ATX 3.0 Power Supply Questions

Hi guys,

I was hoping the ones that are more technically inclined could help me out with this question.

So, I recently purchased this Super Flower Leadex SE 1000W platinum PSU from this deal:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/726203.

And, I noticed this deal crop up for the MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 PSU : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/737417.

I understand there is a rating difference, platinum vs gold, and also the ATX 3.0 difference. What are the other differences?

Also which one would you guys choose say you are looking at getting a 4090 down the track when they are more affordable?

TIA!

My 4090 runs on a sf750 plat Corsair power supply, no issues. Cable is ugly but I don’t mind
If your keen on buying quality start googling third party reviews of power supplies, as I’m aware it’s more complicated than gold/plat/titanium ratings.

Good choice on the Super Flower

You can see the full list of changes from ATX 2.4 to ATX 3.0 here - https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-atx-v3-psu-standard - and outside of the new 12VHPWR cable, the most important being

Increased tolerance for high power spikes, for the compatible PSU platforms. Up to 200% of the PSU's rated power for 100μs with a 10% duty cycle.

NVIDIA and Intel are partners in crime with this new standard because for their top end, they both cannot manage their TDP's properly when their GPU's and CPU's go "boost" and "turbo". NVIDIA in particular can massively exceed TDP for a very short amount of time in a "transient spike", tripping the PSU and shutting down the PC

If you were buying completely new today and plan to use any RTX 40 series in the future, you would definitely choose an ATX 3.0 PSU

Currently, the new AMD cards don't use the connector so a quality ATX 2.4 will continue to run fine there

Once the standard matures and NVIDIA fixes the melting cables issue etc, AMD will likely use 12VHPWR for the RDNA3 refresh or RDNA4

If you buy a 1.3KW Platinum ATX 2.4 unit at a good price like this, these units will easily run a 4090 now with the adapter cable

be quiet! also has some further info on their compatibility page
