Ryzen zen3 5600 should be the base line CPU for anyone buying AM4 in 2022 .. we are almost into 2023

Give the 3600 a miss.. unless planing to use it as a stop gab before upgrading to a faster chip

The 5600 is over 30% better in games and the 5800x3d is 45% faster.. thats like a whole GPU upgrade from just the CPU

      • +13

That's not how cpu usage work. You're either gonna be bottlenecked by cpu, or by gpu. If you're bound by gpu, it doesn't matter how good of a cpu you have, it will remain the same performance. It's also visa versa.

The 3600 should be fine for most application. If the son needs something better, they would've mentioned it.

That being said, 5600 is future proofing. It's just that, unless you're also getting a better gpu right now, it's kinda pointless. By the time you need to upgrade from, say, the 6600xt, you'll need a new cpu altogether.

I have a R5 3600 and it works as good as ever with my RX5700XT - I doubt that even a Ryzen 9 would make any difference in game that are not pushing ridiculous FPS (100+).

I'd wager that adding a 6800XT or 3080Ti would make a much more drastic improvement and even then going from aa R 5 3600 to 'something higher' would make fkc all difference in performance.

          • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: Well, you're right that your pairing is perfectly fine. And you're right, getting a 6800xt will be the more notable improvement.

But, just to be clear, the 5600 (or 5800x3d) do matter for gaming, even with the 5700xt. But only for specific games, like flight sim or minecraft with distant horizon mods.

            • @Wonderfool: Yeah i've updated my initial response by adding further correspondence… like I said, I am being biased by the fact that I have this 'budget build', so the R 5 3600 is very fine by my standards.. but if you're looking at spending over 3.5 grand on a computer, then you'd obviously go for a R 9 / 3080Ti/6800XT/4080/7800xt type build..

        • +1

A 6600XT is about as strong as the 5700XT, and I doubt it a R 5 5600 would squeeze any more performance out of it than a R 5 3600.

Maybe if he upgrades to a 7700 XT or something..

I've honestly ever run into GPU bottlenecks, where it's hitting 60 fps max on 3440x1440 and ultra settings with the GPU screaming at 225-250 watts lol…

If that GPU was replaced with a 3080Ti that would be a different story, primarily because i would no longer be on a strict budget.

I guess I am just trying to 'prove that I am right', but I really doubt that anybody will notice much of an improvement even going from a 2600 to a 5600, unless they have a heavy, heavy duty GPU - i.e., 3080ti, 6800xt, 6900XT..

Obviously anybody building a PC with a nest gen 4080, 4090, 7800xt, 7900xt will be going all out on the CPU as well.

        • I just build a gaming computers few weeks ago, I have watched a lot of reviews/benchmark before choosing parts. Even a GPU is not bottlenecked by CPU, but you get different fps. check this out fps comparison of 3600 vs 5600 https://youtu.be/Gu2EbuYYvKM (can skip to 2:10 or 11:50), they tested it with 6600xt) or https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i5-13600k/19.h…. 3600 runs hotter and consume more power as well, unless you on very tight budget, get 5600. The extra $60 is not wasted by the fps improved and power saving.

      • yeah grab a 5800x3d to go with the 6600xt gifted for his son that'll be played most likely 1080p@60fps
        great advice
        obligatory /s

Man this is so much CPU for the money

    • +2

Yep, I paid $319 in Nov 2020 but I think there was a Zippay promo or something

  • +1

    Crazy value

  • +3

    5600x for >$150 thanks

    • +3

Or 5600 that performs the same in games.

  • +5

    Damn, I remember paying $300 in 2020.

    • +2

      Same. At least I didn't pay $1500+ for 3060ti in 2020.

      • +1

I'd just paid 1250 for a Intel Nuc x15 with a 3060 140 watt model - the performance is the same as a desktop 3060 and 2070 super.. I'd like to think that i snagged a bargain, but you never know..

  • Got an i5-12400F a week ago, and seen so many AMD deals on here that look to be way better value.

    • No way. This is showing its age now, even bottle necking at 4k.

12400 is king for value. It's regularly smashing the 3600.

good to know! been a beast for me so far, especially since my usage is mostly productivity.

        • Definitely. It's the value king now. Has been for a while. Inevitably the 13th gen equivalent SHOULD beat it though.

  • Would this bottleneck a 6900 xt?

    • +1

1080p gaming yes, 4K gaming, probably not. You have a 1080p 240Hz or better gaming monitor?

      • Nah 144hz ultra wide 1440p

Just doing some research an says I'll have a 42% CPU bottleneck lol that's not good. Would 5600 be the best value worthwhile upgrade? My 6900xt arrives this week

        • +1

          5600/5700X + 6900xt are a good combo.. 5800X3D would be better

          • @vid_ghost: It's actually a Sapphire Nitro Extreme Edition 6900xt with a binned chip so probably equivalent to 6950xt or even slightly faster so I'd probably need to go 5800x3D

          • @vid_ghost: I just did the bottleneck calculator on pc build. Com and even for 5800x3d and 6950xt on 3440x1440 on Warzone it still says 25% CPU bottleneck. Lol

      • It's starting to bottle neck many 4k games now

  • Just got a 5600g for $163 posted using these codes, thanks a bunch

Good price to performance ratio for the AM4 AMD Ryzen 5 3600.

I would be looking at the Ryzen 5 5500 instead.

It's the same price and has the same performance on average, but it includes UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection which you can easily sell for ~$40 making it far better price to performance compared to the 3600.

Yes, it lacks PCIe 4.0 support, but if you're looking at CPUs at these price points then those kinds of SSDs likely weren't going to be in your build anyway.

    Ryzen 5 5500 vs. Ryzen 5 3600, Most Affordable Zen 3 Worth It? 21 Game Benchmark, 1080p & 1440p

Another option would be to pay the extra $60 to go for a 5600 instead of the 3600. Sell Uncharted for ~$40 and the 5600 then effectively only costs ~$20 more than the 3600.

  • +1

This price almost entirely negates the point of buying used parts holy shit. Waiting for this to happen to gpus so I can buy a 2080ti for $200..

    • Are you sure that a brand new 2080Ti would cost that much though? These CPUs only cost $300 2 years ago.. by that logic a 2080Ti would cost 350 minimum and by that time you'd WANT to spend extra on a 3080Ti minimum… lol
