Techy types should be aware that 5G Home Broadband uses CG-NAT. Carrier-grade NAT (Network Address Translation) is a type of network that assigns services with a private IP address, instead of a dynamic public IP address. Our network will then translate that private address into a public address. This means that the following items (which depend on internal NAT) will not work on 5G Home Broadband:

  • Port forwarding
  • Hosting web, email or file servers internally
  • Smart Home systems (e.g. accessing security camera footage remotely, home automation and printers)
  • Remote Access (i.e. accessing your home computer or devices from another location)

Carrier-Grade NAT can give you a strict NAT with some online games.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2022

  • Did anyone try TPG 5G? I am still happy with OPTUS 4G home. Normally get 80-120mbps download speed and 10mbps upload speed

    • +10

I'm using TPG 5G for last 3-4 months, my experience is not good.
I had TPG NBN which was seamless. used for 5 years plus.

i found issue with evening buffering, modem stability, some sites not working or works so slow that i move to phone network and some weird experience my google home setup and chrome-cast doesn't work using 5g modem wifi network.

      • +10

I've had a flyer on my desk for a week - the price kept me interested but if it isn't at least as stable as NBN then what's the point. Life's just too short to be problem solving internet issues.

        • I'd happily pay triple for the same rated speeds to not have to deal with that headache.

        • +1

Because of the flyer I signed up last month.
Network speed was too fluctuated even evening time 20/10 mbps. (My contract was 100/20 mbps)
I just send my termination form because of this promotion.

      • +3

Same for me. Drop outs and terrible latency. Don't even think of trying to game on this connection. I lasted 2 months before going back to NBN.

    • +1

How do you get 80mbps. They only seem to offer 25mbps capped 4g?

      • I too would like to know since my fttn only gets me ~30mpbs and voda 4g isn’t any better

      • Not a new plan, OPTUS didn't limit speeds back in 2020. Now they are playing dog and pony on the speed limit. 25mbps is useless

        • So this dog and pony you speak of, are they responsible for limiting the speed?

    • Me too. Floptus 4g gives me good speeds. Friday night 8.20 I got 60 down and 20 up but I have had speed upwards of 200 down and 30 to 40 up. Using Ookla Speed test on Pixel 6. Modem is the Huawei B818.

I have considered TPG since the Optus debacle, but I am paying a minimum fee each month for 4g and read some terrible reviews of TPG.

FWIW I am around Chatswood NSW. Good line of sight to a tower.

      • had the same modem, i was getting over 100mbps with both optus and vodafone. i changed the settings to only connect to a certain band, but the main reason i had really good speeds was the area where i was, no congestion and close to the tower.

    • Please stay away. My max speed is 30 Mbps on 100 Mbps plan. Technical support cannot help with anything. 3 calls and nothing is sorted.

  • +4

    Nothing for existing customers :(

    • +5

Just the usual premium service and quality you’ve grown to love!

      • +1

Please tell me you work in PR.

    • +1

Well yeah, they already have your money.

    • +1

I rang up my provider Internode (part of the TPG family) a couple of months back asking about their half price 6 months NBN deal for new customers. I have been with Internode for over a decade. They set me up as a new customer (including new userid) so I could get the discount :-)

  • is this plan good enough or similar to NBN in terms of multi-stream on different devices at the same time

  • IS TPG good?

    • +20

      They’re Pretty Good.

      • +2

unless u ever want to leave.. the 30 days written notice thing turned me off them forever

        • +4

          That's Poor Garbage.

        • +2

I left TPG in October, you can cancel through the TPG web form(https://imgur.com/a/KW7lX2H). It will take you less than 1 min to give the 30 days notice.

          • +2

@jaydee4: Yes i did that too, when i said written notice i meant through their form. Sure, you can fill out the form quickly, but you still have to wait 30 days. Nobody else does this.

