Car Impounded Doing 112km/Hr in a 60 Km/Hr Zone

I have just gotten my car impounded doing 112km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone, they gave me a impound ticket with a release cost of $1040 at 12:00 A.M.

They gave me my licence back and said I could have been arrested but now I am gonna get a court date and they said I'm gonna lose my licence for a minimum of 12 months. I have reflected on my mistake. I was being incredibly stupid endangering myself and others. I apologise to everyone. I am 19 years old and on my red p's. I contacted Legal Aid and they asked me to contact them once I get the court notice. Are there any other costs other than the release fee? Can I pick my car up from the impound yard 4 days later than its release date (I tried contacting the impound yard but they do not pick up)? How much trouble am I in? How long will the notice take to arrive?

I would really appreciate the help. I did not understand the seriousness of the offence when I committed it but now I understand there is much more to it. The state is Victoria.

You're not going to get any sympathy here.

How much trouble am I in?

Fine and loss of license likely.

    • +45

52km over the limit… in a residential/built up area… just how much sympathy do they deserve?

      • +8

I won't even say zero, minus 100 if it up to me…

        • +5

          Minus 112 to be exact.

            @ronnknee:

Last night Fawkner Highway Patrol detected Red P plater travelling at an alleged speed of 112kph in a 60kph zone on Aitken Blvd, Craigieburn. He told police he was "nodding off" and had no idea how fast he was going. With very little driving experience, very little sleep and travelling at a very high speed, we are thankful no one was seriously hurt.

      • +9

He didn't ask for your sympathy

    • +17

I don't think he asked for any sympathy!

    • Cancellation of license perhaps? Meaning they may need to resit their Ls

    • The judge will certainly be very harsh on this one.
Suggest OP gets a decent solicitor experienced in traffic matters no matter what it costs.
Legal aid wont give you the time of day - Maybe 5 mins - false economy, if OP indeed does qualify

  • +28

    Pro tip: don't speed.

      • +43

        That's covered under "don't speed".

  • +25

    deserved.

  • +66

    doing 112km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone

wtf… stay off the roads mate.

    • +26
      • I immediately thought that this might be that guy when I saw the title…

      • +5

Imagine how many km's it took to get to 280, would've passed a bunch of cars getting fright of their lives
        .

        • +1

Na, I know that stretch - he accelerated to that speed on the long downhill stretch to the Nattai river (the booking was at the top of the climb up from the bridge). It is 3 lanes each way there, so there would have been plenty of room for him to avoid others. But like OP, a young idiot. How do teenagers afford these sort of cars?

          • +2

@derrida derider: It was not a performance car, it was a Toyota Aurion. I paid 10k cash for it a 8 months ago.

            • +3

              @[Deactivated]: Mmmmm

Who were you trying to impress…speeding in a toyota aurion. People will just think you're an uber driver in a rush. I think most of the time they actually take the car off you permanently if you're heaps over the limit….but it this case they probably didn't want the car at all. ^__^

Just don't speed next time bro.

            • +4

@[Deactivated]: Remember; just because you can get your car back, doesn’t mean you’ll be allowed to drive it. I’ve read where some states crush the cars of repeat morons.

            • @[Deactivated]: Aurion V6 ? 3.5L engine 270bhp 0-100 in 7 seconds ?

or Aurion Sportivo TRD supercharged 325bhp 400Nm ?

          • @derrida derider: Yeah hard to see 2.0L golf getting to 280kmh without downhill push

            • +1

@dcep: It's a modified golf r. Be surprised at how quick they are.

      • What an idiot. I'm old enough to know not to do a thing like that. I've never done over 220.

      • -1

Wonder how the police caught up to him.

        • They dont chase, they already have partner on radio waiting for the catch on the other end.

  • +54

I did not understand the seriousness of the offence when I commited it

    Bullshit

I wouldn't bother with legal aid. 19yo doing reckless speed, judge will want to make an example of you so you don't repeat it

    • +22

Completely agree. The book will be thrown at him. The best thing he can do is wear a good shirt and tie, look contrite, apologise his arse off and have a bus ticket in his wallet.

