Good price. Still have a netgear R7000 going strong.

$129 @ Umart for AX53U, so RRP reference a bit far fetched.

Talk to Amazon and ASUS please.

    This or rt-ax54hp?

    • Yeah. I want to know this too. I could get thr ax54hp with jb perks for $79. I suspect Amazon is matching the JB one.

      • Would love to know this too to upgrade my parents' setup

    • Whichever can use vanilla Openwrt, so probably this one IIRC.

  • Don't see this model for Merlin. Maybe compatible with other Merlin suppported routers.

    • true
      1. no Merlin
      2. low dBm (low signal strength)

      • You get what you pay for. I wouldnt buy this as the main router. However it would be good for aimesh.

        • If I do want a budget main router to replace a pretty old ISP router, Is there anything better near this price?

    • +1

      It only has openwrt

  • Sorry Noob query what can i buy with this to create a mesh at home. I only need 1 extender and not a gaming home will be used for video watching mainly for netflix and prime

    • +1

Ai-mesh was not supported originally when ax53u got just released. The latest firmware supports it but I saw someone said it is only supported between ax53u. The brand of hardwares it uses is not the same as all other ASUS ones, maybe that’s the reason?

I have the same plan so bought two of them and they arrived yesterday and found with a single one, the wifi signal is already good enough to cover a 2-story house (450sm)

      • +2

I just bought this and It's paired with my AX88U for AIMesh.

      • I got the 55 model this week, in my house, won't come close to covering it. Double story town house, around 200m.

        • +2

Yes, RT-AX55's Wifi is weaker compare to AX53U

          https://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rt-ax55-review/

          • @panterali: Hmm didn't know. Thanks.

          • @panterali: is the RT-AX86U a big bump up in strength of signal? one of those vs 2 x AX55's spread out?

            • @SaberX: I’ve never used RT-AX86u, but in theory two Camry’s should let you drive longer than a Mercedes C class :)

As WiFi6 won’t make huge difference for most people, and AX86 is not on sale atm, may be get a AC86u/AC68u + AX53u/AX55 to get better value for money.

              • @panterali: Thanks. Does the AX86U ever go on sale below $400?

2 X ax55 units seems good but they're the entry level Asus routers right? Do you still recommend a better primary router meshed with an ax55 than 2 X ax55s?

                • @SaberX: Depends on the use case and there will be standard answer. If you only have 2-3 person and around 10 devices connected to the network and all are not heavy users, I think 2 x AX55 (or even 1 depends on the size of the place) should just work fine. Otherwise, just get a high-end model as the main router.

          • @panterali: Where does it say AX55's wifi is weaker than the AX53U? The review is comparing the AX55 with AX56U, not the cheaper AX53U.

  • Signal Big improve than my uplink vr 400?
    Does this Asus support fttn?

    • You'll need a modem as well. Bridge an existing and turn off existing wifi.

If it sounds to complicated, I'd suggest you just look for a modem router combo.

  • Can I use this for nbn hfc modem?

    • +3

Plug in the Asus to the nbn NTD modem.

  • Is this good enough for 500-1gbit connections?

  • Can AIMesh work with a Lan connection? The new place has LAN ports throughout and want to connect this to the far side of the house via LAN to boost the Wifi.

    • Yep certainly can. Also far more preferable.

    • Short answer: Yes. It’s called Ethernet backhaul

  • RT-AX53U ($89) or ASUS RT-AX54HP ($89) or the ASUS RT-AX55 ($115) ?

I currently have an RT-AC68U as my main router, but I need to replace another junk router upstairs for second wifi connection (connected to main router via Ethernet)

    I have FTTP

Also should I move this new router as the main router, and move the RT-AC68U upstairs?

I'll be using Ethernet Backhaul Mesh

    • +1

      Comparison here

I'm using the RT-AX54HP as node and TUF AX3000 as my main router. Working well so far.

      • Does 54HP work in AI Mesh?

        • Out of the box, no. You have to update the firmware first. But after that, it will work.

          • @tachyon: Thanks decided on the AX55 for the quad core CPU

    • +2

AC68U should still be used as main router and I'd add an AX53U as the client as it has better WiFi signal. And as it will used as client, CPU is not as important as the main one.

      P.S. AX55's Wifi is weak. See https://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rt-ax55-review/

      • Interesting I'll have a read
edit: Review says it's a fine router but worth spending the extra for a RT-AX56U if you can - which is about double the price

      • Would you advise getting the AX53U over the AX55? What about AX54HP?

        • That was my decision after reading reviews for both ax53u and ax55. We have less than 10 connected devices all the time and don’t play online games, so it works just fine. If you have more devices, maybe ax55 will work better overall.

I think AX54HP is just released and can’t find any reviews atm. I’d stay away from it for now.

Maybe got both ax53u and ax55 then use the ax53u for some time and if it is good, keep it and return the 55. Or if it doesn’t work the way you like, return 53u and keep the 55 :)

          • @panterali: That was my decision after reading reviews for both ax53u and ax55.

Once again can you post a link of the review that compares ax53U and ax55. Not the ax56u vs ax55 please.

  • Thanks, bought one of these to use as a wireless bridge. Hopefully all good

    • Had to flash OpenWRT on so it would pick up my 5GHz network out of the box as ASUS firmware doesn't see DFS channels (sucks!) But now it's working perfectly, from one end of my apartment to the other end through 3 walls.

  • Note this only has Asus AiProtection classic (not the pro version). This means it doesn't have Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Content Filter – Website & App, and an Internet Activity Dashboard.

  • My AX53u arrived. Updated firmware, dropped it as an AiMesh node with Ethernet Backhaul with my RT-AC68U. Went from 10-15mps from my old junk DLink router to 100+ on wifi.
    So far so good!
