  • Oh man, I need this for film footage storage, so I bought two… while waiting for JB to answer their chats, to be told that they would not price match/beat… only to tell me they can't do it because of reduced/limited stock, both of my cart items turned to back order… but the order is in… just have to wait until Dec for delivery :-/

  • Am I just paranoid, too scared of storing 12 TB of data on a hard drive with no redundancy?

    • +5

It's not just redundancy but need backups.

    • I buy two of them, for redundancy

    • +1

You absolutely should not be storing any data on a single hard drive with no redundancy. All drives die eventually - one day that data will be gone.

Buy multiple drives and take backups.

      • Of course you should. That is exactly what they are for. You just have to be willing to lose it all.

        • That is exactly what they are for.

They're for storing data. But they don't do that reliably, because they all fail - maybe tomorrow, maybe in 5 years, maybe in 10 years. But they WILL fail !

You just have to be willing to lose it all.

No, you just take backups šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

      • depend on how important is the data

  • +2

I price matched in store w $30 perks and 10% off Him GC, works out to be $21/tb. Chat bot and hefty rain in Melb wont stop Ozb

  • +1

i just need cheap 3.5" internal 4TB.. come on blackfriday

    • +1

What's your use case for this drive ?
For small capacities like this, SSD is better in every measurable way - in most cases the only reason to still buy mechanical drives is for large capacities.

      • +1

for my 4 bays NAS.. it has one more empty slot, the rest of the drives are 4TB… it runs synology RAID so if i get say 12TB, most of those will be inaccessible anyway. wasted.
unless, i change all the drive to 12TB (or somewhere close, not like 4TB 4TB and then jump to 12TB).
and right now thanks to switch game files, i kind of need more storage but not that urgent

i wish someone can sell me cheap 4TB but afraid of buying second hand HDD.
brand new still around $120 i will hold as long as i can

        • +1

This is the time to sell your existing 3 drives and buy a single 16TB drive.
Then you've got 16TB of storage and three remaining bays to expand into.

          Don't forget backups !

          • @Nom: Sorry 4x16tb is way too much storage…and
One single 16tb means no raid…

            • +2

@CyberMurning: There's no such thing as "way too much storage".
I have thousands of Linux ISOs going back years!

              • @xylarr: well me too until recently with nbn… now i stream linux isos

              • +1

@xylarr: I thought I had enough storage. Then I started getting HD Linux ISOs. I'll probably move to QHD Linux ISO eventually. Never enough storage.

      • Are you familiar with the price of a 4tb ssd?

        • more than $450 :D

        • Yes they've been below $100 per TB multiple times. I use 3 X 4TB 860 QVO drives in RAID0 as a bulk storage drive, and I paid about 1K in total. They're so so so much nicer than mechanical drives.

          • @Nom: 4x the price though, and for being in a NAS, it really doesn't matter if SSD or mechanical

      • There is one very big measure that SSD is not better in, $/TB. And for a lot of people that measure trumps all the others.

      • 4tb ssd? who can afford that..

Nice one, your an absolute legend OP! Just picked up two of these from my local. Been waiting for this week to stock up on a few drives since space has started to get a bit scarce for me.

Can these be classified as their Black Friday deals? I don't particularly know of how all the Black Friday / Cyber Monday stuff works over here but must say I'm stoked at being able to pick these up at under $25 a T/B even if it's a WD drive. I honestly almost cracked last week at the 10tb $329 WD drive at Officeworks, pretty relieved I held on.

I've been holding off for Black Friday for a while now and was hoping to get at least two 16tb drives for $800. Fingers crossed Amazon delivers since I just barely missed out on that incredible Prime Day deal we had earlier.

    • +4

It was purely chance I noticed it too, I use these drives as my main form of storage in my unraid server and noticed I was starting to run a little short myself. The deal was so good I thought it may be a pricing error for a lower size.
I'm glad to have given the gift of bytes!

