iPhone 8 is currently the cutoff for the latest iOS 16, so it could be the last or possibly receive the next major update.

for $120 more, you are getting a newer, faster phone with a better camera and bigger screen.

SE will be faster for sure. But XR will still have far better battery life. People buying refurbished are probably less influenced by processing power after a certain extent at which point the XR will probably provide a more balanced experience. I bought the XR for $399 a few weeks ago from Coles and I won't sweat over $60 as its been a pretty good experience as a secondary phone to my iPhone 13 apart from camera and other slight refinements is essentially the same.
the XR is the sweetspot in terms of price at the moment, it'll do everything except 5G

How do you know the condition of a Refurbished Phone until you have already paid and then open the box?
Ask this to the store manager. Open in front of him. If you're not happy to proceed with transaction based on visible condition let them know and hopefully they will reciprocate.

Perhaps, but they are sold as "premium refurb" so I assume when it was traded it was in decent shape to begin with. I've bought a couple, never any issues.
