Can you use multiple cards to pay AirBNB?

    • +3

One of my mates has an active booking open for our NYE trip and I asked him to check this. He said it looks like he can make a manual payment with a different card but he can't set the payment amount, it can only be for (the remaining) 50% of the booking value. If the 50% upfront and 50% later payment scheme is hard set by AirBNB then you can only save a max of $200 on a booking if you start the booking with one card and then make a manual payment with a second card. Better than no deal but would've been great to stack 5 cards on a single booking.

  • Perfect! Had half of my December holiday to pay for. $100 back in my pocket - result!

  • Awesome! Gutted just spent 2k on it though but i'm sure i'll have more by expiry date

Maybe try chatting Amex. I managed to get an offer post a transaction last month.

      • Well done Dean! Any tips or advice on how you managed that?

        • +2

Nothing in particular. I explained I had just made a purchase, then noticed the cashback (The Iconic), and they gave me the 'as a valued customer' etc. They were happy to apply it post the transaction (only $10, so not sure if that made any difference).
Worth a shot. Nothing to lose.

          • @Dean Randle: Tried and unfortunately no luck. Would love to hear of any success stories.

            • +1

@darktiger: also tried as I have just had airbnb take the balance amount a few days ago, amex said as it's a merchant offer they can't do anything even though my bookings are for November

    • If you haven’t been on the trip yet, could you cancel, then re-book it using your Amex?

      • +2

as long as your booking has free cancellation I don't see why not.

      • +2

yes assuming the booking conditions all full refund which unfortunately mine did not, each place has their own conditions

    giftcard?

    • Yea I want to know too. The JB offer worked with JB giftcard so hoping this works as well.

    • Want to know as well.
Just booked a trip and fully paid last month so I doubt I will be booking again by december.

    • +1

I'd like to know too though I think it goes into a separate link? Launchgiftcards?

    • +1

Don't think it will work for giftcard as they have different portal.
      airbnbaus.launchgiftcards.com/

In the IKEA amex offer the IKEA giftcrd were sold in another website too but still able to trigger the offer. Probably need to check the merchant name of the transaction instead of which website the purchase has spent on

    Hoops on steroids?
What sounds like the deal of the decade there is growing resistance of merchants.
Airbnb is great to look up going costs of accommodation. Whilst their slogan is Air, Bed and Breakfast the reality is rather no breakfast, deceptive photos, shared bathrooms with sometimes permanent boarders who use phone all night. Check in and out times, some are ruthless like charge $40 if you arrive 20 minutes early.
Not knocking it overall. But be aware, you MUST rate host first to read the review the host wrote about you. Prices have been creeping up to around 90% of comparable hotels.
Out of around 30 uses I had endured at least 10 sleepless nights, hosts usually never around. Airbnb support well what would you expect?

    • +1

Just like anything else. Must do some research about property/host/amenities prior to booking. I haven't had a poor experience in my 40+ stays over the years. Although in some cases I've chosen to go with a hotel instead when I couldn't find an acceptable place by my criteria.
PS: Shared Bathrooms? Well you can see that prior to booking. If you go with cheaper share options, you'll get a share bathroom. Applies to other stuff you've mentioned.

      • Agreed. I travel solo so rarely use Airbnb anymore as a hotel is usually similar (I don’t want to share places), but families have been renting holiday homes for decades through real estates, Airbnb just makes those more accessible , everyone is different with different needs

  • +10

Airbnb is overpriced. Find a property on it sure, but if it is agent managed look for it on agents own website, you will save 20 percent over Airbnb prices.

  • +1

Also fake discounts on AirBnb website, just had a look at a listing for my own property said RRP was something absurd (60% more than I have ever charged) and I have never ever charged that absurd price, went to my agent's website, shows the normal pricing.

    • I love the unreliable narrators on Ozbargain

      • +1

believe what you want bud, pay through the nose at AirBnb for all I care, when you own a holiday rental and list on airbnb let me know.

        • I'm just saying that there is probably some information that you are not currently aware of in this scenario such as the price your agent may have set.

          • +1

@vinnychase: I am very aware the pricing my agents have set it is AirBnb that screws around with the pricing, agents use management software like Homhero or others to propagate listings across different websites. Previously AirBnb had same pricing as agents own website but with "surcharge" separate, now they just hide the surcharge in the total price.

  • Curious if I can use Qantas portal to book it . ( Qantas give you points when booking airbnb through their app)

    • +2

It works! I did this just this morning and it triggered the amex offer redeemed email.

      • Legend

  • Would anyone know if you'd need Airbnb to charge $400 prior to 11/12/22? I'm keen to book, but the Airbnb home will only charge me $300 in advance, and the rest ($500) just prior to check in in late January. Is there a way I can pay more upfront?