Also, filling out the form doesnt initiate the process. Filling out the form means at some point in the next few days they will phone you and pester you to not leave before considering actioning your request, all done from a call centre in Philippines too of course. Great customer service.

            • +1

              @Iggemo:

              Nobody else does this.

Exetel also do 30 day cancelletion

              • @Bunsen: another one to avoid, thanks lol

  • How can TPG afford to sell unlimited data 5G for such a price?.

    • +1

coz they limit the max speed. 4G can get 120mbps as normal.

      • -1

Even 100Mbps at $64.99 is cheaper than what i can get on NBN 100Mbps through Aussie Broadband. As i was saying how can TPG sell a 100Mbps plan cheaper through 5G than most NBN providers at the same speed. NBN must be such a rip off.

        • NBN and wireless broadband have always been different. In daily use I can't feel a difference, the wireless is stable most of the time.

        • +1

Well, NBN corporation charges like $40 for your NBN connection to your retailer - Aussie - whom has to incorporate this cost in your nbn price or else they go broke.

TPG does not pay NBN this fee, it invested in the towers and spectrum. With all that sunk cost, and spare capacity it may as well dish out cheap plans for you to use.

    • +3

Whilst the wholesale NBN price is one factor, the other is that 5G connectivity is never going to be as reliable or performant as a dedicated fibre connection.

Rolling out a dedicated fibre networks to the home is expensive, but I think most people will see the value in having dedicated fixed line internet and will pay more.

In any case, 5G networks would fall over in their current state if more than 20% of a suburb signed up. If they really wanted to compete with NBN, they TPG/Optus/Telstra would have to build 5G sites (microcells) very densely throughout suburbs, which would require running lots of fibre, which would cost lots of money.

Fixed wireless 5G is a bit of a dead horse. For it to truely complete with NBN's network, it would need a costly network build out, which would make it significantly more expensive.

  • I'm using the network availability checker on the website. Why it doesn't seem like the 5G service is available in most Sydney area e.g. Parramatta, Eastwood, Chatswood etc? it says NBN is available.
Or does it mean it will still work?

    • +1

Maybe maybe not. They are only offering it in areas where there is spare 5G capacity. So just because you get 5G on your phone, doesn’t mean there is 5G home for you, they don’t wanna compromise mobile user experience.

      • Bugger, I'm so waiting for this wireless home internet rollout to be sooner!

  • +1

With a free modem and first month, the cost of the first 6 months is $149.99, so that averages $25pm? Or for the faster service, $27.08pm?
Shut up and take my money

    • In a few weeks..

shut up and take my complaints TPG!

  • +1

how do they determine whether an address has service availability, reason I ask is I know where the tower is and if I check random addresses on the street some show as service available some don't but it's not correlated to distance from the tower

    • +1

I asked a similar question to an Optus engineer I know, when I had Optus 4G internet (that was 2017-18). He said that the telcos were traditionally conservative when it came to rolling out those services and they did not want everyone in one cluster to sign up at once, for fear of slowing down the speeds.
I suspect it is less of a problem now, with so many customers transitioning to 5G

      • +1

I mean I could use a 'friends' address nearby & get such a service & they would be unlikely to know, it's just strange they don't limit the actual users in the area a tower is situated rather than specific addresses if that is the case

    • Is based on simulation software that predicts the load of the system. With that, you can overlap with maps and check where you will have coverage and QoS. Also, not all towers have the same technology. Finally, the behaviour of the antennas is nos the best when you are so close.

      • suspect it's the software as one address is directly below the tower and is available but others are more random but within sight

  • How’s the ping for online games like Dota 2?

    • +1

Not sure… I’m still waiting for the reply

    • I was unable to game (cod) on this connection.

    • If it is similar to Optus 5G Home, you are looking at around 20. Playable, but not ideal

    • I would not get a 5G internet service if your plan is to play games, you'll get lag spikes and drop outs.

  • +1

NBN Vs 5G? Pros 'n' Cons please. Different setup compared to NBN? Existing router compatible with 5G? Which format is more reliable? Thanks.

