"the bird is freed" Elon Musk and Twitter

Elon Musk has seemingly been undecisive on whether he is wants to buy Twitter, but it now looks like that dilemma is over.
To avoid a trial, a judge ruled that Elon Musk had until October 28 to close his acquisition of Twitter. He has done so and is now the Chief Twit. He explains why he bought Twitter

Basically he says he wants to help humanity but doesn't want Twitter to be a "free-for-all hellscape" I guess there's Gab for that 😂

I wonder if this part of the reason why Paypal will start charging users(at least in the US) a USD $2,500 fee per violation of its Acceptable Use Policy which includes misinformation?

No account reinstatements yet, but is there any account that OzBargainers are looking forward to be reinstated?

Title is a quote from the Chief Twit's twitter.

        • Maybe, but I don't think many people or the media care if it was the case.

@SydStrand: Gab is free from corporate censorship. If you want some billionaire to dictate what you are aloud to say or think, avoid gab. Gab is a great platform, even if the corporate media rags on it, they are just scared as they have no control on there.

This what makes Gab better imo(for better or worse). It made CEO Andrew Torba's day. 😃

Not yet, maybe when it is available in Australia, I might make an account to check it out. Still need to make a twitter account.

        • Twitter has been around since 2008.

          Twitter will crash under Elon.

          • @AS2035: Maybe, maybe not. No social media company is doing good right now. It seems to cost Elon and other investors a lot(companies pausing ads), but it's good for the rest of us.

            • @ozhunter: Twitter is tanking.

You need to pay attention re advertisers.

They did not pose. They walked. They are not interested.

hate is up. Misinformation is up and Elon is to blame.

Trolls and haters now have verified accounts which means membership.

People cannot change their twitter handles as before, some changed it playfully and now they are stuck.

By this time next year. Twitter will be history.

            • @ozhunter: twitter is tanking.

              advertisers walked.

Elon is trolling and no longer the wealthiest man on earth.

He is also putting lives in danger.

Nothing Elon has done so far has benefited anyone. He has given hate, misinformation, bullying and antisemitism a voice.

He is unblocking all vile accounts. Racists, antisemites, white nationalists .. all getting unbanned.

Elon Musk is NOT buying Twitter for the "good of society".
He is buying it for Elon Musk.

He tried to pivot and profit from the purchase, but it publicly backfired. In recent times, the veil has slipped and many have seen through his facade. A lot of people who worked with him, people who were begged to stay/not fired but quit, are reporting that he is narcissistic and someone very difficult to work for.

Most people don't know he is American, and comes from a rich and privileged background, he did grew up in Africa, then came back to the USA and became richer. He has never produced anything himself, so-called "good for humanity". He does work hard, has been extremely lucky, at the right place at right time, and has made some good business decisions. Like Tesla was a company with a compelling group and product, Elon didn't create it, he bought it. He recognises talent (in staff), and made the young business successful.

But his job is basically to promote things, and manage people. And his aim is to be as rich as possible, while being as influential as possible, to leave his mark in the history of humanity (a la, USS Musk, a large cruise liner to Mars, or The Elon Valley Station?).

        • +1

oh wow interesting good on ya mate cheers hasta la vista!!!! churrr….sksksksKKK

        • Tldr

        • Was there ever a facade? I thought it was common knowledge that he was always a venture capitalist with a narcissistic streak.

          • @us3rnam3tak3n: .
Let's just say he inherited what Steve Jobs had: The Reality Distortion Field.
So it's no surprise he has many devout fans.

            • @Kangal: do not out him and jobs in same basket.

        • +3

That's more nonsense than we have time to unpack here, but:

But his job is basically to promote things, and manage people.

This is one of the weirdest lies about him: that a guy obsessed with electric cars and rockets, since he was a kid, knows nothing about them and is "just a manager". Even if literal rocket scientists hadn't refuted this again and again publicly (which of course they have), he goes on and on about chamber pressure and fuel mixes every time he opens his mouth.

I guess its one of the many weird lies that started about him when his company's share prices got so high that people started calling him the "world's richest man" (also incorrect, of course, he's the richest person whose wealth is publicly known).

Or that he just "promote things"? Have you like, never seen a single video of the man talking? Ever? He's the least charismatic salesman in the world. Making products like reuseable rockets and electric cars, i.e.: things so interesting that people talk about them, is not the same thing as promoting/advertising/marketing. In a way, it's the opposite.

Like if you're so desperate to criticise the single person whose done the most to transition transport away from fossil fuels, at least read the wikipedia page on him. Yikes.

There's valid things you can criticise him for, no need to spread out-and-out lies.

          • @ItsMeAgro:

Like if you're so desperate to criticise the single person whose done the most to transition transport away from fossil fuels, at least read the wikipedia page on him.