    • -3

I did not understand the seriousness of the offence when I commited it

      Bullshit

There is some truth in it. A 19yo with their hormones in afterburner mode, would probably do some crazy shit.

Good thing that we have laws that deals with such consequences.

  • +19

    They should crush your car

    • +31

That's never a good idea IMO. Forfeiture sure but it can be donated to charity or auctioned off for charity etc rather than just destroying it.

"You have 30 minutes to move your car", "you have 10 minutes to move your car", "your car has been impounded", "your car has been crushed into a cube", "you have 30 minutes to move your cube".

      • +7

        Is it about my cube?

        • Yes, we’d like to speak with you about your extended warranty… it has been revoked.

    • +1

  • +12

Once you have your court date (could be a long time from now) the magistrate will order your license suspension (12 months most likely) and impose a fine also; probably ~$900 or so (unless other violations also occurred). So the release fee + the fine will be your financial penalty. If you pick up the car after the release date you may find the (private) storage provider charges you extra.

  • +5

Can I pick my car up from the impound yard 4 days later than its release date

Mostly likely a daily fee on top of the initial fee.

  • +1

LOL… Oh, man. I didn't get past the first sentence… priceless. 72km/h over the limit and they gave you your license back?? What state of this? Different states have different laws…

    Also LOL @ troll post.

    • +29

      72km/h over the limit

How's your math skills going there peg? :P

Pretty sure you're walking home if they stopped on the side of the road.

If your motor vehicle is overdue for collection, there will be additional storage costs added to your payment amount. These additional costs are $13.50 per day after the vehicle’s eligible release date.

    • +4

      I appreciate the information mate!

    • +7

Hmm cheaper than parking in some places. If only there was a way to get to get the car in for free…

      • Be a cop, free parking forever

  • +2

You're lucky you're not down the station getting rammed. If it happens again you will.

  • +11

Lost me at 112km/hr in a 60km/hr zone

      • +3

You show remorse, which will at least look good in court. But yeah don't expect driving for some time.

      • +53

You only regret it because you were caught ;)

        • +48

100% this. If they had have made it home and shut the car down and went to bed, there would be no regret and no remorse, only a sense of emboldenment to continue to do reckless things in a motor vehicle.

I'm just glad they got pinged now before they ended up killing someone else with their stupidity.

      • +10

Driving is a privilege, not a right. You deserve every punishment you're getting for this.

      • +3

Construction barricades? This could be a construction zone subject to even lower speed limits.

      • +3

        500m stretch, 112km/hr…
Over 31 meters per second in a 60 zone. So much to go wrong.
Learn from this mistake. You are lucky to be posting about a fine. There are circumstances not within your control that, if different, could have resulted in mangled bodies and traumatised lives at your hands. This time it’s a fine on your hands.
My advice would be to genuinely learn from the experience. Refresh your knowledge on stopping times, the physics of huge metal object on wheels zooming at great speed, the great number of losses that people have endured resulting from speeding drivers — if you destroy a fancy car you at least have the rest of your life to earn the money to pay it back and make things right, there is no way to compensate a life lost. Tell the judge that you understand this now and prove it.

    • +1

U could say hes too fast to keep up with xD

  • +16

Part of growing up is understanding that when you gamble - sometimes you lose.
Be glad that you didn't lose more than some money and your licence.

    • -3

112kmh in a 60kmh zone is a gamble? OP was being an idiot and is lucky no one got hurt.

      • +16

Go back, read it again - slowly - then think.

        • +4

I looked up various statistics, and Australia's literacy rate is surprisingly terrible lol

          • +2

@Blitzfx: That isn’t surprising to me after my time on this website

        • The last word is the hardest part.

  • +17

At least the OP is taking responsibility, no asking to get out of anything.

I can sympathise with the OP.

I too had a lead foot when young, unfortunately I had a Holden Gemini and it would take 2 mins to reach 100kph.

    • Ur not supposed to go 2 times over the speed limit wtf? Would u still sympathise if he killed someone?

