  • (profanity) that's cheap. Thanks

    • +16

I remember my first 240GB SSD was like $200, that was 10 years ago.

      • +1

I have my first 2GB USB for $200 about 18 years ago.

        • +1

I have my first 512MB USB for $200 about 36 years ago, then just realised I'm only 32.

        • O.m.g

        • 2GB from 18 years ago? Hmm, I remember having a 32MB USB in 2002… didn't think 2GB would be available 2 years later but could be wrong?

          • @Mondorock: The first 2GB USB 2.0 stick was released in 2003. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.itweb.co.za/amp/content/Wnx…
My first one was purchased in late 2004 or early 2005 while I have my first job after uni. I have a Palm phone at time too.

            • @OMG: I remember handing in a computing related assignment in high school once by just literally giving the teacher a 80GB 3.5" hard drive haha

I was forced to buy a 1GB USB stick ($50) for the next one rip

        • Has everyone forgotten about the 1.44mb floppy disk already? So sad ;)💾

      • I used to buy 128gb and 64gb sizes because 240gb was just too ballin

What does one do with such a small SSD drive these days? Surly Windows drives are m.2?

    • What do you mean?

    • +11

Some old motherboard doesn't have m2, they can use this

    • +5

      Windows isn't that surly, surely?

      • +2

Not these days! Windows 8 build I have here is mean when they drink!

    • +3

      use as a cache drive

    • +4

There's loads of things you can build that just need a cheap and smallish boot OS drive. Like cheap NAS / home server (granted it eats up a SATA slot) or even DIY router.
Also in a serious money pinch, this would be a great budget OS drive. Won't have huge amount of spare space after windows but theres enough.

Oh and M.2 is just a form factor has nothing to do with capabilities or sizes.

      • -3

no but m.2 usually implies a gen4 nvme drive, which is lightning quick

        • +12

M.2 most definitely does not imply gen4 nvme

    • +5

      Update Grandpas laptop mostly.

    • +4

I find these great for boot drives, I have a couple of servers that I have some of my old SATA drives in then the actual data processing is done on NVME drives.

    • If you can get a M.2 drive for this price, it will be better as you can save a buck on the SATA cable.

    • +2

I am still using Ide drives in Windows to backup data. No problem at all.

    • +1

These are PERFECT for Raspberry pi

    • Upgrading an old laptop or desktop, maybe one which is used for not much more than web browsing (e.g. for elderly family member).

    • video games

    • great to add to older PCs as the boot/OS drive, most older PCs have no m.2… makes a huge improvement in boot times.

  • +4

    2 for $38 not bad at all…

  • +8

Perfect for bring old devices back to life.

  • +1

Why does it say tomorrow? I just purchased 2 now…

    • Are you meaning the expiry date? Or was there a big blue tomorrow up the top?

  • +1

    Awesome …for older w10 builds I resell… Ta OP

  • perf - i was in the market for a few 2.5's!

  • tbw?

  • +1

    Thanks Op. bought one.

  • Thanks Op, bought a few for various machines.

  • Oh wtf bought 2. For under $20 each they're worth just having in the drawer in case a drive fails.

  • +2

Perfect timing! I do need two cache drive for my Plex server

    • +1

are you running the plex server from synology nas by any chance? if so how do we do it and will it improve the performance a lot ? i am not streaming 4k, just FHD and HD movies

  • Thanks OP. Grabbed 2

  • Basically 2 for the price of 1. Can't argue with that logic.

  • +5

    Didn't need 1, grabbed 2. Thanks OP!

  • So cheap, but don't know what can I use it for.

    • just buy anyway and think of use case later!

    • +1

      storing data

  • +4

Thanks , grabbed one too although I have another 4 SSS lying around hahaha

  • +2

    Why did I buy this

  • +2

Bought 2. Looked through my purchase history and paid $110 for 2 sandisk ultra II 240 SSD only a couple of years ago.

    So cheap.

    • Same here got 2 just because so cheap. Don't need them but why not i guess.

  • is this the lowest price ever? Looks so cheap, How many I should buy?

  • can we use it as a portable SSD by inserting into a case or something

  • can i use this for my synology NAS ? (to install the operating system DSM only) yes i aware it will take one bay but i have 5 bay NAS.
also will i notice the improved performance? (currently using just normal 3.5" HDD in synology raid system

    • DSM doesn’t run off the drives in the bays so replacing them won’t make it faster. It runs off something you can’t access on the motherboard like eMMC

      • +2

Wow I just looked it up and seems like I’m super wrong

Apparently each drive you install gets a system partition which stores the DSM and settings

    36.99 showing now

    • Looks like we missed out watching the T20

  • mods havent expired it?

  • Thanks OP. Bought 2 because so cheap. Not sure what I'll do with them but always good to have spare drives.

  • Deal ended?

  • Does this have dram cache?

  • 😮‍💨 Missed…

  • +4

I bought one of these and it got delivered literally yesterday for full price ($34 ish). Unfortunately Amazon refused to credit me the difference in price and instead insisted I return it and buy a new one… But I've already installed it and installed windows etc…. Ugh! Then after the chat, it had expired. Double ugh!

It's a great fast upgrade compared to a 7200rpm HDD though, brought an old work laptop with a 7th gen i5 back to life! Snappy as now!

    • There there, have a +1

    • Just return the second drive when it gets delivered and tell them it’s the first one. They won’t know the difference.

  • +3

Thank you Ozbargainers for snapping up this deal so quick so I wouldn't have to buy the 4th SSD this month…

  • +4

Have around 10 of these amongst different desktops at work. All of them are failing one by one in the past few months.

    • How old are they?

      • +3

Just under a year, so they've been going back for warranty. Bad batch apparently but had a different model drive fail in another machine too…

        • Hmmm, care to share any relevant serial numbers so we can check against what arrives?
Just to make sure they're not trying to offload a stock lot of known bad items.
          I wouldn't put it past them…

  • +1

    Back in stock

    • Bought 2. Thx.

  • Is this drive a good idea for photo backup during a shoot or when travelling? I see a lot of feedback of USB sticks getting hot during transfer and that can't be good for the electronics.

    • Drive is ok, but the usb adpaters are usually crap or expensive. For work use, buy a proper external drive like a samsung T7 or sandisk extreme pro

      • USB enclosures are never crap or expensive. A T7 is over kill for basic photo back usage.

        • meh. I have had 2 of encloses fail ( orico and ugreen) , either the box or the janky cable.
I would not recommend them for serious work, for home use, use whatever.

  • Just received today and theres a dent in the side of it :/ Thanks auspost

  • Still haven't seen this, anyone else's get lost?

    • +1

Got it on the 5th :\
