On sale is this more high end TerraMaster NAS and cheaper than it's previously been. It features an Intel Celeron J3455 quad-core CPU, 10GbE LAN, dual 1GbE LAN, 4GB RAM (Upgrade to 12GB) and 2 USB 3.0 ports on the rear.

An excellent choice for file storage, backups, media playback (e.g. Plex), Docker and even your homelab setup if you happen to have a 10GbE network. Please refer to this document to see what it can transcode in Plex.

Recently TerraMaster released TOS 5.0 which is a whole new operating system different to TOS 4.0 with a lot more features, cleaner UI, more apps and overall runs more smoothly. With TOS 5.0 I use the new Surveillance Manager to record my camera footage straight to the NAS and the new CloudSync app for syncing my OneDrive and Google Drive to the NAS as a backup.

Alternatively you can 'unofficially' install Operating Systems like TrueNAS or even Synology DSM to experience all the apps and features that they provide.

    Wow. That is new, jv

    • That's OOS but essentially two extra bays.

  • Do you know if the CloudSync app can sync multiple OneDrive accounts? I have an old Asustor that does this, but will need to upgrade one day.

  • Can I run esxi on this? (not only as datastore, but the host itself)

Weak CPU and a terrible OS. You can put UnRaid on it, and use containers instead of VMs. Not terribly tricky to do, but definitely not something a beginner should jump into. Best to stick to mainstream if that’s the case - it’s not worth jeopardising your data.

  • Would this be good for storing and editing a Lightroom library off? Looking at buying a NAS but don't know much about them.

The F2-210 looks like it could do the job for half the price?

    • The 210 models are ARM based, and don't have the best performance. I have a 4 bay one, and it is fine as a pure NAS target device for copying files, but I don't think it would be up to the task of running other services.

    • Best not to run LR libraries off the network, but if you must, keep the library local, but the photos on the NAS.
