cheap enough to buy as a backup/spare..

Good deal for a dual band!

Great price for a great dongle - bought one a month ago for $27 and was chuffed.

Also, 12% cheaper ($19.11) if you buy a second qualifying item. I recommend a pair of Knipex Cobra pliers @ $62.44 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00GNAZS8A?m=A3JCEYBC5L8UJ8&ref…

Pliers to cut the wire and go wireless with the dongle ?

any deals on wifi dongle 6?

  • +2

what do you guys use this for? (since laptops usually have wifi already)

    • +9

PCs without a network card I guess, or if your network card is having issues

    • +4

My kids laptop wifi is terrible. This will help

For my $150 Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF. Great dongle, good performance.

      • +3

        Guess it's a $171.72 Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF now.

          Yikes… inflation bites!

      Desktops without wifi cards

    • +3

Do you live in a world where desktops don't exist? Even current generation motherboards don't always come stock with wifi support, not to mention everthing that came before them.

      • yes as they are usually ethernet connected in work environment, and not portable. No Bluetooth either.

Also not worth spending the extra on some of the premium mobos that do include wifi. Easy pluggin in yaself.

    • GooglePixel 6!

I found usb dongles not as reliable as pci-e cards. USB dongles overheat and not doing well with intensive torrent usage.

    • +4

      Yep. Avoid USB.

This one is great. It’s Intel hardware under the heat sink https://amzn.asia/d/27sd78c

      • +1

this dongle uses the RTL8812BU wireless chipset.

I bought one of those and it stopped working after 3-4 months.

      • +1

I have installed it for a few customers but there is a cavet that it only works on Windows10/11. I couldn't find Win7/Win8 drivers and it took forever to upgrade the clients ancient machines to newer OS (their specs wouldn't really recommend it to begin with but…..)

        • At first it didn't detect on my windows 11. It took me 4-5 hours tweaking, installing / uninstalling drivers, plugging in and replugging. Then all of the sudden the card appeared on my device manager

          • @Homr: Annoying..What's your time worth ha
Good name brands are usually fine. Windows picks up the drivers but I usually download from the manufacturer anyway.

            • @G-rig: It was on Saturday aswell, but I was eager to use WIFI 6

              • @Homr: Cool.
Yeah the one i got seems good, usually have Intel Wifi 6 Chip AX200 150MHz

    • +7

thats like saying Prius is not as reliable as a Hilux for towing a trailer

or like they typical apples and oranges

PCI-E cards require physical installation, which is probably fine for a good majority of people however there are those who would not be able to….or others like me who are simply too lazy/have no room to

I got a Volans USB WiFi dongle but decided to get a PCI card instead, with Bluetooth as well. Unfortunately threw the packaging away so it is now a spare.

(Another option for BNE people https://www.computeralliance.com.au/volans-vl-uw120s-dual-ba…)

This is a good price, $20 less than computer alliance (lucky for price protection claim):

      ASUS PCE-AX3000 AX3000 Dual Band PCI-E WiFi 6 (802.11ax) Adapter, 160MHz, Bluetooth 5.0, WPA3, OFDMA, MU-MIMO (WIFI6) https://amzn.asia/d/1840Y

I think the tiny thumb wireless adaptor i had for a few years burnt out. The PCI freed up two USB ports.

    • I have been using an Edimax USB dongle with my Optiplex 9020 and it's been rock solid for years. Can't comment on torrenting, though.

    • I've had the opposite experience. I've got a T6E network card that has network issues in games with ping spikes. The USB dongle has the same performance and none of those issues. I've had a cheaper card with the same issue in a different PC but every other card works fine. Both seem like viable options to me and I torrent a lot.

Thanks, bought a few for the kids' Techfast gaming PCs

    • +1

      Oh lawd

  • +3

I have had a couple of USB dongles, i use one as my daily in a gaming pc.

