The $2 sim from other telcos will not have 365 expiry.

          • @CodeXD: So, you lose it?
To me, $5 credit is good because you pay 5 for $5 credit + number, but expiry doesn't sound so good?
If I needed a phone number to recieve texts, like others describe, for whatever, an expiry wouldn't be that good (I would think).

            I'm feeling I'm missing something?

            • +2

@guy4: The aldi sim card is like you say, pay $5 for number + $5 credit to spend in 365 days. The other sims will be like 30 days.

            • @guy4: This SIM has $5 credit to use in 365 days. What else to be miss?

    Good morning OP

      Good… morning…?

      • -4

there is no bargain, its been there at checkout since forever

        • +3

          Yet you upvoted?

          • -1

@MiscOzB: well OP took some effort and people find it bargain

  • Anyone know if call diversion to an international number works?

    • I don’t think it would as you would need international minutes for that.

  • +2

Good for a spare number to give out to not have spam on your main phone.

    • this is what i do.
and then I turn off the spam Sim card on my phone

  • E-sim available?

Asking because Amaysim has a similar option. So if you are on a prepaid Amaysim plan, at the end of it you can switch to PAYG for free.

    • +1

Not yet, Amaysim is still the closest thing with eSIM.

  • Can you port your existing number into this?

  • Anyone knows if I port my optus number to aldi, what happen to my optus mycredit balance, currently $100

    • +2

I would've thought that would be obvious

    • You'll lose the balance.

      • +2

        You'll lose the balance

        … and fall over 😂

        • and your identity, sorry mate…

    • +2

I believe the outstanding balance is donated to a Romanian orphanage.

    • +4

Optus is not worried about data.

    • +1

      It becomes theircredit.

  • Can you still receive calls/ SMS after you run out credits?

    • Sure can, you get 365 days from activation or recharging.

  • +1

Might chuck one of these in my Nokia. I like to use the thing and be able to actually use it, but I feel I'm wasting a real SIM on it. This should plod me along fine for a lil bit of mbasic.fb'ing throughout the year, uses on average a couple of kilobytes every 10/15 minutes of being on there. Cheers OP.

  • I'm on this now for my spare phone, can I port it to whatever free offer from another provider for a month then use this to get another year for $5?

    • +1

      Yes

  • +1

You can get 100MB of data if you only use it for data. Yes, MB.

  • Can you use for Uber sign-up to get new user bonus?

    • I would assume if you use the new number then you would be able

    • +1

Yes, but don't use the same credit card or email address as another account. They have a system that cross-references these details, and if you're caught both accounts will get banned.

  • +1

    does roaming work?

    • +1

      Yes

      • +2

so only incoming texts are free overseas?

        • +3

          Yes free incoming SMS
$1 a minute incoming call. Never answer a call.

  • Was planning to get this after I unlock my phone out of Optus

  • I paired this with the 30GB Data Plan from the Optus Tab A8 deal running dual SIM on my phone, so I have all the data I need while out and about and don't have to sacrifice not being able to receive phone calls and SMS being on a Data Plan.

    • That's a sick idea and one step closer to getting rid of mobile number.

Can't wait for the day it's just data Sim and cheap as hell, and all comms is online…

      • +1

You can already do that with VoIP

  • +6

To be honest, topping up for $15 (minimum top up amount) for a second year isn't terrible value ($20 for 2 years) for minimum fuss - i.e. don't have to port out and back in, and whatever risk that entails. It just isn't the OzBargain way, is all…

    • But a true ozbargainer would do that to save $10 😂

  • +1

If you're going overseas for months or years you can park your number here and it will only cost $15 the following year per year top up.
You can use the money later when you get back in credit.

  • Does the 365 day start from the day that I activate the sim card?

  • -1

    Is this instore?

    • +2

Yes, I got my sim in store near the checkout. Make sure it is the $5 Prepaid starter pack.

There was a different sim for $15 next to it.

  • When purchasing, receiving and activating, is there any requirement to show ID or can it be anonymous?

Sorry it dumb or redundant question.

    • +1
      • Thanks mate! Wish I could have an anonymous one. Just don't want my ID and private details all over so many systems

        • Can be used to sign up as new member bonus

Lots of people use these cheap SIMs for multiple account fraud, so I guess requiring an ID to activate is one of the few ways they can help to protect honest, tax-paying companies from mass-consumer exploitation

  • +4

Note the recharge is $15 dollar unless you port out and port in again. I find amaysim cheaper in the longer run (more than 2 years) as they cost $10 recharge.

    • +2

Sign up with Aldi, Port to Amaysim a year later, then port back to Aldi.