    • +1

I’m pretty share AirBNB allow you to pay the full amount upfront. In the App, go to trips, your booking, manage payments and select the option to pay the whole amount straight away.

    • +1

You'll need to spend the full $400 before 11 December. I am in the middle of organising a trip with some friends for NYE and my mate has the booking in his name. He said that he can make a manual payment at any stage but it seems it can only be made for 50% of the booking value. Might just come down to the payment terms set by your host vs ours though or maybe because we're slightly closer than you are to the booking date.

      • I've never come across any booking (and I've done many) where I wasn't allowed to pay in FULL upfront. Maybe it's something specific to the property but more than likely your mate doesn't know how to do it as it doesn't make a lot of sense.

        • Sorry, I think that's poor wording on my part.

He had booked the place and already paid a 50% deposit before this deal was known. So when I mentioned it to him that we could pay the rest of the place on my Amex and save some money he looked at it and instead of being able to split the remaining balance into $400 increments to max the offer across multiple cards, he can only pay off the remaining balance in full in a single transaction. it seems there's no option to make little incremental payments.

          • @daanish: yea ok that makes more sense. only option there is gift cards BUT not sure yet whether that's going to work or not.

            • @gimme: Do you know if you can apply a gift card to an existing booking? If you can, I'm prepared to buy a card to test this because either way I'm gonna spend $400, might as well see if the gift card route works. I just don't want to buy a card and then be stuck with it if I can't use it on the already started booking.

              • @daanish: yes I've done that before. After adding the gift card to my account I've gone to payment options for that particular booking and applied the gift card balance. Any outstanding balance (above the gift card value) will use your default payment method. Just remember though, as you said, you'll have to pay the entire outstanding balance in one go.

                • @gimme: Great. I guess I'll buy a gift card now and see how it goes.

                  • @daanish: good luck. hope it works for you!

                  • +6

@daanish: I will update this post with results but just going to wait a day or so until my statement rolls over before I make the gift card purchase.

                    • @daanish: Thank you very much. Please keep us updated!

                    • +1

@daanish: Pretty sure it's not going to work. Just tried it myself and it comes up as 'Launch giftcards' as the merchant and no movement in the 'Savings' tab either. :(

                      • @gimme: lol I got negged for testing and saying it's not going to work. Just when I thought people can't get any dumber.

                    • @daanish: How did it go did you get credit?

                      • +1

@unknownhitler: Hi mate, my statement only cleared on Monday but when I tried to process the transaction yesterday from my phone and it kept throwing back an "issue with your card" error or some such. I've been quite busy yesterday and will be on the road all day so I'll see if I can get onto a computer and try it out at some point this arvo.

                      • @unknownhitler: check the comment just above your question

                      • +2

@unknownhitler: Just tried it again from my computer. Same "Your order could not be processed due to an issue with your credit card.
Please review your details or try another card." error thrown up again. Tried it a second time with the other AmEx I have that I managed to get the offer saved too and the same issue. Obviously no point in trying it with any other cards, so I wonder if it's an AmEx problem or an AirBnB issue for me. Might have to call AmEx when I get a moment and see what they say.

                        • @daanish: Hey mate, that happened on my primary card, then worked on a supplementary one. No idea why. Either way the cashback doesn't work for the gc vendor so probably a good thing it didn't go through

  • +2

Looks like it has reached the maximum 20,000 as the offer has disappeared. Damn……too slow.

    • +1

Probably 95% from ozbargain. min 5 cards per person here lol

  • +1

No way this got 20k that quickly. I wonder if they pulled it.

    • It's still showing as available on the 2 cards I saved it on this morning but also noticed just now that it was not available to save on the rest of my supps. If the offer is properly pulled would it get removed from already saved cards? I've never seen/noticed an offered get pulled before.

      • Was it available on your supps too? I didn't check my supps.

        • +1

It was on my main and the supp that is linked to the same login as my main. Usually if an offer is on the supp that's linked to the same login as the main it will also be on the other 3 supps with individual logins but I but I didn't bother logging into the other 3 supp accounts to check them until just now and I can't see them on the other three.

  • I noticed a few AirBnB places charges more as i increase the adults i choose staying in the place. Anyone who lists on airbnb can explain why?

IE, the place im booking has 3 double beds. If i say only 2 people are staying its $100 less than 4 or 5 people staying, for the same dates.

    • Seen that before. Even a difference between 1 and 2 people. Probably wear and tear, towels and maybe insurance etc. If it's self-check and/or a place where you're not likely to interact with the owner/agent on a regular basis go with the lower number ;)