    • +3

I am hoping we go back to the 350ish for the 18TB

      • Yeah me too, that would be an absolute dream if I could get two of those for $350 each. I think I would be set good and proper for a while after that. Fingers crossed!

  • +3

Thanks, $22.4/TB is awesome! Matched in JBHIFI store plus $30 perk. Can perks stack? I forgot about my unused $10 one can't stack

    • Yeah I pricematched with the $30 off too, I did it in store no problems.

  • +1

Why do people go these over exos straight out of hongkong from EastDigital that seems to also be popular? eg. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/284836482791 16TB for $345 delivered $21.56 / TB

Just because officeworks/local? Is there much effort to shuck?

    • +5

Shucking is easy if you know what you're doing. If you're careful you can shuck them without damage to the casing and repack the drive in event of needing to make a warranty claim.

As for why you would get these. Less potential for shipping damage, local warranty cover, and speed of access. I grabbed one of these because I ran short and didn't plan my NAS expansion properly, this will tie me over while waiting for the next drive to come from whatever deal I see fit.

      • You don't think it got damaged when it went from China to distributor to Officeworks?

        • +1

Different packing method and packaging. There's less risk in bulk packaging, not that there is no risk just that the items are packaged specifically for shipping in wholesale settings.

    • There is a current OzBargain group buy that neology has organised. The 16tb EXOS is ~$17/tb through the group buy. That price is enough to make me try Seagate again.

  • really concerned about the noise, has anyone used one in an nr200p case?

    • this is probably the quietest of all drives, I run 6x 24/7

  • Crazy price!
Currently have 2x shucked 8TB drives in my Synology 920+.
$300 was the magic number but it would only get me the 8TB shucksters earlier this year.

Im no closer to filling them but this sure does look attractive!

Should i buy and swap them out?

    • -4

You should be using Seagate Ironwolfs or WD Red drives for a NAS. This drive is not designed for use in a NAS and it will fail a lot sooner. A NAS drive is designed to run for weeks on end, while a desktop HDD can only read and write data for hours at a time.

      • No. These are server drives, not desktop drives.

  • Great price! Just picked up the last two at OW South Melbourne.

    • I bought one in OW online, got ready for collection email, went to JB and bought another wiith match and perks. Went to OW, collected and returned first in one swoop. Redundancy matters lol

  • I picked one up at my local Officeworks this arvo! Great deal. My 10TB died a few months back, so was on the lookout for a replacement.

  • thanks OP! bought 2, but Iā€™m hoping to get JB to price match when they open today

  • Thanks OB, bought one yesterday from OW but wanted to try taking advantage of JB price match/$30 perk offer.. I had success in store at JB Elizabeth st melb just now… Pretty happy

  • The JB rep on the phone would not price match as he said that OW was only providing limited stock.

    • +2

Yeah they aren't doing it on live chat or phone due to this excuse. But in store it worked for me as per others.

  • +1

Just grabbed the last stock at OW Campbelltown.

    Thanks OP

  • OOS

  • Bought one Gregory Hills Officeworks. Thanks so much OP!

  • Went a bit mental and bought 3! lol
Do you need to tape over the power connector pin to complete the shuck?

    • +1

Not always, try it out first, I've never needed to

    • most likely, or just use molex to sata

  • +1

If you guys are lucky there are still a couple stores here in Melbourne that have them in stock. Mentone and Kew if anyone's close by. You might even be able to still get JB to price match them in store still depending on how far away they are from the store that has stock.

It was a great deal and surprisingly so coming from Officeworks. It will tide me over while I wait to get at 16 or higher tb drive from Amazon on Black Friday.

  • Seems back in stores again…

  • +1

Appears to be back on sale at JB - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/737512

  • -1

Grabbed 2 for click and collect, all the stores around me had stock. Still OOO for delivery though. Not sure if the deal should be re-opened or someone should post another? (I'm too lazy)

  • Thanks OP.
Grabbed one via JB live chat price match - very easy.
