  • hmm worth or nah

Look - the value is good, but that's the only good thing about it lol

I was with catch connect before and couldn't wait for my year to end so I could jump back to Boost. The performance and dropouts were abysmal.

      • Yeah I think I'ma hold off because it's Optus, I don't mind Vodafone or tesltra but using boost occasionally and the 5g is pretty epic

  • Pretty good deal. Literally a Boost 240GB $300 sim which we could get for $220-$240 for $100 or the Boost $200 sim for $120 with more data.

    • +16

Boost is Telstra 5G network, this is Optus 4G. So not like-for-like.

        • +2

Please elaborate…Network coverage and speed are huge factors when considering phone plans…

          • +4

@HomebrewFC: I manage 4 sims for my family and switching between Boost, Amaysim and Catch depending on the deals. It doesn't make a difference for us if it's Telstra or Optus network. I just make sure that I stay well away from Voda.

        • +4

Optus is losing customers so quickly the network should be faster soon

          • +1

@Tleyx: Been comparing their retail stores and yeah, you have flocks of people in Telstra, some in Vodafone but only a couple of customers in Optus stores even on weekends. Going to be very tough for them to recover at this point.

        • +4

It makes a world of difference if you ever leave cities.

          • @Bullion78: What is outside cities

            • +6

@Tleyx: Barren wasteland. Watch the documentary Mad Max if you'd like to learn more about life outside of the city.

              • @ihfree: Mad Max was in Altona though.

                • @plmko: That's what he said, barren wasteland.

          • @Bullion78: Backpackers and Ivan Milat.

      • I'm currently on boost but purely because it was the cheapest option at the time with volte/vowifi (wifi calling). I didn't care for telstra or the 5g (which only started recently)

Now that a bunch of mvno have them too, it really opens up the options I have. I was considering Coles mobile but this deal is really good too.

I find that telstra network is terrible in Canberra City, most of the time things take longer to load, especially in buildings. Optus works fine in the same location tho.

      • isn't Boost 5G trial ending this month?

        • +1

the trial is ending, but there are speculations it will continue as part of the normal service.

          • +1

@CodeXD: Hard to lock into 12 months on speculation

            • @Tleyx: You still get full telstra 4g service, and maybe 5g.

      • +5

I’m with Telstra and 7kms from the city and still have only 2 bars, my wife’s with catch and she has full bars. So in my experience yes, it’s not like-for-like, the catch is actually a better service where I am in Brisbane

      • boos sucks a.. tho

I grabbed the $150 200GB/365 deal back in October and have been happy with the data/call service. Catch use Optus 4G. Im based in Melbourne, VIC.

  • -5

    Optus No THANKS

    • +2

Were providers that lease the Optus network also affected by the data breach? It was my understanding that it was only Optus customers that were affected

      • +2

        No just retail optus

  • +1

Could i use catch vouchers bought on shopback for another 6 percent off?

  • This or the Kogan $90 365 deal? I hate the fact that Kogan has no app - I'm assuming Optus has better coverage than Vodafone?

    • +1

Kogan $90 deal is only 120gb data, depends on how much you use

    • +3

      There's a Kogan mobile app though ?

      • -2

AFAIK it's just a link to the web page - I'd like to have more visibility over how much data I've used

        • +3

Pretty sure it shows your data usage and balance on the app as well from when I last used it.

          • @ilikeblue: yeah it crashes for me and I'm not able to use it - other user reviews seem to report it's just a view of their web page which is what I'm forced to use as a result. I know it's silly, but I'd just like to see how much data I've used instead of a broad percentage figure

            • @Bohlin: Fair enough. I've never come close to finishing my data before so that has never been a priority for me

        • It's not. The app works well and first thing that opens with the app is your data usage and days remaining on the plan.

    • Why would you need an app? Once it’s activated correctly we never check again.

      • exactly - who cares - more bloatware for the phone and kogan tracking you or something - I wouldn't install it even if i had Kogan

    • Where is the $90 kogan deal?

  • +3

I had terrible service with my catch sim last year and ended up getting a refund from them. This is in a metro city too.

    • -1

      Do you mean coverage?

  • These guys are running on Floptus.

    • +1

      Yes, but no data breach.

  • Fabolous deal! If you use the $50 it makes it $100. Btw can you pay with gift cards?

  • Good deal but i bought boost couple of days ago. Optus reception is very bad in my area anyway.

  • What can you use the $50 credit for?

  • +1

Incredibly lame that the double data is for new services only. I should have ported out and back in.

I just recontracted with catch and only get the 120 GB (not that I'll use it).

At least I got 25% off though for recontracting. So only paid $112.5

  • Does it stack with cashrewards?

  • be careful when trying to port out from catch. i've been trying to port out from catch since 2 months ago. got tio involved and nothing's been solved till now

    • That’s bizzare, I have always ported out no problems at all. I have one kid currently on catch, will port out in a month and then report back in with one of the $30 a year bargain from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/600485

  • Bummer cannot use the Student Beans discount on top.

    • Yes, unfortunately they closed that. In the past I have used 10% off and gift cards when there used to be some discounted ones around.

  • +2

I'm in Melbourne and was on Catch previously but still had four months left on my Catch plan, and decided to swap to Boost early just because it was annoying. Consistently has no connection in the city right next to MC. Random pockets in inner city areas also have no connection e.g. Fitzroy, Collingwood, and on the Eastern Freeway. Super frustrating, you get what you pay for. Go for the Boost plans if it's still available (what I just swapped to)

    • +1

If you read above people on Telstra report the same. Optus is the second biggest provider so not like it's bargain basement.

    • What phone are you using it with? Do you get reception with boost in all those areas with the same phone?

Some phones, especially Chinese brand like xiaomi have limited 4g bands, so if optus runs it in that area, you'll pretty much have limited network reception.

      • Pixel 3XL and yep reception works for Boost in those areas

  • If I'm a current customer can I port out and back in to get this deal?

    • yes

      • How long do you have to port out before you’re considered a new customer?

        • I've ported out to Aldi and straight back previously.

  • Guys will it work if I make a new catch account, even if im already with catch?

  • Hi OP, have seen any more of the Kogan sales they had previously (3 months deals?) thanks

  • New Catch customers or new catch connect customers? Anyone knows? Thanks!

    • I think it’s new catch connect so as long as it’s a new mobile number or porting from a different provider. It says “new services only”.

  • Has anyone who bought this deal managed to activate it receive the $50 Catch credit? How's this supposed to be done?

  • hey just wondering if anyone know when the catch credit will show up?

  • Has anyone got the credit? I havent yet.

  • Seems like the credit comes on 13/1/23?

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/n/10/735910x.jpg?h=ac65fecc

    • I spoke with Catch about this and they told me it would be credited by the 13th. So hopefully it's in by tomorrow!

      • I got it today but it seems like a generic code? very odd. It came to my email.