      • +18

I was young and dumb once. Could play the what if game until the cows come home.

In my opinion the only way the behaviour changes is losing your licence to make you realise what a privilege it is to have one.

        • +2

          100%

Im just glad no innocent person had to suffer due to his stupidity. U would have to be a complete idiot to not realise going over the limit by just 20 puts u and others in danger but this kid did 60 over the limit.

Theres a difference between being young and dumb, and young and brainless.

          • +10

            @LuslecGrace:

going over the limit by just 20 puts u and others in danger but this kid did 60 over the limit.

As much as I agree that speeding adds danger, the speed limits are not always set at the limit for actual safety. There are situations where the posted speed limit is well under that of a road with the same conditions in another area.

We’ve been conditioned in this country that the only safe speed is what is posted on a sign to the detriment of our driving skills.

Exceeding the speed limit is wrong but not always ‘unsafe’. what OP did was stupid and dangerous.

            • @Euphemistic: Agreed.

In general the faster ur going the more likely of a chance of an accident

            • +2

@Euphemistic: True, kind of. There is always elevated risk travelling above a posted limit because you'll be going faster than other road users expect, causing them to misjudge the closing speed and cause an accident.

    • Holden Gemini and it would take 2 mins to reach 100kph.

Same. I remember following my brother, who was in his commodore, over taking a slow car at 80kph in a 100 zone. Took him a couple of seconds and felt like a minute for me to get past! The back end was surprising light so was fun at low speeds, though!

  • +2

Time at His Majesty's pleasure could be on the cards.

    • +5

      No chance.

    • +3

Yeah absolutely no way a 19-year-old first time offender would get prison time for this.

    • +1

You saying he will get to meet the queen? The death penalty?

  • +1

( I tried contacting the impound yard but they do not pick up)?

Try contacting the tow truck company if you have another vehicle to donate and require pickup due to loss of licence…

  • +14

I'd buy some good headphones, makes catching the bus a bit more tolerable.

  • From what I have heard, they are more or less set judgements as signing and dancing by anyone will not affect it much.

  • +1

A red P, someone that was deemed competent driving, speeding twice the amount of the speed limit, asks for forgiveness and blames his age? Nah I blame ur brain (if u even have one)

U deserve every bit of fee and bad treatment. U should be thankful to god/a higher being that u didn't end up in jail for killing someone, or even worse.

    • +3

Curiosity has got the best of me, in this situation what could be worse than killing someone? Please don't say more than 1 person either

      • +6

I actually left it up for interpretation, what do u think is worse than killing a person with a car?

Perhaps being disabled ur whole life unable to walk or speak, unable to see or hear, possibly unable to eat properly anymore?

Perhaps hitting a petrol station while u are scorched alive alongside the others that are at the station as well.

And just maybe, doing a hard turn that made u go through the rails and fall down into a forest/pond, unable to get out and unable to call for help. Just a slow and very painful death.

        • +3

Sounds like you've thought about this before!
I guess I was thinking more from a legal standpoint where culpable driving would get you more than crippling someone (I would imagine)

          • +1

@timthetoolman: It doesnt take much thinking to know these can very likely happen due to irresponsible speeding.

      • +5

what could be worse than killing someone?

Injuring someone to the point where they have to live their rest of their life as a vegetable in a wheelchair for something that they had no choice in. I would sooner be dead then to end up a dribbing mess, or be in agony or paralyzed for the rest of my life over someone else's stupid decisions.

THAT is worse then killing someone. If you are dead, you are dead… If you are maimed, you are like that for years and years and years…

  • +12

Yes, we can all hang crap on you now, but many of us have been young and stupid (I have, including a licence suspension). Some people need to learn the hard way. You are going to lose your licence. It’s going to cost you big money. You sound remorseful at least. Learn from this. Go to court, cop it on the chin and don’t do it again. You’ll need a bus pass or a bicycle for a while.

If you want speed, the track is the only place to do it.

  • +5

We all do stupid shit at some time of our lives. It sounds like you've learnt from it without having to kill someone.

  • Time to get an escooter.
