solid deal… bought 2 of these bad boys about 2 weeks ago for $265 a pop. o well.

    • Same here, they Jack had a visit, going back for more!

  • Damn.. Thought I got a good deal when they were 242 a pop the other week! Nice find

  • My IronWolf 8TB just broke after 3 years and 1 month. so no warranty for me .

And I am forced to buy another one here. thank you OP.

If it died after 3 years, I would not be buying another one.

It's luck, all the hard drives at this price are similar.

      • +2

Hard drives do fail, unfortunately. This drive has probably an annual failing rate of 1% according to the drive failure report, so 3 years is roughly 3%. If you have 8 of them in a NAS, the chance of you not have any drive failing in 3 years is only 78.57%.

I personally have 8 of the 4TB drives running 24/7 in a NAS for the last 5 years, and I've seen 2 failures. I even have a cold spare just in case another one dies…

        • +1

Been accumulating HDDs since they hit $80/tb back in 2009 and I reckon the failure rate has only gone up, my older HDDs all seem to work fine it's newer ones that seem to have issues.

          • +1

@MagnamoniousRex: Inevitable as densities increase and technology pushes for more performance that we will take some concessions somewhere

    • +2

I'll never touch another Seagate drive since all 3-4 of my NAS drives failed. That was a while ago and maybe the tech is better now. I'm sticking with WD which have lasted a lot longer. I feel like quality may be comparable and the more recent stuff lasts longer or I'm just lucky. I just try to upgrade before to bigger storage before failures or at the first sign of trouble.

      • +7

Every single brand is going to have a story like yours. I've had 2 failed WD drives and 4 Seagates going perfectly 2 of which are currently 4+ years old in 24/7 nas set up.

        • I've only ever had 1 WD black die on me. Have unfortunately had more Seagates fail.

          • +1

@Munki: Ive had 2 seagates die on me in 20 years, and in that time i've had 4 WDs die on me. I've also had an old Toshiba drive die on me, and old samsungs and quantum drives lived for > a decade before being retired, still working. The best vs worst HDD brand is the difference between a 1% and a 2% annualized failure rate.

      • +1

I have 6 of these in my NAS and haven't had a single one fail yet. The oldest is dating back 5 years.

Hard drives are a crapshoot. They fail at random. Doesn't matter the manufacturer. It's more how you treat them (stress/cooling/settings/physical damage), but even then they can still die whenever they want to.

I will give anyone some advice. Turn off power savings in your NAS' settings (and PCs if you are still rocking HDDs in your PC) and let it spin 24/7. Spin up, spin down is brutal on hard drives.

It's crap to be a brand loyalist with hard drives because they're all fragile tech with little reliability. In my life I've had more WD drives fail on me than any other, but that wouldn't stop me buying one in the future if the price was right.

        • How would I disable power saving/sleep mode if I have an external WD drive connected to Nvidia Shield Pro?

          • @m0usju1c3: Not entirely sure if possible, but I think there's a firmware tool you MAY be able to use to disable/enable features.

      • Best to build your NAS from different batches & different brands. I'm running a 6 bay NAS with 3 Seagate & 3 WD in it, 3 from one retailer and 3 from another to try and have different batches of drive. Haven't lost a drive so far (3yrs) so fingers crossed.

There's also 12 TB variant for $322 after discount. Works out to be slightly less cost per TB. I'm thinking about buying a couple…….

Edit 1: oops provided 8 TB link, should be correct now.

Edit 2: also 10 TB variant for $266.8 after discount:

Was looking to purchase the 12 TB too and the price has been increased to $450 now (just after the 8TB sold out). Thanks for the comment though, will keep an eye out around Black Friday sales hopefully!

      • +1

ah damn it, they jacked up prices! It's now $414 after discount for 12 TB and $331.2 after discount for 10 TB.

I was going to buy a couple but wasn't fast enough. I've decided to blame it on the Mrs for being too slow to purchase that eBay gift card for me!

Quite a few people bought at good prices. 11 of those 12 TB were sold, and 14 of those 10 TB were sold in the last 2 hours. Oh well, at least I helped those folks……..

        • +1

Had a 12tb drive in my cart but had to go do something came back and it's $360 now.
Won't be buying from them again.

@Tollery: Singles Day and Black Friday are coming, I'm sure there will be more opportunities……

          • +1

@Tollery: Won't be buying from them again because a popular deal of theirs sold out? Okay.

OK, any $200 8tb SSDs you can recommend?

      Maybe some fakes on ebay?

      • -2

i cannot man… i said ssd is more expensive

        • That's the crux of it, you could get 4 of these for your NAS plus a cold spare for the price of a consumer class 8TB SSD.

      • +1

$200 for a pocket size SSD on ebay? That's overpriced!

          • @FDA2021: Isn't that scary!

            • @Tollery: What's worse is people here fell for a deal with a seller who sells loads of them…. Was left up for ages too.

  • A little bit better than last deal. Redeeming $50 giftcard sitll has no response. Considering grab one more for NAS raid.

    • What giftcard? Is this a promotion from Seagate?

    • I still haven't heard back from my redemption either yet! Wonder how long the wait will be X_X

  • $27.6 / TB

  • Guess someone has to ask: is it CMR or SMR?

  • The 8TB one seems to have sold out. 10TB looks ok though.

  • +1

Bought this from the previous deal and it was loud af (constant knocking sound). Not sure if it's my enclosure but my other WD red drive is silent, people have reported this drive being loud though

  • If you have a little more budget then better to go with EXOS drive from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/731236
It says expired but the deal is still on going. For 8TB it comes to 299 with free delivery. Yes it is expensive but a better drive.

Opened ozbargain today in search of a HDD deal, got in just before the deal expired. Cheers.

ONCE AGAIN JACK CAME TO THE PARTY!

  • Bought 2 from them two weeks ago. One failed after synology smart test. Returning today..

    • I did as well for $260, later that day the price went up.

      • Exactly. For you guys, don't forget to run checks or test once you receive your disks…

        • I run my drives in 'nursery' mode, which is to say you put them in your system and use them as 'scratch' drives, copy files, move files, make sure It's backed up, and after a month of use it's good to put into production. I also do a full format (not quick format) so every sector is written do and then check Smart stats using CrystalDiskInfo.