    • I had Telstra 5G for a month. They supplied the modem, I connected my router (Apple Airport Gen 6). Worked like a charm, crazy speeds became addictive. Neither more or less reliable that my previous NBN setup

    • If you are not having issues with NBN, then stick to it. 5G is great when it works, but they are always "working on upgrading the towers" so you get dropouts every so often. Excellent for streaming, but ok for gaming. Ping is around 20 for me on Optus 5G, 500m from the nearest tower.

      Also, no static IP

  • 5G not available in my area!!!!Can I still sign-up connect to 4G until 5G available???

  • Great deal.. I used to have TPG 5G at my old address few months ago. Used to get about 200/20 on the 100Mbps plan. I don't think they limit it to 100 unless its changed since then.

    • I got the same! 200/20 for the first free month trial then all the problems began haha.

  • You couldn't pay me enough to go with TPG again.

  • It's inconsistent…line drops out at times. When it works, it's a dream service.

  • +4

I am using iinet 5G which is technically the same as TPG 5G.
Upload is around 10Mbps and Download is around 120Mbps.
You MUST be behind CGNAT but with NBN you can have your own IP.
It is not a deal breaker. However, it has way too many random dropouts throughout the day (It is Voda 5G so maybe that's why…).
I am switching back to NBN now. Not recommended.

  • +2

TPG 5G doesn't work with smart home systems and remoate access, plus it is not good for gaming. Will pass it even the price is so tempting.

    • Because it's on CG-NAT? Is it possible to opt out?

      • +2

"Techy types should be aware that 5G Home Broadband uses CG-NAT … If you need [CG-NAT], 5G Home Broadband won’t be the right fit for you".
Not surprising, but at least they are straight-forward about it.

    • Does this mean that I wouldn't be able to use a RING Doorbell? That's the only "smart home system" I currently have

      • +1

You can still use your Ring doorbell - Where you might be limited is if you're running a home server for your smart home, and you want to access it remotely.

      • 5ghz wifi is not the same as 5G mobile

  • This product is not available at your address. :-(

  • Tried their 100mbps 5G, only getting 30 mb around my address at morning.

    • You must be in a fringe signal area. But the irony is that's still faster than what most people on FTTN are getting. But then again those on FTTN don't have to put up with insanely terrible ping latency and so can actually play online gaming.

      • I cancel my 5G on the day it arrives and tell them that I decide to quit their NBN for cheaper and faster option.
However they offered my 250mbps for 84.99 per month forever plan now which I take..

        • 250mbps for 84.99 per month.

Please care to elaborate the strategy/circumstance you used on how this came about? Currently I'm paying $99.99/month (lifetime rate) for an Ultrafast plan which upon checking I think is now on 450Mbps (was 250Mbps). If I can get it cheaper per month then I would surely give it a go and its time to hassle/haggle with them again . Thanks.

      • That is just factually incorrect, majority of FTTN connections can do >50Mbps.

Ref page 4 for FTTN performance stats: https://www.accc.gov.au/system/files/MBA%2018%20report%209%2…

  • Hi everyone,
I recently tried this a few months ago. I had the 100mbps unlimited 5G plan.
I was actually calling them to send me a new modem for the NBN because the one they sent me was faulty.
They instead told me "Oh why not try our 5G, same speed and cheaper", so I took the bait and switched.
The first month was free and boy it was really fast, download speeds were 190++ eventhough plan was just 100.
Still, it was horrible for gaming, the lag is insane. NBN ping was around 15ms, with 5G it was jumping from anywhere between 150ms to 500ms.
And then the free month was done and the problems began. Internet kept dropping, "Connected but no internet access", speeds lower than 7mbps, you name the issue, we had it.
Called TPG, cancelled it, went with Superloop NBN and cant be happier.
    Stay away from this garbage.