  • +4

I got a $45 (or so, its been years) sim included with a mobile phone i bought years ago. Its on payg, and when the year expiry comes up, I use $15 of the credit to 'buy' a one month plan, then the 365 day expiry resets. I've had to message them each time to get them to extend the expiry though, wasnt automatic. Its somewhere in the critical info summary that if you buy a plan the payg resets for a year. Its kept my second sim alive for a few years with no extra payment now.

So im guessing if you get a $5 sim for the first year, then recharge $15 for the second year, then 'use' the $15 credit to 'buy' a one month plan then it would reset for another year. So $20 for 3 yrs.

  • +3

Great to use for forms etc that ask for your phone number yet don't actually need it for anything besides marketing.

    I use Amaysim personally $10/yr.

    • Does the $10 SIM include $10 of credit with Amaysim (it doesn't seem to be clear on their website)?

      • I think so? Tbh I never use the included credit so not 100%

    • +2

And that $10 credit rolls over. Mine has $54 dollars on it now. Plus got $10 for someone singing up with my code

      • Damn nice, wonder how much I've got then haha

    • Amazing is Optus though. We're all fed up of them

  • Used to only accept credit card but now allows paypal…..absolute lifesaver

  • How to I purchase a bunch of these online. Seems to allow allow one sim. Head in store ?

    • How to I purchase a bunch of these online.

You can go back to the product page and add another one to cart.

  • had no idea that 160+ votes Sim is in my cell

  • +6

I use this as a second number for only 2fa authentication for things that require it. That way I'm not using my known/main number so if it gets ported by some scam scumbag, they cant use it to reset anything.

    • +3

      that's why I hate 2fa

      • Yep, sms 2fa is rubbish, but i feel this mitigates some risk better than nothing.

    • Hi5

  • Good to know Aldi has this PAYG plan for only $5. Will be switching between Amaysim $10 and Aldi $5 every year until our youngest goes to HS.

  • This deal has been around for years. Why is it it getting so many upvotes?

  • Can I pick a number online when activating, or already been assigned a number while purchase?

    • When I activated mine, I did not get to pick a number.

Only 2 options, new number, or port over old number.

    • +2

If you really want to find a number you like, Amaysim lets you select from a list of numbers. Then port it to Aldi :)

      • Smart!

  • Looking for a new SIM for a family member for 6 months. They will mostly use it for data (youtube, maps, browsing) and a couple of local calls a day. Will this turn out cheaper than, say, getting the Boost 1-year plan (which will be useless to us after 6 months)? Or will this one be cheaper if I keep recharging for $15? How expensive is the data consumption on this Aldi plan?

  • Do you need anything other than ID to activate the $5 sim?

It seems like Vodafone/amaysim/woolies mobile you need your debit/credit card to activate it?

    • +1

Nope, dont need any debit or credit card. The sim comes with $5 credit with 365 expiry, you only need card details when recharging.

      • Excellent! It's just for a 70 year old man who loves riding his bike around the farm who refuses to pay out of his own money for a phone(aka - Dad)

Just on the website it says - For $5 PAYG Starter Pack activation

Select “Pay with credit card or PayPal” and choose to add more PAYG credit or a plan to your service. ; https://www.aldimobile.com.au/blogs/getting-started-and-sett…

  • Hasn't this deal existed for years?

  • +1

Do not turn on Mobile Data. Turn it off before you do anything.

  • Nothing new bro. $5 Sim has always been there since few years.

  • Call friend /partner let it ring once they see your # and they call you no credit used

  • Why is this a deal.. how about $4.50 bottle of milk from Coles/Woolies

  • lots of people commenting that this has been around forever and everyone knows about it… but thanks for posting because I'm obviously a mega dumba$s and never knew this existed, and this will be very very useful to me🤪

    so yeah… thanks muchly!

  • cheapest sim for sim hopping?

    • Boost sim for a profit after CB.

      • but u need to find another sim to port out and back in?

  • can you enable roaming and recieved incoming SMS/calls without additional charges/recharge ?

    • Found in aldi faq, you can recived incoming sms and no charged.
I guess switch to aldi before going overseaes and enable roaming just to recieved thise 2 factor authentications

  • Used the Aldi 365 SIM when heading overseas for 2 years to keep my Australian number. One recharge while I was away and then came back and switched over to a higher use plan. Much easier than telling family & friends a new number!

    • So were you able to receive calls & sms wherever you went overseas?

      Did you turn off data?

  • -2

How does this compare to $2 7eleven sim?

    • $3 diff

  • Can someone confirm if ALDI will also work on FIFO sites like boost n Telstra? missed those Boost deals by a few days :(
    TIA

  • Does it have free incoming for the whole 365 days validity period?