            …Yikes.

only losers go on twitter to accuratey say something in 280 characters or less…..

humanity killed off in 280 characters or less.

      • what do you call people who call others losers??

    • +4

I love the fact he sacked all the executives

They were excercising far to much control over what people could say and who could say anything.
In other words they stamped out FREE SPEECH but it also became politically motivated.

Now its time for that to happen with facebook

      • +1

So do they, he sacked exactly the ones who sued him to make him buy it, he paid them out tens of millions of dollars as a result, which was exactly their exit strategy. They weren’t going to earn that in a decade working there.

I’m still getting people banned by reporting them, exactly zero has changed, he just overpaid, which is why he tried to get out of it, overpaying on shares that were worth way more when he bid on them /o. Now he’s in a panic and trying to figure out how to pay back what he was forced to borrow, which means making it more advertiser friendly, not less.

There was no shortage of free speech there.

        • Trumlicans are confusing free speech with hate speech.

They think he will free their old accounts and bring back Orange Menace. Musk already stated that no one will be released until the committee has been established and all cases evaluated.

ha!!! will take forever to evaluate.

Nothing has changed. He is still posting drivel, He is 44 billion poorer

          • +1

@AS2035: Dude. He already made about $14B profits from his announcements buying Twitter. What have you made during that time 😅

            • +1

@Scythic: ? In English what are you trying to say? He didn’t make anything announcing he was buying Twitter, that’s why he tried to get out of it.

            • @Scythic: Dude! he made a loss.

over a dozen advertisers walked. twitter made money from advertising dollar.

$8 membership fee will not cover his loses.. Twitter will shut down within a year if not before.

              • @AS2035: Not talking about the Twitter revenue after the purchase but the actual profits from buying Twitter announcement. If you don't know what it is about then just pretend you didn't see this comment and believe whatever the media told you

Lol. Pretty sure the $8 isn't his plan to cover the loss. Again, there's no real loss yet

              • +1

                @AS2035:

Twitter will shut down within a year if not before.

                lol

      • He fired them to cut costs.

he hired many who cut costs.

        he only wants YES people

He is trying to hire many people back

He wants his own executive officers

His payout to them is enormous.

Go back to trolling.. Only snowflakes adore Musk.

Free speech does not apply to a private server

You signed a CONTRACT when you joined

Hate speech does not equal free speech.

      As of 31/10/2022 11:55 AM

No = 367 people think that Elon Musk buying Twitter is bad for society.

      179 + 367 = 546

      • -1

Possibly. He'd want to keep it advertiser friendly. It could all just be hype. Looks like some people are wanting to test the limits of it already 😁

        • It is all hype, those testing the limits are still getting banned, same as always. He needs advertisers more, not less. He’s most likely going to follow through on making people identify themselves (supply ID and use real name) that way people will self censor and he saves $$$ on moderation.

      • +6

Probably Elon is a centralist? (like myself)
Both extreme left and Right seem like lunatics to me….

Examples Right - vaccines are going to mind control you (yes no shit they think this)
Left - there are 50 genders, you must use my prone nouns (no you have a mental illness and i dont care if you are offended if i tell you that)

Twitter was censoring anything that was anti democrates to influence the election.

Not saying I like Trump but Biden is equally as shit and people should be able to argue both ways

        • +47

Elon is a capitalist and narcissist. He'll cosy up to whoever to make more money.

            • +13

              @Trying2SaveABuck:

has sped up the EV revolution

Even to the detriment of high speed rail in America. He promoted hyperloop without the intention of following through with it. Guess what, it just means that people will flock to EVs and pocketing more money.

he has 'made money' doing so does not mean is he a 'narcissist'

I never made that statement and those things can be separate.

              • +3

                @Caped Baldy:

Even to the detriment of high speed rail in America.

yes the world is a much bigger place then the USA despite what the media will tell you, USA is not the center of the universe

                • +6

@Trying2SaveABuck: and yet here we are in Australia discussing an African buying an American tech company.

              • +5

@Caped Baldy: And you think its possible that in a country with one of the highest car ownership in the world that people would let go of their personal cars and jump to high speed rail? Why cant the two co exist?

                • +6

@dealsucker: In the US, the car industry has been killing and hamstringing public transport initiatives because it costs them sales. For some, using public transport might be preferred to sitting in traffic with thousands of other motorists and it would be useful for the long distance trips where high speed transport can go 300km/h and is often faster and cheaper than airlines.

                  • +1

@Caped Baldy: By that metric japanese should not be driving cars at all.

                    • @dealsucker: I never said they couldn't coexist. Elon set back high speed rail in the US for his own gain…

                  • -4

@Caped Baldy: The high speed trains are not for everyone, have a look at Japan, West Europe or East China ( even that the Chinese ones are financially in red). Building high speed railways are not environmentally friendly. Countries like Australia doesn't have such need, or no such resolve to build as economically as the Chinese can (due to the very long civilians of this continent too many sacred sites with over 500000+ history to avoid on any routes) . There are many ways and forms of public transportation.

