great point.

Someone previously recommended using a pre-emptive vinegar or bleach wipe down after construction to provide some resistance for particle board-based shelving in garages. I used 30 second mould spray www.bunnings.com.au/30-seconds-1l-mould-off_p4460441 when I put mine together (Montgomery - not these which may be more or less susceptible) and haven't had any mould issues (yet). Thanks for the timely reminder.

    • Are the metal racks pinnacle branded or just same dimensions?

    • +3

If you paint them then they are good for a long time.
I get high humidity and rain every year and mine are on my veranda so get wet occasionally. They are fine after the kids painted them in multicoloured craft paint a few years back.

    • +1

I had the same issue with these MDF shelves.
Even the ones in the house got a uniform mould cover.
The ones in the damp garage had thick- like 5mm carpet grown on them.
Had to throw all of that out - still feeling uneasy about hou many mould particles I inhaled in the cleanup.

Replaced with plywood. Treated the plywood with several coats of decking oil with generous amount of mould inhibitor mixed in. Will see how long that lasts.

Just assembled 5 of Montgomery ones (bought for $39 each almost 12 months ago) and 4 Pinnacle ones (paid $100 each on clearance, RRP $240) this week. Spent some time when putting the first one together, then the rest are easy. 540mm depth makes a lot difference if you want to put storage box. Pinnacle is much better quality for sure.

    • -1

Would you consider them at $99.00 each a bargain? Doesn't seem like it to me, if they were selling for $39.00 a year ago.

  • +5

I scored one of these yesterday which i'll use in the workbench formation. I got a couple few yrs ago and have them spaced one behind the other as timber and steel storage racks and they are very sturdy.
Bunnings look to be price matching the Mechpro 5 shelf unit for $99 from Repco which is slightly bigger (250kg, 1240 x 630 x 1830mm) but there was none in stock at my local.
    https://www.repco.com.au/en/tools-equipment/tool-boxes-stora…

    • +1

Ooohh, that is a good deal. Really good depth on those.

    • Nice find. So which one is better in terms of sturdiness and quality if I had to choose between the Mechpro or the Pinnacle?

ATM I am leaning to the Mechpro because it has more depth, but the frame design look very similar in both products.

      • Sorry, i meant i have the Bunnings Pinnacle unit which have proven very strong for how i use it. Can't vouch for the Mechpro because they weren't in stock but can only assume it is either equivalent or slightly better than the Pinnacle.

        • Got the Bunnings one previously have been good and currently are in the garage, I've ordered two of the Mechpro ones for the shed hopefully will be as good, @doorslammer sounds like this should have its own post as there is stock around if people are willing to travel

    • Very nice! Not sure if I need that extra depth for my statues or whether it will just take up more space in my room, mmm.

  • +2

For a shelving system of this size, off the shelf in a retail store this Pinnacle is the best value you can buy - at $99 this is an absolute steal.

The Montgomery unit is fine, but the Pinnacle as said above, the depth is a game changer. I own 3 of the Pinnacle bought last year, they’ve been fantastic. The mid-beam on each shelf is a must have.

  • Good find, I need the pinnacle 2090 tall shelves to be reduced to finish kiting out my shed

  • How study are these? Looked at some in costco and seemed like there was a lot of flex in then and they weren't really rigid without securing to the wall.

    • +1

They're solid. If you don't put all of the weight up on the top shelf you're fine

  • +3

I second OP's advice re: rubber mallet.
They're good shelves, but it takes a bit of whacking and noise to get them straight during assembly. They don't just slot together under their own weight.

  • Is this good for displaying statues and figures or does anyone have any good cheap recommendations for that?

  • North Mackay store has the bigger 1500 wide set for $100 also.

  • I just bought this, it’s different to my 2100mm (it’s taller and slightly longer

Anyhow I’m not happy with how the top half sits on the bottom half… just had a pin and the shelf holding it together…

  • Just got 2 at Campbelltown
    Think there's 3 left

  • Combine with

    $3 bonus on $100 GC @ SB https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/733372
    1.5%GC @ SB

    For a final price of $85.50 :D

  • Why not just custom make a timber shelf. Will cost way less and for the space better.

    • I would like to but also just liked the convenience of buying something that I know will work for my use case.

  • just bought it last week… RIP for me

  • -1

Stick to ebay, same type of cheap chinese shelves, 2 can be had for about 140 delivered.

    • Link?

    • +1

      Link us bro

      • Vapourware. The cheap Chinese units of eBay are typically shallower and made from incredibly flimsy frames. I know from first hand experience that they are not remotely comparable to Pinnacle, Montgomery or the Repco units, which may well be the pick of the bunch…

  • Thanks OP. Good deal, bought 3 myself and a rubber mallet… now time to assemble it

  • MDF shelves are absolutely crap with the weather. Had 3 in the shed and all got mouldy, had to chuck out.

  • +1

Thanks. Bought and returned on old receipt

  • Any tips on how to get rid of the smell of these? I bought the smaller ones few weeks ago and my garage smells unpleasant …

  • I recently picked up he Aldi Workzone shelves which were 1.9m x 1.9m x either 540mm or 60mm for 80 bucks a piece. I was hesitant as I refer the mdf shelving but with all the complaints here maybe I was better off getting the metal ones. 20 bucks cheaper, 600mm wider, so better value IMO (even though it's 4 tier I believe).

There are still a fair few Aldis that have them, because they take up too much space many have them out the back, you need to ask. Sorry I don't have more details but there were posted on here about 3 months ago for a higher price, should be able to find them if you looks hard enough

  • I too bought 5 of these at the higher price recently. Boo!

  • Looks like price is back up to normal RRP, enjoy your new shelves!

  • Missed this deal,, damn. Any alternatives ??

    • Supercheap work bench on sale ATM…

Not really the same thing, but apparently it's cheap

    • Repco do have these for $120 if you are an autoclub member, join NMRA for free here if you aren't with any of the others and it should work out to be $20 more than the deal per unit.

Its good if you need it now, or you can purchase at the current price and hope Bunnings price match again and return & rebuy
