This WD model is equivalent to Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN006 (Both are latest model with 256 MB Cache)
I was going to order one each of WD & Seagate for my NAS. But 2 WD turned out to be cheaper from this site.

  • Sorry stupid question, Ironwolf ones has got 7200RPM instead of WD’s 5400, does that make it faster?

    • +2

Seagate ST4000VN006 is 5400 RPM, same as this WD. Higher sized Seagates are 7200 RPM. Check this sheet to see 7200 RPM drives.

And yes, 7200 RPM drives are faster, but they also have more wear-n-tear and noise.

    • +1

Yes, significantly faster, but it is fine if it is going to be used for storage/NAS as speed isn't that much of a priority and the slower drivers can be quieter/less energy/longer lasting.

There are even 10,000 and 15,000 RPM for a boot/gaming drive as the gold standard before we had SSDs back in the day.

      • Ah WD VelociRaptor, was a pretty cool drive back in the day.

    • Worth considering the Ironwolf will likely be much noisier, in part because of the higher RPM.

All my Seagates are far noisier than my WDs.

  • $287 a good price for wd red plus 10tb?

  • I went the 2 X 8TB Western Red. Cheers OP.

    • 8TB at $275 each?
Is that cheap? Would rather a 8tb honestly…

      • 10% off applied at checkout.

    • WD with 256MB cache? I could not find.

      • I just saw the WD Red Plus 8TB for 227.84 but its US import though…

        • ok. Not sure how warranty on US imports work.