                    • +1

@VXCT: Agreed that Aus doesn't have the resolve or capability to build unlike many countries.
I don't really trust Australian governments to maintain the infrastructure but a few of your points don't hold water to me.

I think high speed rail works for those countries.

Building high speed rail might not be environmentally friendly but neither are roads and the environmental benefit comes down to the operational period.

Roads still take up space so I don't see how that's an issue for high speed rail but not motorways.

Pretty much all public transport operates at a loss.

Imagine having a home 200km away and it taking less than 1hr to get to the cbd.

More public transport options also means more commuters and less traffic.

                • @dealsucker: its culture. its like taking their guns.

            • +20

@Trying2SaveABuck: This isn't like the movies, people aren't "good guys" or "bad guys". Elon has done good for the world with his investment in electric vehicles and batteries. He is also a narcissist, treats his employees like crap (no better than amazon), and spent months trying to back out of his twitter deal - making up excuses and lies that damaged the company - until he realised he would lose in court.

Don't fanboy celebrities - they don't think about you at all.

              • +2

This isn't like the movies, people aren't "good guys" or "bad guys".

sure, but ones actions can be 'deemed' good or bad - ie you rape a girl who is drunk is a bad act or 'evil' act

you want to try save the environment and enable 'free speech' on a platform notorious for censoring 'free speech' could be seen as a 'good thing'

I sad lefties would be mad and they are because when you are dumb enough to be left or right you don't want free speech you want 'conformation bias'over your opinion.

It goes both ways of course Murdoch media in particular sky news is the prime opposite who pushes right wing agendas which if forced go give a more balanced view would have equal up roar from right wingers

Difference is Murdoch's empire is so vast I don't think anyone could take over it but if Elon wanted to bring about a balanced debate their id be for it

              • +6

His most right wing stances are being pro gun and pro freedom of speech. If that makes him 'VERY much on the right' despite endorsing some of the most left wing candidates in the world, then you really need to reevaluate your intolerance for individuality within such an extreme two party system like America has.

And how on Earth are Obama, Clinton, and Biden the most left wing candidates in the world 😂
They’re centrist liberals at best, and all cucked by massive corporations.
They would be heavily on the right in any other major democracy

              • -3

                @sjj89:

And how on Earth are Obama, Clinton, and Biden the most left wing candidates in the world 😂

Let's just take Biden for simplicity
                -Pro abortion
                -Pro welfare state expansion
-Pro over the top climate action
-Pro electing officials based on quotas, not merit
-Borderline pro (because of how lax) mass border immigration

Where in the world are these key items, the primary points he marketed during the election cycle, not considered left wing?

They would be heavily on the right in any other major democracy

Yeah I can really picture Pauline supporting the above policies lol

He has definitely shifted his outward persona to the right-wing grift in recent times.

Except he very specifically voted, recently, for Biden and therefore the above policies. 'Outward persona' just makes it sound like you're basing it on how you feel about the guy, rather than the hard facts of how he votes.

@900dollaridoos: None of the things you listed are left wing policies, they're just talking points the US far-right uses to distinguish themselves from the right-of-centre, which the rest of their politics are.

Nothing in those policies or Bidens' political position include curtailing capital or private ownership of the means of production, which would be actually left wing.

@900dollaridoos: Being pro free speech is extreme far right these days… you're basically a Nazi if you believe in free speech. /s

            • @900dollaridoos:

has endorsed Biden, Clinton and Obama

              Those are all right-of-centre politicians.

Twitter was censoring anything that was anti democrates to influence the election.

This is bullshit. Twitter was absolutely full of anti democrat views. The algorithm just shows people what they respond to, so people spending all their time responding to democrat views saw nothing else and vice versa.

Biden’s not great but equally shit is an ignorant point of view. There’s a difference between making mistakes and intentionally (profanity) the country and your supporters for personal gain.

I don’t know why people get more upset people have pronouns than the people who decided they have them. It literally affects no one to ignore it, it’s not like you actually know anyone who insists on them in real life.
The algorithm promotes conflict and shows people who respond to opposing views, only those views. While showing a bunch of people only content that supports their conspiracies.

Meanwhile people actually die due to vaccine misinformation. It’s a crazy ‘both sides’ example. Especially since you say you don’t care if people are offended, if you don’t care it can’t affect you, that’s the point of not caring.

There’s undoubtedly extreme people on the left, but it’s not even close in terms of the numbers, ‘extreme’ on the right is basically mainstream in the US. Fortunately not so much elsewhere.

You can't claim to be a centrist and say Biden is as bad as Trump. How stupid do you think we are?

Bloody hell normal people do exist , and that's why you will never get a platform to speak you're crazy views