    • Yeah the problem is the latency through mobile wireless. It's not right for gaming. Only good for downloads and uploads.

      • Is it good for Zoom and Netflix ?

        • Possibly.

        • yes, mine works flawlessly for 4K steaming on multiple devices. gaming can get choppy.

          • @pformag: Any issue with chromecast?

            • @[Deactivated]: Nope, I'm even using a free foxtel now box in 1 room, and that works also.

    • 15ms is still pretty bad for gaming. Optus 5G was not great for gaming on 20ms. NBN should be 3-4ms.

  • +3

Just sharing my own experience of replacing NBN with 5G.

I have a Telstra 5G plan for my home internet. I get download speeds between 5Mbps and 150Mbps.

My ping when playing Rocket League at peak times is terrible to the point of rendering it impossible to play. This is every evening.

When it's good, it's great, when it's not it's terrible. I actually am going to switch back to the 40/10 NBN I can get.

    • Why does it fluctuate between great and terrible?
The signal strength isn't fixed? It changes during the day (slows down during peak hours)?
Or does the signal strength vary significantly depending on your exact location in your house (slows down because you are too far from the tower)?

      • I have a nighthawk M5 connected to a Deco M9 mesh wifi system. So nothing changes from my end.

        It's congestion.

    • thank you for this info. literally the only thing i need this for is work, streaming and rocket league, was contemplating jumping off Aussie Broadband NBN, as it is sometimes lagging still, but it seems like it won't be worth it.

  • Boom! Awesome offer indeed!

  • Last time i was with tpg broadband and moved elsewhere they hit me with outgoing fees.

  • Yeah don't get this if you're into online gaming. Mobile broadband can't offer low ping latency instead it's terrible for that plus you're stuck behind CG-NAT no matter what.

Fixed wired NBN is the only option i know of for low pings through online gaming.

  • This must be what's causing the new Covid wave

  • I have replaced NBN FTTB with Optus 5G for almost two years now.

Couldn't be happier, consistently getting 600Mbps+/50Mbps+ off peak.

Cloud gaming on Game Pass and Geforce Now are smooth as.

For $70 per month, it is a no brainer.

It's a shame that free Optus Sports is replaced with discounted Optus Sports.

  • Recently my TPG FTTB seems slower. Is there something I can do with the internet speed? Especially upload speed.

    • experience since they increased the price has been terrible. 3 dropouts in a month until one day it didnt reconnect for hours. rang to complain, they rang some 'tests' and they blamed the modem and that it is probably failing (their modem too)…i blasted them.
miraculously everything is working fine again 1 day later.
ive been with them since the first adsl plans nearly 20years ago now. that was the first time i wanted to leave, just got to figure out were to go.

  • Given that the 6 month price is even lower than what they are offering at Felix, I wonder what their threshold for booting people will be. (Felix being a $35/m "unlimited" talk/data sim on the same network, throttled to 20mbit)

Perhaps they'll be a bit more lenient given that it's a 5G service rather than LTE. Maybe.

    • Felix is supposed to be unlimited for phone use and they only boot for unlimited household use, TPG doesn't have that right and would be under the standard home internet fair use amount.

I've used as much as 6TB elsewhere for home internet, any less isn't really unlimited.

  • Tried TPG 4G for 5months, I got full reception on 4G modem, down speed I got max 20mbits and 2mbits for uplaod. Pretty shit for what you pay. cannot be an option for nbn even I do not like it due to frequent maintenance outage.

PS: I am surrounded with 5G excluding 500mt radius within my home :/

  • Is Whatsapp Call good using 5G? sometimes we are getting frequent drop in connection everytime mom make Whatsapp phone calls but Internet is working fine (can stream and browse ok).

  • LOL $30 a month that's sick price honestly.

NBN gonna be loosing a lot of customers

    • Nah. Mobile broadband is crap for things like online gaming. That's where fixed broadband shines.

  • Any phone feature like porting current landline phone number ?.
