55" OLED or 65" QLED ~ $2k Budget

Hey everyone.

With Black Friday / Cyber Monday around the corner, I have found myself in a bit of a quandary.

The boss (wife) has allowed a budget of around $2000 to get a new TV (main lounge room).

Through my work, we have access to RT Edwards (wholesale pricing), but the promotional price at TGG or JB seem to come in a little cheaper from time to time.

At the moment it's about $2300 for the C2 and $1950 for the QNED 80

The viewing distance is about 3.5m, watching tv/sport mainly.

If you were in my shoes, would you buy a smaller OLED or the larger LED? (65" is the biggest that I can fit on the wall)

  • Get the larger one - it's for your work not your home, so it appears it's just about function. It's not like you'll all be watching movies at work or for extended periods, at least in (my) theory.

    • Not for my work, just access to commercial pricing through work.
100% will be used for recreational viewing

    • 65" is perfect for 3.5m viewing distance
      OP will love it!

  • Your eyes, your choice.
Oled turns off when black, others make larger screen!

Metz 65" OLED for under 2k… unless gaming on it

Grab boss's hand and rub on your arse. Take pic. You now have sexual harassment claim, use this to blackmail an increase in budget to buy a bigger better tv.

By "the boss", do you mean your wife?

    • Yes, edited original post to be more clear.

I'm at 3.5m and strongly recommend the 65" - had a 75" and it was too big.
Went from a 55" Panasonic OLED (Incredible panel) to a 65" Hisense Q8 (slightly less incredible panel) although is far brighter if its a sunny room.

55" is just slightly too small, admittedly though the picture quality of the OLED is incredible.

  • 100% go for the QLED. If it's going to be used watching sports most of the time you'll want the extra brightness

I've got a 55" OLED, and I find that on the small end when sitting ~2.5M away.
I'd say go for the 65" QLED for the size considering you're 3.5M away, and also for the brightness it provides for sports.

55" is not suitable for 3.5m. Go for the 65" but get a TCL C835. LG LCD TVs are junk.

  • For sport, lcd tends to be better due to anti-burn in tech auto dimming the screen from stationary items. Not sure if this is still an issues with the C2.

    • good to know, but i mainly watch motorsport so mostly moving/changing angles with only the timing screen staying the same spot

LCD will burn in as well. Takes longer but does happen

After having gone through from CRT to plasma to LCD and finally OLED, there’s only one choice: OLED

Blacks are black and the vibrancy of colors, especially if the source is HDR10, is exceptional!

  • Having owned 2 Hisense panels, a 55" 4k set….when 4k just became available, and 4yrs on a 65" ULED, 5yrs on and doing just fine. I paid $1000 forvthe 65, and its served me well enough. I should point out that Im quite fussy with all things home theatre, and aside ftom the slight clunkiness of the OS, it performs superbly with 4k content, XBox 4k bluerays or other 4k or HD media….I don't reallycwant to buy Chinese, and yet, at that price point, its been faultless and, still, one of few available to me re my budget.
I think also, from best recall, that the 65" has a Samsung panel, as unlikely as that may seem.
Id buy another, looking at a 75", again which are extremely well priced. Ive also had Sony 65" and LG 55"….although this was around 2009, but it failed big time after 2yrs and at 2k, was hardly cheap.
Id go have a decent look & contrast/compare. Some of the panels have got silly money on the price tags. Woshing you luck and wisdom for your choices👍🏻