    In my experiece:
    - 5G dual band works better as i have a good amount of congestion in 2.4 in the area.
    - 2 antennas over 1, stay away from anything micro or without a decent lenth of antenna.
    - letting my modem pick the channel meant poor latency, locking down the channel means solid 7ms oing to servers.
    - this is an AC1300 chipsey, a good spec for 100mbps, you can spend less but expect they cut costs somewhere and although the throughput should be fine, tend to suffer and not be as reliable (eg downloading 100gb games).

    • +1

In short, is it a good buy?

  • Surely this is better than the wifi card on a laptop right?

    • +1

Not necessarily. Laptops often have antennas that extend around that display/chassis, so while this may be competitive, the mini stick adaptors probably wont have better reception.

    • depends what wifi card you have on laptop. Newer laptops have wifi 6 which is better than this one

  • Thought it was a hockey stick

    • Should be fine for table top hockey.

    • Same here. Got my hopes up for a nice new ice hockey stick

    Fellas get this instead: https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005001690013510.html?
    ~$33.51 all up.
There are cheaper ones on Ali, but they involve mucking around with coupons and new user deals.
    AX210 card.
    Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax)
    Bluetooth 5.3
not too difficult to install. plenty of tutorials on YouTube.

    • +1

      That's a good find.
This is great to install into those small form-factor PCs, eg. Lenovo.

    • I see bluetooth 5.1 and 5.2 in the listing, but not 5.3, as always AliExpress product descriptions can be a minefield of misinformation!

    • Only good if you have a PC with empty wifi slot or you want to upgrade your motherboards wifi.

Not suitable for same use scenarios as the OP one.

      • +1

most motherboards have a wifi slot don't they?

        • +2

E-keyed M.2 slots? Those are not that common really. You would definitely want to check your motherboard before ordering.

        • Not at all, I guess in high end chipsets maybe but I've never seen it on a non-wifi variant of a board in any of the builds I've done. They would have to provide antenna mounts on the back of the board too.

      • Yeah the wifi slot I wanted to use had basically no clearance under the GPU fan so was blocking it off.
Had to take out the second m.2 otherwise the PCI 4 slot is rendered useless (these cards work in the longer slots).

No real drama as I got a USB C enclosure for the m.2 and got that on the RPi and the 2.5" SSD in the PC instead.

        Agree just check motherboard.

      • wifi slot or you want to upgrade your motherboards wifi.

The one I linked to above is exactly the same as this one except in a PCIE adapter.

reckon get this instead as it's $20 cheaper

          • @follow: how long would that take to arrive lol
            no warranty.
            depends what you want.

            • @G-rig: when i ordered one it said 1 month, but took a little over a week.
no warranty yes, but you could say the same thing about the Amazon one. at least with Ali you can use PayPal and get a 6 month "warranty"

              • +1

@follow: whatever works hey, just good to pick up locally or next day from amazon for some stuff.
Some aliexpress stuff used to take 6 weeks but agree it's more like 2 or so weeks these days.

          • @follow: Thx @follow

Bought the earlier AX200 card on fleabay the other day for $55. Sending back & ordered this from Ali.

    • I grabbed one of these late last year for <$25 and it's worked well apart from weird interference with my wired keyboard. I just redirected the dongles away from it and all good and now using wired ethernet anyway but the card works well.

  • +5

    Grabbed one cuz fomo

  • +1

Thanks. Was in the market for one..
    So got two 😊

  • Im looking for a cheap pci card with good range. Would this be better? Currently using a cheap ebay usb wifi and i only get 2 bars of signal.

  • I have an HP micro workstation that doesn't have wifi or Bluetooth. Is there such a thing as a USB wifi with Bluetooth so I can use a wireless mouse?

  • Just as feedback, this adapter is a bit unsightly with long antenna but speeds and performance excellent
    For $22 an excellent post
    Thanks a lot Sage222

    • Strange complaint to make, the unsightly antenna is fairly obvious from the product picture. Best used on a desktop where you can stick it in the top-most USB port. For a laptop you are better off getting a nano adapter so it won't get bumped/snapped.

    • They are for desktops, mine looks the same and in the back of the PC can't notice it. Anyway got an internal card.

  • Anyone still waiting for their delivery? ETA was supposed to be the 18th
