    I still remember advice from my first year at uni, unfortunately I forget who gave it. Paraphrased I'm sure, but the gist of it was (in relation to recording lectures);

Lectures are bad enough to sit through once, why would you want to do it a second time?

…and I agree with and follow that advice.

I'm sure recording some lectures might be productive, so this may be a useful deal for you.

I suspect the idea is that one if you sits through it, the rest listen/read notes later.

The sage advice I got from a maths lecturer

Every mark over a pass is a wasted beer. Don't be that sober overachiever.

      And another

Uni marks will get you your first job. The friends you make at happy hour will get you your subsequent ones.

      • Was the maths lecturer giving this advice while bar-flying at the student bar on a school night, by any chance? Haha, both good tips, to be sure.

      • I recall “Ps for Degress”.

The only downside to this is if you wish to do further studies.
Maybe the higher marks would be helpful.

and even worst, we need to pay sh*t load of $ for uni fees. and the international students, feel sad for you - even more $.
and our uni reputation isnt that good in the world

      • Uni reputation is garbage because the metrics are research related aren't they?

If only they fkd off most of the research and actually focused on teaching….!

        • Don't know where this is coming from. We have two unis in Melb alone that are top 50 globally. Whether it's research based or not, we have some great unis.

          • +1

@reloxation: If they're top 50 based on research there's no guarantee they are great at teaching. If they are, great. If they're not then what good is that baseless POS ranking?

My uni experience at UWA was that the quality of the lecturers was average as a whole but many were terrible. The terrible ones were allowed to be there due to research (whilst the lecturing part of their job was a 'because they had to' activity).

There's no fair excuse for that. Everyone lecturer at uni should be a brilliant teacher. There's enough skilled people and only a few tertiary lecturing jobs.

            • @justtoreply: I see your point. I guess it depends on the angle at which you judge a good university - yes they're for teaching, but they're also a research institution. Both metrics are important in my mind.

My experience at one of these top 50 unis has been excellent so far. Yes, there are some average lecturers (more than I'd like) that are there for research and don't seem to care about the teaching side, but I've also had plenty that were excellent at their job.

Ideally they'd all be great, but part of the challenge is going out by yourself and learning the content. Teaches you to be independent I guess.

    • lol first time is for taking outline notes, headings, mindmap things
second watch is for indepth notes

The advice I got from one of my uni lecturer.
"You don't come to uni to study, you come to uni to learn how to learn."

Also from the same lecturer when one of the students asked if an activity is compulsory.
"Nothing is compulsory in uni, nor is passing."

The thing that students need to understand. Teachers/professors dont care if you pass or fail. They still get paid regardless. Once you get this through your head. You soon realise its all on you. Wether you learn or not.

        …and w(h)ether you've passed english… :)

Funny enough i still passed somehow. Imagine that. 🙃

  • As i have always told people i have worked with past and present. Be nice to your colleagues. You never know they could be of help in your next job opportunity.

My current and past 2 jobs were from the assistance of former colleagues. They put a good word in for me.

Same rule applies to your schoolmates.

  • Watch lectures online at 2x speed, adjust when you need to go through stuff slower, pause and note take as you go, profit.
